How to Transfer Pictures, Music and More to the New HTC One M8

Published

on

The new HTC One M8 launched this month and some buyers will upgrade from their older HTC One M7, the original HTC One device, to enjoy the larger screen, improved dual focus camera and improved metal design. HTC makes it easy to move their data from their old phone to the new one using their free HTC Transfer Tool app. Owners can also use the HTC Sync Manager, which they can install after they plug their phone into a Mac or Windows computer, but the Transfer Tool makes it easier.

The HTC Transfer Tool, available free in the Google Play Store, will help users move their content from an old HTC One M7 or another Android phone, like a Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S4 or any other phone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

Check to see if the old phone qualifies by opening the Settings app. Find the About section, usually at the bottom of the Settings screen. On the HTC One M7, the user can open Settings by sliding down from the top edge of the screen. Tap the icon in the upper right. It looks like a 3×3 grid of squares. Tap About at the bottom of the next screen. Scroll down to see it. Tap Software information to find the Android version number, which should read 2.3 or higher to use the tool.

Copying Data via HTC Transfer Tool

Install the HTC Transfer Tool on the old Android phone. On the new HTC One M8 open Settings using the method above, which also works on the new HTC One M8. Slide the Settings screen down to the Get content from another phone menu item and tap it.

Find the “Get content from another phone” in Settings.

The settings tool includes four options as follows:

  • HTC Android Phone – use this for the old HTC One M7 or another HTC Android phone
  • Other Android Phone – use this for a Samsung Galaxy phone or some other Android phone
  • iPhone – use this for an Apple iPhone 5s or older or even an iPad
  • All other phones – use this for a Windows phone or Blackberry using a Bluetooth connection

The “Get content from another phone” shows four transfer options on the HTC One M8.

Tap on HTC Android phone and choose between the two options on the next screen. The Quick transfer option only transfers contacts and requires connecting via Bluetooth. Skip down this article to read how to do that. Instead select the Full transfer option.

The next screen explains what the tool will transfer. Tap Next at the bottom of the screen and see the instructions for how to set up the other phone.

The instructions will tell the user to find and install the HTC Transfer Tool from the Google Play Store. Then open the app on the old phone and make sure that it shows the same 4-digit PIN code that the new phone shows. It will wait for the other phone to make itself ready. Once the phones connect using the app, tap Next and select all the content in the list that should transfer to the new phone. Here’s the list of what it can transfer:

  • Bookmarks
  • Calendar
  • Messages (text and email)
  • Contacts
  • Music
  • Photos/Videos
  • Settings

Tap Start and wait for the tool to finish. Some items will take longer to transfer than others, so wait patiently for it to finish. The new phone’s screen will show the progress as each transfers.

How to Transfer Only Contacts Using a Bluetooth Connection

First, connect the two phones over Bluetooth. Open the Settings app and choose Bluetooth on both phones. Make sure they’re both set to ON using the slider button at the top of the screen. On the new HTC tap on Scan for devices and it will discover the old phone. A box will pop up on both phones with a code. Make sure the code matches on both phones and choose Pair on each phone.

On the new phone, choose the back button below the screen on the left. It looks like a rounded arrow pointing left and rests just below the display. Scroll down and tap on Get content from another phone. Choose HTC Android phone and then choose Quick transfer.

A window will pop up that tells the user to turn the old phone on and then select it from the list in that window. It should already show the old phone if the user connected the two phones via Bluetooth as suggested above. Make sure the dot next to the phone shows green and tap OK. The phone will find the contacts on the old phone and transfer them to the new phone’s internal contact list in the Phone or Contacts apps. It takes anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on how many contacts the old phone holds.

When complete the display shows how many contacts the process transferred. Tap on Done to finish.

remove duplicate contacts from htc one m8

The process will offer to remove duplicate contacts after transferring to the HTC One M8.

If the new HTC One M8 already holds some contacts, the process may create duplicates. This happens when people already added their Google, Facebook or other accounts that include syncing contacts like an exchange email account before doing the transfer.

The transfer process will offer to remove duplicates, which the user should probably do. The phone will scan for duplicates and let the user see the duplicates by tapping REVIEW LIST or just delete them by tapping DELETE NOW. The phone will delete the duplicates.

Uh…most other owners of the M7 including myself have Android version 4.4.2 and have the same setting features as the M8 to transfer data from another phone…..in other words, we don’t need to download the tool from Google play! Thought you might wanna know that so you can edit (correct) your post.
