How to Record 4K Video on iPhone 6

Published

on

The iPhone 6 can record video at 1080p, but with a new app, you can record 4K video right on your iPhone 6. Here’s how to do it.

It turns out that while the software of iOS doesn’t have the capability to record 4K video right out of the box, the iPhone 6 hardware can still record video in the higher resolution.

A relatively newer app called Ultrakam allows users to record 4K video on their iPhone 6, as well as giving more advanced users a handful of useful features.

4K has been the the talk of the town these past couple of years, promising higher-resolution videos and higher-resolution displays to go along with that. However, seeing as how the technology is still in its early stages, it’s still not as popular as it could be, but if you’re set on recording 4K video on your iPhone 6, here’s how to do it.

The first thing you’ll need to do is download the Ultrakam app from the iTunes App Store. It’s a bit expensive at $9.99, but if you’re dead set on a 4K recording option for iPhone, it’s pretty much the best app to go to.

From there, you can open up the app and get to recording 4K videos right away, although you might want to get familiar with all of the settings first, and there are quite a few settings that you can change and adjust.

For instance, you can change the frame rate to either 20, 24, 25 or 30 frames per second. You can also disable/enable audio, choose between M-JPEG or H.264 codec, change the aspect ratio, and change the quality of the video that you record.

Obviously, the higher quality that you use, the higher the file size. You can choose between 25% quality and 100% quality, which ranges from 3 MB/s video to 50 MB/s video as the highest quality.

The sample video below was recorded at 3264×2448 with a quality of around 13 MB/s at 30 frames per second, which is 50% quality. It’s a 30-second clip that weighs in at almost 500MB, which is a lot, so be prepared to have a lot of free space on your iPhone if you plan to record a lot of 4K video.

Now, in order to transfer that 4K video to your computer, you can’t use the traditional ways of iTunes syncing, and you can’t view the video in your Photos or Video app on the iPhone, since the apps don’t support anything greater than 1080p.

Instead, you’ll have to use an app on your computer called iExplorer, which allows you to transfer all sorts of files to and from your iOS device.

After downloading and installing iExplorer, plug in your iPhone to your computer and fire up iExplorer. It should automatically detect your iPhone.

Click on Photos & Videos, which will take you to a list of your iPhone’s file system, similar to that on your computer, so you should be fairly familiar with how it works. Double click on Apps and you’ll be greeted with a list of apps that you have installed on your iPhone. Next, scroll down and find Ultrakam6+. Click on the arrow just to the right of it and you’ll see a folder called Documents.

From here, drag and drop your video file onto your desktop or a specific folder. Give iExplorer some time to transfer the video if it’s a large file. After it’s done.
