iOS 11 Emoji: 5 Things You Need to Know

They aren’t available in the iOS 11 beta yet but new emoji will be coming to the iPhone and iPad inside an iOS 11 update later this year.

The Unicode Consortium recently released Unicode 10.0 and it includes new emoji characters like sandwich, vampire, and broccoli. The update also delivers a set of Typicon marks and symbols, and a Bitcoin sign.

The new emoji were originally previewed back in March but the Consortium has narrowed the list down to a 56 new emoji characters. This list is final which means companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft can now include them in updates for their products.

In celebration of World Emoji Day, Apple’s confirmed plans to release new emoji for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch. Th company’s also confirmed new emoji for a couple of its other platforms.

Here’s what iOS, Mac, and Apple Watch users need to know about these new emojis as we push into summer.

New Emoji for iOS 11 & More

New emoji characters are coming to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and they’re also headed to devices running macOS and watchOS.

Apple doesn’t explicitly say it in its announcement but we expect these emoji characters to arrive inside iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, and watchOS 4 updates.

If your device is compatible with one of these operating systems, you’ll be able to use, and see, all of the new emoji characters when they’re released.

If you don’t own a device that’s compatible with iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, or watchOS 4, you most likely won’t be able to use or see the emoji characters when friends send them to you in messages.

iOS 11 Beta

The current version of iOS 11 doesn’t include any new emoji for the iPhone or iPad and it’s unclear if the new characters will be pushed into the beta ahead of the update’s release this fall.

For now, you’ll need to find another reason to try the iOS 11 beta on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

iOS 11 Emoji Release Date

Apple hasn’t confirmed a specific date but it says it will release new emoji characters to iOS, macOS, and watchOS users before the end of the year.

iOS 11.1?

Last year, the company used its iOS 10.2 update to deliver Unicode 9.0 support and 70+ new emoji characters to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple’s iOS 10.2 update arrived in mid-December, months after the conclusion of the iOS 10 beta and several weeks after the official iOS 10 release.

If the company sticks to the same pattern, we could see a milestone upgrade like iOS 11.1 or iOS 11.2 deliver these new emoji to iPhone and iPad users around the world.

Apple’s iOS 11 update is currently in beta ahead of a wider release this fall.

The iOS 11 beta includes new features like Siri voice translation, the ability to screen record, a redesigned Control Center, tweaks to the home screen and Notifications, and many other changes from iOS 10.

The company’s beta is plagued with issues including severe battery drain, connectivity issues, and problems with first and third-party apps.
