iOS 7: Biggest Change to iOS Since iPhone

Published

on

Apple announced iOS 7 at the WWDC 2013 keynote in California.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO calls iOS 7, “The biggest change to iOS since the iPhone.”

iOS 7 is a new look for iOS 7 throughout the system, including new typography, new icon designs and a new set of colors that combine with layers to emphasize importance of events.

The iPhone and iPad now offer faster control of settings through toggles, movement control of the system when users move the iPhone, and wallpapers that change based on your background.

On top of sweeping changes, there are a host of new iOS 7 features that Apple’s Craig Federighi says is, “Like getting a new phone.”

iOS 7 is Jony Ive’s take on the iPhone and iPad software. iOS 7 offers a new look from the lock screen to the Notification Center, Multi-tasking and more. The new system includes Paralax, which lets users move the iPhone and see elements on screen change their position, allowing users to almost see behind the icons.

When users change their wallpaper, iOS 7 will change system elements to offer a new look that matches the colors in the system. There are many more iOS 7 graphical changes, which we’ll dive into soon. One feature app hoarders will love is the ability to add hundreds of apps to a folder.

It’s not all paintwork and new designs, iOS 7 offers new controls like the ability to swipe to go back in select apps, removing the need to hunt for a back button in Safari. The new Safari for iPhone is full screen with a new unified search bar and support for more than 8 tabs.

Users can gain quick control to common settings with Control Center. This lets users change common settings, turn a flashlight on, play a song, and much more. This is available throughout iOS 7.

Apple also redefined multi-tasking in iOS 7. The new system lets users see big thumbnails of the apps that are running, which makes finding the right app easier.

We also get AirDrop for iOS, which lets users share files wirelessly between iPhones without the need to tap phones or to be on the same WiFi Network. AirDrop will work on the iPhone 5, iPad 4, iPad mini and iPod touch 5th gen.

iOS 7 will also feature better integration with cars, including the ability to put Maps and screens on the car dash of select cars. Apple also added the ability to tie the iPhone to an account so users can’t reactivate it without your login information if it is stolen.

Stay tuned for an iOS 7 on iPhone 5 hands on.
