HTC ThunderBolt Receiving Post-ICS Update

Published

A few weeks after Verizon finally rolled out the HTC ThunderBolt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update comes word that the carrier has approved another post-ICS update for the HTC ThunderBolt that unfortunately isn’t Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but instead, is a small enhancement update that should roll out in the next few days.

Earlier this year, after a lengthy delay, the HTC ThunderBolt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update rolled out to owners of Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone. The update was met with mixed reviews from owners who endured the wait. Now though, it appears that Verizon is set to roll out a new update for the HTC ThunderBolt, though it’s unclear if it will solve all of the issues that owners have been having.

Verizon has posted the update on its support page, a sign that it has approved the update for roll out in the days ahead. The carrier will more than likely roll out the software to owners in phases though it’s unclear just when that roll out might take place.

What is known, however, is that the update is a small update that will be bringing some enhancements to the table. The list of improvements includes functionality for the microphone when HAC is enabled, improvements to HTC Watch, visible Amber Alerts, improved text messaging, and improvements to Exchange and Yahoo! mail.

The latter two fixes should go a long way with remaining HTC ThunderBolt owners. What Verizon doesn’t address though are the lag issues that ThunderBolt owners have encountered with the software. We’ve heard from numerous owners who have been experiencing lag issues after installing Android 4.0 but this update does not seem to address those problems.

This has been a pretty interesting past few weeks for the HTC ThunderBolt with the Android 4.0 roll out and now a second update just after its second birthday celebration.

What it also means is that while the HTC ThunderBolt will now have two updates under its belt since the Android 4.0 delay, the Droid Incredible 2, which saw its ICS update delayed alongside the ThunderBolt’s, is still without ICS or an update of any sort.

The original ICS update was good, after a few days to shake out issues, and several reboots/cold starts. I experienced some sluggishness, but I chalked that up to the fact that the T-Bolt was single-core.

I downloaded 4.0.4 this weekend, and was surprised by the responsiveness of the phone post-upgrade. I may just keep the phone for a while after the expiration of the 2-year contract. It does everything I expect it to do.
