iOS 4.2 for iPad Beta Video Walkthrough

Published

on

After using my iPhone 4 for almost three months, the iPad is starting to feel a bit stale. I find myself trying to perform iOS4 tasks on the iPad, forgetting that it runs on an obsolete operating system. Fortunately, iOS4.2 for iPad is just around the corner and it looks great so far. Our friend Andru Edwards from Gearlive put together a nice walk through of iOS 4.2 or iPad  that shows off many of its new features and quirks.

On the plus side, iOS4.2 brings multitasking, Folders, Game Center and Airplay. Multitasking is the improvement I’m looking forward to the most. One thing that looks like a mistake to me is that iOS4.2 for iPad transforms the switch on the right side of the iPad from an orientation lock to a mute button. Screen orientation is now a soft switch that accessible in the multitasking ribbon that’s revealed when you double tap the home button. The volume toggle on the left side of the iPad already acts as a mute button when you hold it down. The new screen orientation lock scheme means you have to perform four actions (tap the home button twice, swipe once, tap to lock/unlock) rather than one action to lock the screen with iOS3.

iOS 4.2 for iPad is available now for iOS developers, but I recommend waiting for the official rollout. The current version has a handful of bugs, including an issue that seems to cause folders to disappear, dumping apps all over the place.

Worst thing I have heard all week. I love the physical screen lock switch. I’m ready to multi-task, but this is a bummer.
