How to Get the Nexus 4 Android 4.2.2 Update Right Now

Published

on

Two days ago, Google rolled out the Android 4.2.2 update for the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Nexus. Yesterday, Google rolled out the Android 4.2.2 update for two more devices including another version of the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4. Nexus 4 owners that don’t wish to wait for the Android 4.2.2 Over-the-Air update to roll out fortunately can get the update right now if they choose.

A couple of days ago, the long-awaited Android 4.2.2 update started rolling out to owners of Nexus devices, which are currently the only devices that are running Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. Nexus 10, Nexus 7 and GSM Galaxy Nexus owners started seeing the update arrive OTA though as we’ve said, owners are able to install the update the early if they choose to.

The Nexus 4 Android 4.2.2 update is rolling out right now.

The Android 4.2.2 is a small but important update as it not only bring some bug fixes but some new features as well including a new way to toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Quick Settings. It also, evidently, kills potential LTE support for the Nexus 4 so owners will want to be weary.

Yesterday the same updated was sent out to owners of Google’s popular Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 4, which launched with Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software back in November.

Like owners of the other Nexus devices, Nexus 4 owners will be seeing the update gradually roll out over the next few days. Those not wanting to wait for the OTA arrive however do have the option to get the update right now however.

The first option that Nexus 4 owners can take, and this is recommended to those that aren’t familiar with sideloading or flashing software, is to use Google Framework Services to prompt the update. This method is extremely hit or miss and from the looks of things, has been extremely miss with this update. Still, it’s worth a shot for those looking to update to Android 4.2.2 early.

1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All

2. Find Google Services Framework.

3. Tap on Force Stop.

4. Select Clear Data.

5. Head back to the Nexus 4’s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.

If this method doesn’t work, and again it may not, there is a sure fire way of getting the update up and running but it’s going to take a little bit of work and some knowledge about sideloading or flashing.

Those looking to install the update manually will be able to do it in one of two ways. Before diving in, this is not recommended for average users. Users who aren’t comfortable with the terminology or instructions should wait for the OTA.

Nexus 4 owners not wanting to wait for the OTA can install the update now.

First thing’s first. Nexus 4 owners will want to make sure they’re running the JOP40D build. Once that is squared away, those running custom recovery on their Nexus 4 will want to download Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean directly from Google.

Once that is finished, owners should reboot the device into recovery and flash the zip file that was just downloaded. After a bit of an installation process, the update should be up and running in no time.

As we’ve said, those running stock recovery have a little more work to do to get the update up and running.

First, download the zip file from Google’s servers. Next, reboot the device into recovery and choose the “Apply update from adb” option. This can be found by pressing Volume Up and the Power Button when in recovery. Once done, Nexus 4 owners will want to plug their device into their PC using a USB cable.

Using a command prompt on the PC, type in adb sideload [Insert Full Zip File Name Here] and the software should start loading up. Once it hits 100%, reboot the Nexus 4 and it should be running Android 4.2.2 in all its glory.

Again, if none of that makes any sense, we advise not to use this method and wait for the OTA update which should roll out within the next few days. For those that are going to take the plunge, enjoy Android 4.2.2.

the google services framework clearing does nothing differently to simply checking for an update prior to that. its a myth that it pulls the update in any faster.

you would think a dedicated mobile phone site would know this.

I checked for the update several times before clearing the Google Services Framework. After clearing the Framework the update immediately became available.

Sorry George, I guess you’re the one who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

It most certainly does. I clicked “Check Update” on my N7. Says System is up to date. Went to clear data on the framework and then went back to check update again (all does within less then a minute) and now says update available. Just so you know…

NOTE – the only time the above would work is if the update would be there after a simple check only…its those occasions where people have (wrongly) assumed that clearing that has done it. it depends on when google PUSH them rather than anything you can do on the phone to PULL them.

Then apparently Google PUSHED the update to my phone in the 30 seconds interval that took me to do the Framework procedure.
Anyway, I’m just happy it is updating right now =D

Finally worked for me this morning on both the Nexus 4 and 7. You can call it a myth, but it just worked for me.
