Installous is Dead, But Evasi0n Jailbreak Shows Piracy Isn’t

Published

on

One of the biggest complaints about jailbreaking is the contingent of jailbreakers who use the jailbreak to pirate apps with Installous and Installous alternatives.

Many in the jailbreak community look forward to the evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak so they can customize their iPhone and get closer to an Open iOS, which is what the evad3rs have in mind when the evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak release happened earlier today.

The other group of jailbreakers are excited for the evasi0n jailbreak so that they can pirate apps that they would otherwise need to pay for in the official app store.

Installous Alternatives Piracy Not Dead

Installous is dead, but piracy isn’t.

Installous was the go to tool for app pirates who used a jailbreak to allow the iPhone or iPad to install apps not from the app store, but when Hackulous closed, and took Installous with it, at the end of 2012 many though piracy would not be as big of a problem for the next jailbreak.

As it turns out, there is still a huge demand for pirating apps, as evidenced by numerous Tweets looking forward to using Installous or discussing Installous alternatives.

Several users are already asking evad3rs team members MuscleNerd and pod2g about Installous alternatives. Pod2g is vocal in his disapproval of piracy and MuscleNerd has previously asked users not to promote piracy.

The death of Installous is not stop app piracy on the iPhone and iPad, as Installous alternatives are already available for users who choose to jailbreak with evasi0n or even for users who are not jailbroken. Planetbeing recently posted his thoughts on piracy on Reddit, stating that he is against it and has thought about working in code to prevent it, and explains why it hasn’t happened.

Anyway, I’d love to stop piracy. I’ve even seriously thought about putting something like an anti-debugging trick into the jailbreak, as much as to show Apple how easily they could stop it for App Store piracy on jailbroken devices. But then it’d be a lot of work, end up in an arms race, and I’m sure there will be little gratitude but instead people on Twitter howling about some imagined hypocrisy. It’d just not be very fun

Many iOS 6.1 jailbreak users share the same feelings as the developers, speaking out against piracy, and talk of pirated apps is banned on the Jailbreak sub-Reddit.

It may be time for developers to bring back the Piracy Wall of Shame.

Stay tuned for the latest evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak news.

Installous has nothing to do with jailbreaking. *rolls eyes* evasi0n is what jailbreaks your device, Installous was an application used for pirating apps. You had to be jailbroken to use Installous, but aside from that, the two are completely unrelated.

**EDIT** There were a lot of so called dead projects out there that were later picked up and revived.

I agree all of those installous alternatives are horrible, but if you wait a little longer you’ll see that someone will take the responsibility that hackulous oce had because of the high demand for a pirated appstore. Until then just use piratebay.se or some other website to download cracked apps for your jailbroken device then sync it on itunes. Its just as easy.

Yup, it’s time to move to android, I just did, I can’t believe I didnt do it sooner. It made me realize how boring the iphone was.

Yes Android is so much better anyway. Things you need to jailbreak an iDevice for you can already do in Android either built in or 3rd party apps you can get through the default app source without any sort of hack or exploit. Yes you can Root to get more features but unless your a hardcore gamer looking to overclock or you want to install Cyangenmod or other aftermarket firmware you dont really need to. BTW Nexus 4 beats the iPhone 5 in almost every way.

It’s awesome that the article seems to be largely condemning piracy & trying to shame the people who do it, but the comments are all discussing what the best piracy apps are, And why not? I, for one, am the type who would never have actually bought the apps I downloaded via Installous. I got them because I could get them for free, so the developers didn’t miss out on any profits on my account; they have, however, gotten lots of good word of mouth out of the deal. Come to think of it, they never paid me for promoting their apps…those dirty thieves!

If you’re the person who wrote this, learn about your subject matter before you write an article that makes you look foolish. The point of jailbreaking is not to steal apps. The point is to be able to install apps, tweaks, themes, and utilities that AREN’T approved by Apple. Pirating happens, yes. However, not everyone does it who is jailbroken and half the people who do, is so they can try an app before they buy it. iTunes has a no refund policy that just essentially screws you if you buy an app and end up hating it. There are a billion reasons why people jailbreak- not everyone who does it is a dastardly criminal.

Good. Lord. AppCake sucks. It sucks there are so many cheapskates in the world Hackulous did all the work for Installous and never asked anyone for a dime. They only asked for donations. Hackulous couldn’t afford to keep their servers running b/c there was such a massive user base but no one was kind enough to throw them $5 for their hard work and expensive energy bills. So, to everyone complaining about Installous being gone, if you didn’t donate, it’s your fault. Hope the people who didn’t make contributions are happy. I also hope the greedy users will read this and stop complaining.

      02/20/2013 at 11:19 pm

Yeah cut that donation bullcrap out. They knew what they were getting themselves into. They should have manned up and asked for a fee or outright not make the damn app in the first place.

Also, I’d like my donations back. I’m such an idiot to trust that my money will be used wisely, and not as pocket change.

      • Jenn

        02/21/2013 at 12:14 am

Yes, dear. You’re right- it was absolutely stupid for them to create and maintain an awesome series of apps, that tons of people used, and expect some kindness in return. Those jerks should have known better than to give people the benefit of the doubt. Just in case you didn’t catch the sarcasm dripping from my previous statement, I’m pointing it out for you now.

Also, how would you have any idea what the donations were used for? Something had to have paid for 5 generations of apps and updates…. Oh, and pro tip, kiddo: Maybe if you donated more than “pocket change” then perhaps you wouldn’t feel as if your funds were used as such.

People like you make my skin crawl… You would ask for your “pocket change” donation back. Personally, I think it’s the users responsibility to “man up” and give a donation to show their appreciation to the well-meaning developers, instead of just expecting something for nothing.

To your favor, I’ll admit, you are absolutely correct about one thing: You are definitely an idiot.

My goodness you morons. Just add a repository to Cydia like…Sinfuliphone or iHackMyi…then download an older version of Installous or Install0us. The older versions still install .ipa files. Just find the files on the internet from sites like PandaApp.com or even Google. Then transfer the downloaded files using iFile from whatever web browser you use that has a download manager. Place the files into the Installous Downloads folder. Then open Installous and press Install. Its not that different than before besides the fact that you can’t browse for apps using Installous anymore…but an older version from one of those repositories will still download the ipa file. It may not be the Hackulous previous versions of Installous but they’re exactly the same. You just have to do a little more work with downloading the ipa files from a web broswer and then transferring them. Its not hard…nor is it anything to be crying over or raising hell over. Thats another bad thing about the jailbreak community despite all the piracy…there are more and more dumbass noobs everyday.

    • Jenn

      02/21/2013 at 12:34 am

Bro, “noobs”? Seriously? The fact that you just used the word “noobs” automatically shoots your credibility right in the head.

Btw, everyone knows there are other ways to pirate. Installous offered a user friendly app, which I don’t think is a bad thing.

Why are you being a hater about the jailbreak community, anyway? Judging by your knowledge of how to steal an .ipa, you’re clearly part of the jailbreak community. Which means you were one of those “dumbass noobs” once, too.

      • Dude Person

        03/30/2013 at 10:30 am

That may very well be true that at one point I was a newbie in the jailbreak community. But I have been a developer for years. Also I never pissed and moaned on forums because I couldn’t find ways to make stealing easier and more user friendly. You figure the technical shit out before you download software…any intelligent person can tell you that. That’s the main reason I hate on the present jailbreak community. It has changed dramatically. It used to be a respectful group of developers and hackers. Now it’s nothing more than idiots, thieves, and newbies that have absolutely no knowledge of what jaibreaking an iDevice is really for…’software development’. Instead these morons assume its just for cracked apps. Oh, and btw…the fact that I called the community a bunch of noobs doesn’t say anything about my credibility. I’m a software developer with a couple of utility apps on AppStore and Cydia. I know piracy will always be there, but that never concerned me. If someone is going to download a cracked version of my app instead of purchasing it, then they weren’t ever going to purchase it anyways. So go take a nap Jenn…I’m sure everybody on this thread has heard enough of your shenanigans as well. Good Day!

    03/09/2013 at 10:28 pm

Installous wasn’t necessary for piracy. It just made it easier. Without Installous, they download apps to the computer and sync instead of downloading directly to the iphone with Installous.

The app store is so terrible at filtering out scams or garbage. I’m disappointed that installous is dead, not because I want free games, but because it was a good tool to use to preview apps before buying them. There are a few app makers out there who now have my money even though they don’t deserve it. With programs like installous, you can download those apps and test them first. If they’re great, pay for them through the appstore and leave positive feedback. If they don’t work properly, aren’t what you expected, a scam, or so poorly made that they might as well be a scam, you don’t have to be out of pocket for something you’ll never use again.
