Published

on

This guide will explain how to easily SIM unlock the LG G6.  Which is necessary to use it on another carrier with a lower monthly bill, international use and more. Many often unlock devices before they sell them, too. There are many advantages to unlocking the LG G6, and here we’ll show you how.

Not only is it easier to sell an unlocked phone, but it’s also great for taking it to another carrier or network. Perfect for owners, or those buying second hand.

Carriers limit devices to their network only in an effort to keep customers on board. Especially in the United States. Thankfully SIM unlocking the LG G6 is extremely easy, and only takes a few minutes. Those in Europe or Asia can easily unlock any phone without the steps below. For everyone else, read on for more details and what you need to know.

Now that all carriers in the US are offering the LG G6, that’s likely where most buyers picked one up. Even from retail stores like Best Buy, they are tied to a carrier. As a result you now have a SIM-locked phone. Meaning you can’t put a T-Mobile SIM card in your AT&T LG G6 and use it. The phone only works on AT&T until you personally unlock it using one of the many steps below.

Once unlocked, phones can be used on almost any carrier, smaller regional carriers, or in other parts of the world. A small exception is Verizon or Sprint use a different network technology, but most phones in 2017 should have support for all carriers. Check first with the manufacturer if you are unsure.

Getting an LG G6 unlock code from your carrier is easy as long as the phone has been paid off or bought outright. This is called a SIM unlock code. If not 3rd party sites like Unlockunit.com will do it. All said and done the process it relatively simple, and can be done in a matter of minutes right at home.

How to Unlock the LG G6

First things first we’ll explain the instructions in full. For anyone to glance at or those who already have an unlock code. Just follow the simple steps below and you’ll be done in less than a minute. For everyone else needing more details, continue reading.

Instructions

  • Dial #06# from your phone and find the IMEI number
  • Use the IMEI to request a SIM unlock code from your carrier, or on a 3rd party website
  • Turn off the LG G6 (or any device for that matter)
  • Remove SIM card tray and insert a SIM card from a different carrier (put a T-Mobile SIM into an AT&T device, etc)
  • Reboot your phone
  • When prompted, enter the provided SIM unlock code in the pop-up box and click Unlock

  • If the code worked the phone will say Network unlock successful
  • We’re all done, continue using your phone on any carrier

Easy right? Anyone can do this. That said, a big part of the instructions is actually obtaining an unlock code to start. We have that covered too.

SIM Unlock the LG G6 for Free

Now we’ll discuss how to get a SIM unlock code for free. Well, one way is free and the other could cost around $20-25 depending on where you buy it. The first step is getting a free code from carriers, and the second is unlock websites online.

As a reminder, Verizon Wireless no longer locks smartphones to their network. A Verizon LG G6 will work on all carriers as long as you have a SIM card and an active line. It doesn’t require any unlocking. Although, it may require users to manually add carrier APN settings to fully function.

Those with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or other carriers will need to request a code, or buy one.

AT&T SIM Unlock Code

All carriers will usually require the LG G6 (or any phone) to be paid in full or bought outright before they give out a code. Owners can’t have any early termination fees, installment agreement payments or anything else outstanding. The device can’t be tied to any other accounts, or reported lost or stolen.

If you meet all those requirements, follow these instructions.

  • Dial #06# from your phone and find the IMEI number
  • Head to AT&T’s device unlock website portal
  • Fill out form with your number, name, IMEI and other steps
  • Once complete hit next and request a SIM unlock code
  • Remove the SIM card and replace it with a SIM from a different carrier
  • Reboot phone and enter the code and hit Unlock per the instructions above

T-Mobile Phone Unlock App

T-Mobile is the only carrier that has an application where you can do this in minutes right from the couch. An easy application is all you fill out, and then receive the code. Rather than follow our steps, just use the T-Mobile Unlock app that is installed on all of their devices.

Again the phone must be paid off in full, active for over 40 days on T-Mobile, and not reported lost or stolen. Account balance must be $0 in order to unlock a device.

Instructions

  • Find and open the T-Mobile Device Unlock App in the application tray
  • If all requirements are met hit Continue, then select Permanent Unlock
  • The phone will unlock itself and reboot

Overall this T-Mobile route is probably the easiest method. Perfect for every day customers that aren’t tech-savvy. Additionally, T-Mobile owns MetroPCS and they use almost the same process. As a reminder, those on a monthly installment agreement need to pay off the LG G6 first before T-Mobile will supply an unlock code.

Sprint SIM Unlock Code

Any carrier that isn’t Verizon or T-Mobile will be about the same. Where you’ll need to request a code and then follow our instructions. However, Sprint has two different codes making things a little frustrating. Sprint will give owners an international unlock, or a domestic (US) unlock. It’s one or the other, not both. Perfect for those traveling out of the country, but worthless if you want to sell the phone or use it on another network.

Instructions

Again, your Sprint LG G6 just be unlock eligible. It needs to be active on the network for more than 50 days, account is in good standing, device is paid in full, and device hasn’t been reported as stolen or used for fraudulent activities.

  • Dial #06# from your phone and find the IMEI number
  • Call Sprint customer service by dialing 1-866-866-7509
  • Request a an LG G6 unlock code
  • Select either domestic or international SIM unlocking. If you request international, the phone will not work on other US carriers. It’s one or the other.
  • If all requirements are met, a code will be sent within 1-48 hours

Once you get the code from Sprint, simply follow the same instructions at the top of the page. Enter a non-Sprint SIM, reboot, enter the code and hit unlock. Then your G6 is ready for use.

Pay to Unlock the LG G6

Finally, if the options above aren’t available you can easily and quickly buy an unlock code. This is what most owners do. If the phone was a gift, bought used online, or doesn’t meet carrier requirements it can still be unlocked. The entire process is exactly the same, we just acquire the unlock code from a website online.

My favorite websites are are Unlockunit, Androidsimunlock, or even Unlockriver. Follow their steps to get a code as described below.

Instructions

  • Dial #06# from your phone and find the IMEI number (write it down)
  • Use the IMEI to request a SIM unlock code from a 3rd party website as mentioned above
  • Turn off the LG G6
  • Remove SIM card tray and insert a SIM card from a different carrier (put a T-Mobile SIM into an AT&T device, etc)
  • Reboot your phone
  • When prompted, enter the provided SIM unlock code in the pop-up box and click Unlock
  • You’re all done, enjoy your Galaxy S7 on any carrier you’d like.

Make sure to pay special attention to any additional instructions provided by these websites. As some send two different types of codes, and recommend trying one before the other. For an example, UnlockUnit.com sends both a regular unlock code, and a “freeze” code. The second one will freeze restrictions, and they suggest trying the first code. If it fails, then use the freeze option. For any reason if the codes do not work, contact the site for another set. Otherwise, they will issue a full refund. Personally every code I’ve ever bought worked just fine. So get one and get the G6 unlocked in minutes. That’s it. Now enjoy using your phone on any carrier you’d like.

I won an LG G6 from Verizon Wireless and it won’t work with my T-Monile sim, says it needs a Verizon Sim to work. So apparently Verizon’s is locked to their network.
