How to Get Google Wallet On Verizon Galaxy Nexus Sans Root

Published

on

Previously, we had reported that Google Wallet’s NFC-based digital wallet would work on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus with root, but now developers over at XDA-Developers have been successful in porting the app to Verizon’s Google-phone without requiring root. The app could be installed as an APK–you’ll need to allow for non-Android Market apps to be installed via your phone’s setting.

Currently, the app is limited to devices operating in the U.S. It is reported as being region-locked so users who attempt to use Google Wallet and NFC payment services outside the U.S. may not be allowed to pay for goods using their Galaxy Nexus LTE phone.

It has been speculated before that the absence of Google Wallet on Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus is because Verizon is establishing its own competing mobile wallet payment service through the ISIS partnership formed with rivals AT&T and T-Mobile.

Users who install the hacked version of Google Wallet on their NFC-capable Verizon Galaxy Nexus LTE will be credited with $10 once they sign up for a Google pre-paid debit card. The $10 will automatically be deposited into a user’s account and users can consume that money when paying for physical merchandise at participating retailers.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners interested in running Google Wallet can click on to download the app. I have completed the process and can confirm that the download, installation, and setup works as described, but have not attempted to make payment using my phone so I cannot confirm that it works in that regard.

I can’t wait for retail stores and cell
phone carriers to catch up to mobile payments. There is an app I’ve been using
right now that allows me to make mobile payments on the go, CSI globalVCard. I
create a single use MasterCard every time I make a purchase, it makes me feel a
    lot safer about mobile payments.
