HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich Update Cancellation Explained

Published

on

In the midst of complaints from owners and uncertainty surrounding the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update, HTC has explained why it cancelled the HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich update.

In a blog post that was first discovered by Android Central, the company has explained exactly why it cancelled the update in an attempt to control the damage that the cancellation has caused.

The company explains that the reason why it wasn’t able to push the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was because of the way the device’s hard drive is partitioned. With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich being as big as it is, HTC says that it would require users to re-partition their hard drives which would then overwrite user data upon installation.

So while more advanced users could probably get the update up and running, HTC says that the average user would not and that it didn’t want to compromise the experience for them with a shoddy update.

HTC has apologized to HTC Desire HD owners.

The company says that even after installing the update , the software performed poorly during testing.

So the partition issues coupled with poor performance led to the cancellation of the HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich update, something that HTC clearly feels bad about. It has apologized to Desire HD owners as it originally promised to release the update.

Despite the issues with the HTC Desire HD, the company has not yet cancelled the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update. The HTC ThunderBolt share similar specifications so it’s unclear if the device will perform any better on Verizon’s variant of the HTC Desire HD.

We’ve heard that we might find out next week but as of yet, HTC has been silent.

I think it would be a good idea if they test the phone and then make the promise!

I am a Motorola Bionic owner. Be happy they apologized and explained why you weren’t getting ICS. Motorola and Verizon are leaving us in the dark and don’t feel the need to apologize for anything.

Props and right on, Brother. My experience with the Droid OG gave me a similar bad experience. Moto and VZW incessantly promised updates, missed them, them replied with big, fat FUs to customers asking for updates on the very pushes that Moto and VZ promised. Even with Google ownership, Moto and Google burden their lineup with Motoblur crapware. Samsung’s been decent about pushing updates. I root and unlock, but devs create for devices like Samsung w big volumes. Google’s fragmented mess and its inexcusable delay in its phantom Nexus 5 drove me to iOS. It’s fun learning a new OS and seeing the primitive keyboard and interfaces on iOS in light of fanboy delusion. Whatever you say about Apple, its 5S is fast. If the Nexus 5 had been ready on time and available on Verizon, I’d have bought it. Instead, I dropped >$800 for the iOS 5 to keep my unlimited data.
