HP Slate Specs and Price Leaked?

Published

on

Thoughts from the Sidelines is running info on a supposed leak of specs and price for the HP Slate. Some of this may or may not be new information and some of it we already know. The link to the source is coming up as a dead link for me, so we’ll see if we can track this down. Here’s the round up of what the leak contains:

  • Price will be around 400 Euro which at current rates translates to US $546. Keep in mind the promise is that this will be cheaper than the iPad.
  • Intel Atom Processor (not sure which one)
  • Win 7
  • Flash Support (if Win 7 then that’s a given.)
  • USB
  • Card reader (not sure what kind)
  • Webcam
  • There’s still no word on official launch date, but signs are pointing to summer/fall 2010.

I’ve heard something similar, but the release date that I’ve heard most recently is October! IF that’s true, and I hope it isn’t, I think that HP is making a big mistake. I think that their sales may suffer significantly if they give Apple several months of sales lead. For a “market-ready product” …is that what they called it?…this seems disappointingly late…

I sure hope HP doesn’t give Apple a 6 month’s lead – that’s almost one development cycle in today’s market. If, however, the Slate offers multi-touch AND inking, it could sweep the field even against the reality distortion field. Then it could be both a media device and the “yellow pad” replacement that would invade the enterprise. Just think what this device could do as an adjunct to your desktop or laptop. Even with the great inking experience on my HP 2730p, it is a royal pain to undock it for a meeting, or even trying to take notes at your desk whild connected to that dock and a monitor. Given WiFi synching, I would throw away all my notepads with a Slate at hand.

Two sides to the release date issue. I agree giving Apple a big time lead isn’t necessarily a healthy option. That said, no guarantees that Apple is going to succeed with the iPad and even if sales numbers are huge it creates the market. HP Slate looks to capitalize on iPad’s shortcomings and that creates marketing opportunities. The question is will HP have the guts to go for the throat.

I have ordered my iPad and I admit to have early adoption fever. At work use a Lenovo tablet as well as a Motion Computing 1400. What seems somewhat strange to me is the silence coming from Motion Computing and Sahara. You’d think they would be all over this form factor.

I love tablets. I actually am disappointed when I use a regular desktop or laptop. I am consistently reaching to touch the screen. Despite the lack of inking, I think the iPad is going to be so comfortable to non-tablet users that it is going to convert a ton of people to the form factor. Us inkers will still be pushed off to the side. Definitely too bad. If there was a Windows option that could ink and was as touch friendly as the Apple I think it could be a hit. I think inking does require a steeper learning curve then touch. But a windows option shows up a year latter it will be irrelevant to the many that already learned to live without a stylus.

Still no official word on inking support? Bummer! That’s the only thing holding me back from selling my soul to HP forever, lol.

If the HP slate has the ablitltiy to ink, I’m getting one. I like the iPad and am strongly leaning towards getting one. But what I really want is a 7 to 10 inch slate with inking that will replace my aging Motion M1400. I live on Onenote all day at work.

I’ll order the first device that meets those critera.

Nothing clear on inking, and no visible stylus silo on the videos I’ve seen. Maybe we’ll be lucky and there will be another Cross stylus (man, I miss mine), but it looks like we are so enamored with flicks and switches we may have lost sight of the superiority of inking.

That Notion Ink Adam Tablet looks very interesting. No inking of course but purposed price seemed right.

Ahhh, if MSFT would just port an iPad version of Onenote over….game over for me… Its al about note taking, and keeping those notes organized for me. Thats why, although I ordered my iPad as well, I’m still holding out hope that the Dev community will come out with a special app (maybe its what Evernote does?) for takine and organizing notes on the iPad. It’s a gamble for sure….but I have not been let down with the app options for my iPhone. I’ve got to say, this slate is looking more attractive though if it was built around inking.

How large is the sreen going to be?
    Anything about screen resolution?
Does it give the overall dimensions/weight?

I hope this Slate won’t disappoint. HP has been on the hot seat for their failing video cards on their Laptops and Tablets with no support from them at all.

Count me in for an HP slate if it supports inking/OneNote.
