How to Block Calls on iPhone in iOS 8

If you need to block a certain contact from calling you on your iPhone, here’s how to do that in iOS 8.

Sometime you get calls from spammers, or maybe your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend keeps trying to call you and won’t go away. In iOS 8, there’s an easy way to block a number from contacting you, either through a voice call, a text message, or a FaceTime chat on iPhone. Users can create their own blacklist, if you will, and cut ties with those folks that are just plain annoying.

In iOS 8, there are a couple of ways to block someone from contacting you, and we’ll show you the different methods you can use to make sure you never hear from a spammer or an ex again.

How to Block Calls & Other Forms of Contact

There are two ways you can block a number to prevent them from contacting you. The first way is done through the Settings app, and you can choose a contact from your contact list to block specifically. The second method is if it’s an unknown number. At that point, you can block it through the Phone app, which I’ll demonstrate further down.

First, though, here’s how to block a number from a contact that you know.

Open up the Settings app and scroll down until you see Phone, Messages and FaceTime. These are three different sections, but from here on out, the instructions are the same for each section.

Tap on one and then select Blocked. Tap on Add New… and choose a contact from your contact list that you want to block. Repeat this step for Messages and FaceTime.

To unblock someone, simply go back to the Blocked section in Phone, Messages or FaceTime and tap on Edit in the upper-right corner. From there, tap on the small round red icon and then tap Unblock.

How to Block Calls From Unknown Contacts

To block a phone number that you don’t know (most likely a spammer or that annoying ex-boyfriend that got a new number), open up the Phone app and tap on the Recents tab at the bottom. This will give you a list of all your recent incoming and outgoing calls that you’ve made.

Next to each number on the right side is a lowercase “i” with a circle around it. Tap on that next to the number that you want to block and scroll down until you see Block this Caller. Apple will warn you that “you will not receive phone calls, messages, or FaceTime from people on the block list.” If you’re okay with that, tap on Block Contact to finish the job.

Likewise, if you want to unblock the contact, simply go back into that menu page where you would normally block the contact, but instead it will have Unblock this Caller. Tap on it to unblock that contact.

For what it’s worth, the above method will also work with your known contacts as well, so you technically don’t even have to go into the Settings app to add a blocked contact, as you can do it all right from the Phone app. However, either method is available at your disposal, and you can decide which one is faster and easier for you.

When using the lower case “I” in Recents, callers that are “UNKNOWN” do not have the block option available. Maybe you could address this scenario.
