How to Fix Google Play Apps Won’t Download Error RPC:S-5:AEC-0
Google Play error [RPC:S-5:AEC-0] is an annoying error message Android users see when Google Play apps won’t download.
If Google Play won’t download app updates or even install new apps, this error message is what most users will see. The Google Play error [RPC:S-5:AEC-0] shows up on Android 4.0 and higher and commonly appears after an update to Android 4.2, though that’s not the only reason.
Google offers a way to fix Google Play app download errors, but this multi-step process doesn’t work for many users. Thankfully there is a simple fix, which we share in the video below.
The good news is users don’t need to perform a hard reset to fix Google Play download problems.
How to Fix Google Play Error [RPC:S-5:AEC-0]
The video below will show how to fix Google Play can’t download apps and app updates in under a minute. There’s no need to reset the phone or wade through deep framework settings, just remove and re-add your account.
In order to fix the Google Play error [RPC:S-5:AEC-0] we need to remove the Google account and re-add it. If there are multiple Google accounts, remove them all by repeating the directions below.
To get started, go to Settings. Once in settings look for Accounts. The location varies from device to device, but it is normally near the middle of the main settings page.
Once on accounts, tap on Google Accounts.
In Google Accounts, scroll down and tap Remove. When prompted agree to the pop-up warning that this will remove the account.
Close Settings.
Next tap on Google Play. Agree to the terms and conditions.
When prompted tap on Existing Google Account and sign in to your Google account.
After this is completed, updates should start working immediately. If they don’t, try restarting the phone.
- Once downloads are working, we need to go turn on syncing for the Google account.
- Go to Settings
- Accounts
- Google accounts
- Tap on your account
- Put a checkmark next to any service you use, like Gmail, calendar, contacts etc.
This will turn syncing on and get the phone back to where it was before we removed the account.
This should fix the Google Play error RPC:S-5:AEC-0 on phones running Android 4.0 and higher, but if it does not, users may need to perform a hard reset.

It is not confined to just ICS/JB, It is happening on Gingerbread too! The major factor in this I suspect, is 2-step verification on the Google account!
Your method *will* fail!
Because if its the case of the primary Google account, removing it will necessitate a factory reset, and re-install the Google Apps and having to re-sign in again, and restore the apps. See this Android Enthusiasts StackExchange site here (https://android.stackexchange.com/a/49422/4003)
It was around a month or so ago, when google pushed out a new revamped Play store that it broke.

Removing the Play Store updates doesn’t solve anything, but neither does the fix above (for me). The funny thing is that if you keep trying, you’ll eventually be able to get through to the update page for an app, and then on you’ll be able to update your app just fine, but then you might have a problem on the next one (or you might not). So frustrating.

I have a Nexus 4 and had this error this morning. I only had to re sync my account and the play store works fine again. I didn’t even have to remove my Google account.

Thanks, I had the same issue when upgrading cyanogen mod to android 4.3 on my nexus 4. Everything was buggy in the store…
That’s really so bad that I can’t use my two google accounts on my phone, especially for emails and calendar…
So yeah, just removed my Google account and added the main one back.

After deleting updates and trying a soft reset many times this actually worked for me. Thank you! Ironically the only apps I couldn’t update were all google related apps.

I just wanted to add that I have the Ellipsis 7 from Verizon, and due to the limited amount of space that the device is shipped with, and the inability to move applications and games to the SD Card, and for personal reasons, I did a complete factory reset. After setting up the device, I added my existing Google account to the device, no issues or problems noticed, but after Google Play notified me that updates are available, the following happened:
1. Google Play would notify that updates were available.
2. Google Play would NOT allow downloads of any kind.
3. After flushing Google Play cache, same as #1 and #2.
4. Rebooting the device did nothing what so ever.
I was going to perform a factory restore again, but all I did was remove my Gmail account, then add my Gmail account again, and everything is working perfectly fine ,and as expected. I believe it’s running Android 4.2.2 as well, if that says anything.

Didn’t work for me. There was no seeing to remove Google from my Samsung galaxy s 4. I simply went into the applications and cleared the cache and data from Google play. That worked!!!

RESOLVED: After suffering myself with Play Store issues for 2 months I have come to the conclusion that there is no issue with the phone or play store and the issue is with Push Notifications. When PN is not working the Play Store will hang halfway downloading or updating apps. Even outgoing messages will not be through. Simply confirm that the PN is working by downloading PNF, Push Notification Status & Push Notification Tester. Never turn off Hangouts and google messenger although you may not be using it. Whenever Push Notification is Ok Play Store ok. Facebook, Whatsapp & Viber have their own system for PN but all other apps use Google Cloud Messaging (GCM).
