How to Downgrade from iOS 12.4.1

Published

on

If you run into iOS 12.4 problems, you want to use the iOS 12.4 jailbreak, or you don’t like the changes or you just want to go back to what you’re used to you can downgrade iOS for a limited time. We expect that Apple will close the downgrade from iOS 12.4.1 to iOS 12.4 later today or this week. If you are trying to downgrade from iOS 13 to iOS 12.4 to jailbreak, you can do that too.

You can downgrade from iOS 12.4.1, but not all the way back to iOS 12 or to iOS 11 at all. You can then restore a backup you made while on iOS 12.4. You cannot restore a backup made on iOS 12.4.1 after you go back.

Officially Apple doesn’t support an iOS 12 downgrade process, but it’s actually very straightforward. Expect to spend about 20 to 30 minutes downgrading, and then longer restoring from a backup if you want to get all of your data back.

Apple closed the iOS 12 to iOS 11 downgrade process already, so you are stuck on iOS 12.

How to Downgrade from the iOS 12.4.1 to iOS 12.4

This is how to downgrade from iOS 12 to iOS 11.4.1.

This is how to downgrade from iOS 12.

This guide will show you how to roll back to iOS 12.4 on your iPhone or iPad. You will not be able to read it on your device while you downgrade, so print it out or pull it up on another device.

If you made an archived backup then you know for sure that you can go back. If you are concerned we suggest also making sure you have a backup of your iPhone or iPad on iOS 12 just to be safe.

Here’s what you need to do to go back to iOS 12.4 from iOS 12.4.1.

  1. Download the iOS 12.4 update for your iPhone from this website.
  2. /Make sure there is still a green checkmark in the Apple Signing Status column. If there is not one, do not proceed.
  3. Turn off Find My iPhone on your iPhone. Go to Settings -> tap on your name at the top of settings -> Tap on iCloud -> Tap on Find My iPhone -> Toggle off. Enter your password.
  4. With your phone backed up and all the steps above completed, plug your iPhone into your computer.
  5. Open iTunes and Click on the iPhone icon.

Click the iPhone icon in iTunes.

Click the iPhone icon in iTunes.

  6. Click on the Restore iPhone button using a special click. On Mac hold alt/option when you click and on PC hold Shift when you click.
  7. In the window that opens, find the iOS 12 file you just downloaded and click on it and then click open.
  8. Choose to erase and restore your iPhone. Click Restore to begin this process
  9. While you wait the iPhone will restart multiple times. When it is finished you will be back on iOS 12.4.

Once the process completes, you can decide if you want to restore from a backup that you made locally or on iTunes. As you set up your iPhone it will ask if you want to set it up as new, or if you want to restore a backup. When that screen appears, choose whichever option you want. Most people will want to restore from a backup.

Great article. My bluetooth audio is broken since the 12.1.1 upgrade on my XR. No matter the bluetooth device (Car, Bose Speaker, AirPods) I am plagued with skipping audio since 12.1.1. I tried to roll back to 12.1 per this article and I was still forced back to 12.1.1 during the setup ?

Hi Jim, I had the same problem. I downloaded the prior software version and was forced into the latest software at the very end of the setup process.

“Make sure there is still a green checkmark in the Apple Signing Status column”

Well that certainly stopped me stone cold dead and I’m only on step 2.

What the heck is the ‘apple signing status column’?

Sorry, but you really do need to take into account that we aren’t all necessarily as savvy as you on these devices when you write articles like this.

This solution did not work for me because when I finished setting up my iPhone from backup it said there was an available update (12.1.4) and it didn’t give me the option to bypass it :( I am having an issue where I am not getting group messages from groups including android users.

This solution DOES NOT WORK (as the previous post says). The phone will NOT allow restoring a backup unless the iOS is the latest version. Don’t cha just love Apple?

iOS 12.3.1 has affected my iPhone 6s very badly. i fully charged it this morning, the went shopping, when i checked my phone the battery was down to 7% but when I got home and connected it to the charger it started at 7% then immediately shot up to 88%. I have the feeling Apple are up to it’s old tricks again. If they carry on like this I will change to Android!

I did the update to 12.4.1 as advised to plug the security issues created by 12.4.0 BUT ever since then have had major issues with batter flas0drianing to empty, and phone suddenly switching on and off, sometimes multiple times, during charging while the phone is still plugged in! It happens almost every day and has been driving me mad! I contacted Apple online chat, who did a diagnostic but claim it needs servicing and I have to take the phone in to be looked it! I never had this issue before, there is or was NO battery issues prior to the update, but I don’t know how to cure the problem. Sometimes it takes an hour of replugging back into power, but can’t hard restart nor can I shut it down properly during this period of stupidity! Then suddenly it come back to life an dshows 100% power! Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
