How to Fix Stuck Surface Pro 4 Start Ups & Lock Ups

Published

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 all-in-one should be one of the best devices you can get with Windows 10 on it. Issues like lock ups and the Surface Pro 4 getting stuck during start up hurt that perception. That’s a pretty serious problem considering what the Surface family represents for Microsoft.

It and other devices in the Surface family were created to showcase the best of Microsoft’s software. They were built with Windows in mind. More specifically, the Surface Pro 4 was built for Windows 10. Special cameras let Surface Pro 4 users log in without entering their password. The Surface Pro 4 lets users switch in and out of Windows 10’s Tablet Mode experience automatically, if that’s what they prefer. Gotta Be Mobile recently called the Surface Pro 4 the best Windows 2-in-1 there is in its Surface Pro 4 review.

Both the device and Windows 10 are the first hard tests that Microsoft’s new strategies for delivering software have come up against. Faced with a rough future for Windows if it didn’t innovate, Microsoft switched to regular updates for Windows 10. Instead of introducing large upgrades every year, the company plans to update Windows throughout the year with fixes and features.

Some speculate that the change in release put the team creating Windows 10 behind schedule. Certainly, Windows 10 seemed to be a rough launch for Microsoft. There were definitely some issues. When the Surface Pro 4 launched two months later everyone assumed that these issues would be fixed. Even today, some of them definitely aren’t. The most annoying of them, graphics driver issues, were addressed in a recent firmware update. Issues with the Surface Pro 4 locking up and getting stuck during start up remain.

How to Fix Stuck Surface Pro 4 Start Ups & Lock Ups – The Good News

Let’s start with the good news. Just because your Surface Pro 4 fails start doesn’t mean you need to replace it. What your device is experiencing isn’t a hardware failure. These issues are directly related to the drivers and firmware that Microsoft has it running. The company regularly releases firmware and software updates through its Windows Update utility. One day soon, Microsoft will have a fix for sleeping related issues, the company says.

Windows 10 automatically installs software and firmware updates in the background when it’s connected to a reliable internet connection. You can manually check for software and firmware updates on your Surface Pro 4 in the Settings app. Just look in the Updates & Recovery area.

In addition to providing information about firmware updates through Windows Update, Microsoft adds information concerning major new updates on its Surface Support website. You can check there to see if you have a firmware update that you need to download, but remember your Surface Pro 4 automatically checks on its own. It’s very unlikely that you’ll find anything that your device missed.

How to Fix Stuck Surface Pro 4 Start Ups & Lock Ups – The Bad News

There is bad news though. Whatever firmware update that Microsoft has planned to address these Surface Pro 4 problems hasn’t yet arrived. What’s worse, preventing the issues is more difficult than one might assume.

If you’ve opened your Surface Pro 4’s Type Cover only to find that it won’t start up, the only thing you can do is perform what’s called a hard reset. Essentially, you’re cutting power to your Surface Pro 4, forcing it to go through the start up process again. You will lose everything that you were working on before putting the device to sleep. Note that most apps downloaded from the Windows Store save as you go along. For example, Word Mobile saves without you having to push a button. Many traditional programs have built-in recovery tools. Word in Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 2016 will show you the document you were working on before you had to perform the hard reset. Programs and files will still be there.

Press and hold the Power button on your Surface Pro 4 for about 20 seconds. Now press the power button again to turn your Surface Pro 4 back on. Within a few moments you should see the familiar Surface logo.

Surface Pro 4 owners everywhere agree that powering down the device completely from the Start Menu prevents the issue. That’s because powering down skipping Sleep entirely. You can do that by tapping or clicking on the Start Button in the bottom left corner of your device’s screen. In Tablet Mode you’ll need to press the Menu button at the top of the Start Screen to get access to the Power button. Outside of Tablet Mode, the button is in the Start Menu in the bottom-left corner.

Some have seen limited success with unplugging their Surface Pro 4’s Type Cover. This is also a great fix for when the Surface Pro 4 refuses to start up and gets stuck displaying the Surface logo for longer than it should.

Good luck with your Surface Pro 4. It’s our hope that Microsoft has these issued fixed soon.

This is the very last microsoft product i will ever buy.. i can only thank my luck stars i have refused to let any of my win7 machines update.. Microsoft HAS to be the most inept software company there is. Everything they release is barely ready be called an alpha version.. but they insist on screwing their customers and as of now i will only use a microshaft product if its pirated

My Surface Pro 4 did not start when I brought it in from the car after a 20 minute ride in -10Celsius temperatures (I’m in Montreal, Quebec.) I’ve only had it a week and need it for my practice! Panic time? After an hour long session with a client, I tried it again and Eureka! it started normally. Moral of the story? It won’t start if it gets cold. Let it warm up and don’t panic.

Yes, I too, am sorry that I bought one.
Have had issues where it won’t open, trying all combinations, then it works and then it doesn’t.

Microsoft is getting worse, not better.

Because of all the likeabilities you mentioned was why I bought one…and on credit for that matter! I have been regretting this purchase ever since. I can go on for some days where it appears to be working greatly, and then it’s like it remenbers it’s a Microsoft product and not Apple. For the past 2 days I’ve been unable to work on it…it is on, but not on. After every hatd reset,it blinks to start and then goes dark, nothing happens. I can never buy another surface laptop/tablet

Mine freezes constantly, but usually when an email arrives in my Outlook Inbox. Have to do hard re-start – at least twice a week. Have repaired Outlook, but still same issue.

Anyone else have a solution to this piece of crap, other than making it a paper-wieght or testing as new Frizbee ?
