In this quick guide we’ll show you how to turn off the Galaxy Note 9‘s always on display. The neat feature that keeps a small part of your screen on 24/7. Whether it’s a distraction or you want better battery life, you’ll be happy to learn how easy it is to disable. Some love the constant at-a-glance notifications, but you can get rid of them if you don’t.

When you turn off the Note 9 screen, a small area stays lit up. This displays the time, date, battery level and even incoming notifications or message alerts. It’s called an “Always-on Display” but some people don’t like it. If so, turn it off with our quick steps below.

Thankfully Samsung’s phones are highly customizable these days. Flipping through the settings menu you’ll find options for almost everything. You can change or tweak the always-on display, add a GIF to it, or get rid of it completely.
To disable the always on display feature simply head to Settings > Lock Screen & Security > Always On Display > and flip the switch to OFF. Just like we’ve shown you in the video above, or the step-by-step instructions below.
Quickly head to your settings menu and disable the AOD if you want. Now, the screen will turn completely off and show nothing, and you’ll get slightly better battery life.
That said, now you have to tap the power button or fingerprint sensor to wake your phone just to check the time, date, or see a notification. The average person does this over 150 times a day, which slowly lowers battery life.
We think the always on display is better than turning your phone on multiple times a day for quick information. In fact, Samsung claims this feature uses less than 5% battery after an 8-10 hour work day. Meaning it sips on juice and is worth the tradeoff. That said if you’re not worried about the battery and just think it’s distracting, now you know how to get rid of it.
We also suggest adding some customization to the Galaxy Note 9 Always On Display. You can customize it so it dims at night in your room, but stays bright anywhere else. Or, have it turn off at certain times at night, that way it’s not a distraction. You get the best of both worlds.
Head to Settings > Wallpaper & themes > and choose the AOD column at the bottom right of your screen. From here, customize just about every aspect of your screen.
Change the clock font, color, add a background or a GIF. You can even make a GIF from your own 960 FPS video you took with the powerful camera and set that as your AOD image. Additionally, choose from hundreds of pre-made AOD themes to completely change the look and feel of your always on display.
There are even “facewidgets” where you can tap the clock from your always-on display and swipe over for more options, like music controls without turning on your screen. Cool, right?
