iOS 7 Release Date is Not September 10th, Despite Claims on Twitter

Published

Despite the buzz on Twitter, the iOS 7 release date is not likely for September 10th, and users are better off not waiting up for the iOS 7 download to arrive at midnight, and get some sleep to be ready for a late night iPhone 5s pre-order instead.

Starting this weekend and moving through the start of the week, Twitter has been overrun with tweets claiming the iOS 7 release date is confirmed for September 10th.

Hundreds of Tweets proclaim the iOS 7 release is almost here and there are even a few that claim the iOS 7 release is set for midnight tonight, before Apple’s iPhone and iOS 7 event.

The iOS 7 release date is not September 10th.

It’s not clear why the iOS 7 release date of September 10th is still stuck in the minds of the masses, though it is probably traced back to the iOS 7 release date email sent by Nuance claiming to expect the new software on the 10th, an email which was soon pulled.

Here are a few of the iOS 7 release date predictions from Twitter users. This small collection already has over 500 retweets, and there are many other iOS 7 release date tweets coming in.

Despite the claims of an official iOS 7 release date, there is almost no chance Apple will deliver an iOS 7 download to the average user tomorrow and no chance the iOS 7 release date comes at midnight tonight before the actual event.

We do expect an iOS 7 GM release tomorrow. Apple released the iOS GM or Gold Master after the new iPhone event for the last three major iOS releases, and we don’t think it will change this year.

The iOS 7 GM is the final beta of iOS 7 that represents the version Apple will offer as an iOS 7 download over the air later this month. It’s essentially the last test drive to make sure there are no surprises for the regular user.

The iOS 7 release date for the general public is likely September 18th, two days before the rumored iPhone 5S release date. For the past four major iOS releases, Apple delivered the update two to three days before the new iPhone release date. This allows users to upgrade and get support ahead of a very busy new iPhone release when stores and AppleCare support lines are clogged.

The Apple event takes place on September 10th at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern in Cupertino, California. Apple has not yet announced a live stream for the special event.
