HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat Release Date Firms Up

Published

on

The HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update release date continues to firm up as a new carrier has confirmed an update for its device during the month of January, the same month that the update is supposed to land in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Last week, Google announced a brand new smartphone and a brand new Android update. The Nexus 5 is already out on shelves with its new Android 4.4 KitKat software but it will soon be joined by a number of other devices that will see Android 4.4 KitKat replace their current version of Android. One of those devices is the HTC One, HTC’s current flagship and a device that currently resides on Android 4.3.

HTC has been extremely proactive this year with Android updates and the company continued that trend last week when it confirmed an HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update for arrival and said that the software would arrive within 90 days. That time frame means that the update should come to users by January 29th. HTC USA confirmed that all carriers in the U.S. would get the update within 90 days and over the last few days, we’ve seen that timing firm up.

Yesterday, we saw HTC UK announce that it plans to upgrade the HTC One with Android 4.4 KitKat in late January, same as the United States and today, we’re seeing more information trickle out as French carrier SFR has confirmed an update for sometime in January, something that helps to further cement HTC’s ambitions.

The carrier doesn’t specify an exact date or confirm what will be on board the software when it arrives but that’s not important at the moment. What is important is that another carrier has come out of the gates and confirmed fairly specific timing for the update, timing that matches up nicely with HTC’s own deadline. So, at this point, we expect the software to roll out to owners in January at the latest.

The software is expected to deliver not only Android 4.4 KitKat but enhancements to HTC’s Sense 5.5 software. In the case of some devices, like the HTC One’s in the United States, it could deliver Sense 5.5 itself. HTC hasn’t confirmed those details but the company has rolled out major Sense updates with major Android updates in the past.
