How to Sleep and Disable Apps on the Galaxy S8

This guide will explain how to sleep and disable apps on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, and go over the benefits of disabling them. Both phones come with a series of Samsung, carrier and even Amazon apps pre-installed, which often waste space and are rarely used.

There are multiple reasons you may want to do this. By disabling an app, it will no longer be visible on the phone or app tray, which is a quick way to clean up your phone. Additionally, you may want to uninstall an app to save space or sleep certain apps while at work to prevent interruptions.

Samsung actually provides three different methods for managing apps on the Galaxy S8. We can uninstall some, disable anything that was pre-installed, and sleep apps to prevent them from using up battery life in the background.

The reason most users choose to disable apps is to remove bloatware. What is bloatware? It is the dozens of Amazon, Samsung, Verizon, T-Mobile, NASCAR and Lookout Mobile security apps that are pre-installed on your phone.

How to Disable Apps on the Galaxy S8

There are actually two different ways to disable apps on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The first one is to go to the applications tab in settings and manually disable each and every app you want to get rid of. Here are the step-by-step instructions.

  • Head to Settings from the app on your home screen, app tray, or by pulling down the notification bar and tapping the gear-shaped settings button
  • Scroll down and select Apps
  • Select All Apps from the dropdown menu at the top left
  • Find any app you’d like removed and Select it
  • Hit Disable, and tap Confirm to hide that app
  • Repeat the steps to remove any app you’d like

Once you disable an app it will no longer be visible anywhere on the phone. We recommend using caution and only disabling apps that you know won’t cause problems by being removed. I disabled everything from Amazon, AT&T, AT&T Data Usage Manager, Lookout Mobile Security, PDF Write and a few others. It was a total of 13 apps on my Galaxy S8.

The second method is even faster although you won’t see them all in a list format like our instructions above. Simply press and hold down any icon on the home screen or application tray. From here a little pop-up with options and controls will appear. You can select more than one app at a time, remove shortcuts from the home screen, or sleep and disable that specific app. This is the best route if you only need to quickly disable an app or two.

Long press the app icon, tap disable, and hit confirm or OK. It will disappear from the app tray and be disabled forever. You can head to Settings > Apps > and find that app and re-enable it at any time if you’d like to restore it.

How to Sleep Apps on the Galaxy S8

Another option for Galaxy S8 owners is to sleep apps. Putting an app to sleep will prevent it from using battery life in the background. This is helpful if an app is malfunctioning, or if you know an app is using more battery than it should. A good example of this is Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Keep in mind that sleeping apps may not receive updates or be able to send you notifications for incoming messages until you wake it back up.

Press and hold down any app icon on the home screen or in the application tray as mentioned earlier. If the app can be put to sleep you’ll see “Sleep” listed in the popup of options. Let go of the screen and select sleep, read the warning that states you’ll miss notifications, and hit OK to put it to sleep.

Now that app will be temporarily shut down and will not use battery life. When you’re ready, tap the app icon again to wake it up. The application will wake up and resume back to full functionality.

In some instances putting an app to sleep is all that’s needed. However, in other situations, it may benefit users to follow our instructions above and completely disable apps and bloatware. While you’re here, take a look at these awesome Galaxy S8+ cases.

20 Best Galaxy S8+ Cases

Samsung Alcantara Case ($20)

Samsung Alcantara Case ($20)

A neat case from Samsung for the Galaxy S8 is the Alcantara case. It's a beautiful and durable hard case that's covered in Suede-like material. It looks good, feels incredibly soft and is "stain-resistant" too. This is our first recommendation of many. Your phone will be safe, and look good doing it. Since it's a fabric the first few days it may shed, but that quickly went away on ours.

Samsung makes some of the best cases, of course, and this will be no exception. It comes in four different colors and looks pretty unique. Get one for your Galaxy S8+. For whatever reason, most of Samsung's best cases aren't available on their own online shop. If you want one, check out MobileFun.com for all your needs.

I use sleep and also added most of my apps to the “Always Sleeping apps” list. However, I still get notifications from these apps which I know is draining my battery. Why won’t they always sleep like they are supposed to?
