HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat Release Dates Missing as Clock Ticks

Published

on

With the clock ticking on its promised January release, HTC still hasn’t committed to any concrete HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update release dates in the United States. Instead, the company continues to say that an HTC One Android 4.4 update release in January is the company’s “target” something that shouldn’t instill confidence in HTC One owners.

Way back in November, HTC made some bold promises in regard to the HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update. The company said that it would roll out the HTC One Google Play Edition update within 15 days, the Developer Edition update within 30 days and the regular HTC One update within 90 days of the Android 4.4 KitKat announcement.

So far, HTC has kept its word. The Google Edition and Developer Edition have both received their upgrades to Android 4.4, in the case of the Google Play Edition it’s now on Android 4.4.2. It’s now the middle of January and HTC still hasn’t rolled out the regular HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update nor has it committed to any dates, something that has prompted HTC One owners to ask questions. And rightfully so.

In the past, HTC has made promises that it hasn’t been able to keep, most recently with the Verizon HTC One Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update which was delayed well past its initial target release. American carriers, particularly Verizon, are known to be finicky when it comes to Android software releases.

Pressed for answers, HTC President Jason Mackenzie only says that the company is still targeting the end of January for release and still won’t to commit to specific dates or provide any further information. Mo Versi, HTC’s Executive Director of Product Management, who has been very forthcoming with update information, has remained silent.

So while there is cause for concern, the company is still acting like the updates are on track to arrive by the end of the month and HTC One owners in the United States should be hopeful that the company can keep its word.

HTC is also expected to deploy HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat updates in Europe and in Canada before the end of the month. HTC UK, as recently as today, claims that the update is still scheduled to roll out before the month is over.

One thing that we do know is that some carriers won’t be rolling out the HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update until February, a little later than expected.

When the Android 4.4 KitKat update does touch down for the HTC One, it will bring the new Sense 5.5 along with it. Sense 5.5 improves on Sense, delivering enhancements to HTC BlinkFeed and Zoe, among other things.

At this point isn’t it up to the service providers not HTC as they have given the cell carriers the code they carriers are doing their own tests and such?

Just got 4.4 on my Sprint HTC one this morning

I’m so happy that HTC is keeping up with these updates and as always sprint is very good about rolling out the updates. Night and day from my old verizon/motorola phone.

your right, I saw the update this morning and assumed it was the 4.4 update but it was just a minor sprint update that rolled out 2 days ago. Mine must have just been late.

Terrible Journalism. HTC One never promised a January release date. They said January-Feb. and even provide a web site for one to check the status of the update as to be transparent as possible: https://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-software-updates/

As you can see, the project is still in the integration phase. Certification tends to take the longest.
