How to Set a Sleep Timer for Music on iPhone

Published

on

If you like listening to music as you fall asleep, here’s how to set a sleep timer on your iPhone so that you don’t have to manually turn it off.

In iOS, there’s no native feature in the Music app for the music to automatically stop playing after a certain amount of time. Luckily, though, there’s a neat trick that you can use inside of the Clock app.

Music can be a calming stimuli that can help you relax and get to sleep faster. Many people listen to music as they fall asleep, as it not only drowns out any outside noise (similar to how white noise works), but it can also help relax users and make them sleepy. And once you have a pair of sleeping headphones, you’re off to the races.

I have a go-to playlist that I have set up that includes a lot of different slower songs that feature acoustic or light piano music, and I’m sure you have your own playlist that works for you as well.

However, if you want that playlist to automatically stop playing the music at a specific point in time, here’s how to set up a sleep timer on your iPhone that can automatically shut off your music after you have fallen asleep.

Setting a Sleep Timer for Music

If you want to get a better night’s sleep without having to manually shut off your music once you’re done listening to it, here’s how to set up a sleep timer for your music on iPhone in iOS.

First off, be aware that this trick works in other apps other than Apple’s stock apps like Music and Podcasts. So if you use Spotify or another music app besides the stock one, you can still take advantage of this feature.

Now, to set up a sleep timer, follow these simple steps:

  • Open up the Clock app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on Timer down at the bottom.
  • Set a specific time limit when you want to shut the music off. For example, setting it at 30 minutes will shut off the music after 30 minutes have passed.

  • Next, tap on When Timer Ends.
  • Scroll all the way down and select Stop Playing.

This will make it so that pretty much anything playing out of your iPhone’s speakers or headphone jack is stopped and shut off. It obviously works with Apple’s range of stock apps, including Music and Podcasts, but I’ve also tested it with Spotify and it works great.

Tried this with a Sirius XM app on an iPhone 6 plus and the timer did not shut the app off. Any suggestions?
