How to Get the Nexus 7 Android 4.2.2 Update Right Now
Early this morning, Google started pushing the long-awaited Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update to owners of the GSM Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 10 and the Nexus 7 tablet. The updates are rolling out Over-the-Air (OTA) but for those Nexus 7 owners that wish to get the update right now, that option is available to those that wish to take the plunge.

Since the release of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean back in November, Nexus owners and in particular, Nexus 7 owners, have been dealing with an assortment of issues ranging from poor battery life to a slow charging issue. Those experiencing these issues have been longing for an update to fix them and after Android 4.2.1 rolled out and fix the December bug and the December bug only, Nexus 7 owners have had their attention on a Android 4.2.2 update.
That update started rolling out to owners earlier today and like every Nexus update from Google, the update is rolling out slowly as many owners are still reporting that they haven’t seen their software upgrade.
Those looking to not wait for the software have a couple of options. The first is a simple little trick that often works with these types of updates though we’ve heard that some owners have been out of luck this time around. The second is to download the software straight from Google and manually install the update.
The easier option is route number one. This method isn’t going to work for every Nexus 7 owner. Some owners use different variants of these steps to force the update so Nexus 7 users should try different combinations of these steps.
1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All
2. Find Google Services Framework.
3. Tap on Force Stop.
4. Select Clear Data.
5. Head back to the Nexus 7’s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.
If that works, and it might, the update will prompt to download and install and after that’s said and done, Android 4.2.2 will be up and running on the Nexus 7.

For those that don’t wish to toy around, there is another method to getting the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi only (nakasi) update up and running with Android 4.2.2, though, it’ll take a bit of work. (This won’t work for the 3G version of the Nexus 7 so don’t try it.)
We don’t recommend this route for novice users but those that are more familiar with side loading or flashing software will probably have an easy go with this.
First, Nexus 7 owners will want to make sure the device is currently running build JOP40D. Those that don’t have that build on board will want to stay away from this method. Second, Nexus 7 owners will want to download the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi Only Android 4.2.2 update from Google.
After downloading this file, Nexus 7 owners running stock software will want to boot the device into recovery, attach the device to a USB cable plugged into a PC, and choose the “Apply update from adb” option. From there, type in ‘adb sideload [Insert Full File Name Here]’ and it should work its magic.
Again, if this seems unfamiliar or tricky, we recommend avoiding it.
Those who wish to install through custom recovery can do so simply by downloading that file to the internal storage, rebooting into custom recovery, choosing “Install zip from SD card” and then selecting the update file that was downloaded to the storage space. It will flash and Android 4.2.2 will then be on board.
For those that aren’t interested in any of these methods, the OTA update should be arriving over the course of the next few days though Google remains mum about how long the update process will take for the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus.

Update – the first method did finally work after about ten tries, and only after I just cleared the data rather than force stopping and then clearing.

The first method worked for me on the third try when I did the Clear Data before the Force Stop. Can’t be sure if that’s what made the difference.

After 3 tries I got the update. However, like gnolnod said, it worked just by choosing “Clear Data”, and I didn’t even pressed “Force Stop”.
