iOS 7 Release Date: What to Expect

Published

on

With the iPhone 5S launch date now confirmed for September 10th in Cupertino, we also now know when Apple is likely to announce an iOS 7 release date. And ahead of that announcement, it’s time to take a look at what iPhone and iPad owners can expect from the release of Apple’s brand new, redesigned operating system.

In June, Apple announced its new operating system, one that will replace last year’s iOS 6 that arrived with the iPhone 5 and brought the new Apple Maps, Passbook, Do Not Disturb and a host of other features. However, unlike iOS 6, the new iOS 7 will not only be coming with new features but a full-on redesign, something that iOS hasn’t seen since the arrival of the first iPhone.

Here is what to expect from the iOS 7 release date.

Here is what to expect from the iOS 7 release date.

Apple took the time to demo some of iOS 7 at WWDC, showcasing many of the redesigned applications including the operating system’s camera app, the new lock screen, the brand new multitasking, improved Notifications and more. And while Apple give iPhone and iPad owners a look at its brand new software, it likely didn’t reveal the whole thing.

Back in June, Apple also released the iOS 7 beta for the iPhone, and later for the iPad, which developers have been putting through the paces in an effort to quell any bugs that might be on board. In that span, we’ve also heard about some possible hidden features including 120fps video and slow-motion video, both of which could be exclusives to the iPhone 5S, Apple’s new iPhone.

With iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S, we saw the introduction of Siri, an exclusive for the iPhone 4S. So, we could see Apple detail some things we haven’t seen yet on September 10th.

We should also see it announce an iOS 7 release date for owners of devices not called iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C. In the past, Apple has issued a release date at its iPhone launch so that owners know exactly when the software is going to roll out.

So, with the iPhone 5S launch fast approaching, it’s time to take a close look at what to expect from the iOS 7 release date.

iOS 7 for iPhone Release Soon

With numerous iOS 7 betas down and a rumored release date in September, iOS 7 for iPhone is almost assuredly going to be arriving sometime in the near future. Typically, Apple releases its latest version of iOS in between the iPhone launch and the iPhone release which is usually a difference of only a few days.

iPhone 5S release date rumors point to September 20th which means that somewhere between September 10th and September 20th is all but guaranteed for the iOS 7 for iPhone release date.

There have even been rumors of an iOS 7 release on September 10th, same day as the iPhone launch, something that could certainly happen. We haven’t seen an iOS 7 Gold Master yet, something that comes before a final release, but we have heard that iPhone models have begun shipping ahead of the release date which could mean that they have final software on board.

Apple has released GMs extremely close to release dates so it’s possible that we could see it land right before September 10th ahead of a quick release. Whatever the case, expect an iPhone iOS 7 update to hit the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 soon after the iPhone 5S is announced.

iOS 7 for iPad with iPhone, Or in October

The iPad iOS 7 release date is a little trickier. For one, we’ve heard that the iPad iOS 7 update may have been delayed thanks, in part, to issues that developers have been having with the software. 9to5Mac recently reported that the software is less stable than the iPhone version and thus, could require more testing.

Remember, the iOS 7 for iPad beta rolled out two weeks after the iPhone’s beta and there is talk that the iOS 7 beta is still not as polished as the iPhone version, possibly because it’s two weeks behind.

If the iPad iOS 7 update doesn’t emerge with the update for the iPhone, consumers should expect it to roll out at some point in October, around the time of the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 launch event that is supposed to take place. Perhaps it will roll out that day, perhaps not, but if it doesn’t land this month, it will likely land around Apple’s upcoming iPad event.

Roll Outs in AM or Early Afternoon

Apple keeps the exact timing of its iOS updates a secret all the way up until the day of the roll out. So, iPhone and iPad owners need to expect to be in the dark about exact timing. However, the company does tend to stick to a formula as far as timing is concerned.

Usually, iOS updates roll out in the morning, around 1PM EST. We’ve seen that happen numerous times in the past and so consumers should expect an early morning, early afternoon release for iOS 7.

Our new iOS 7 video highlights the new iOS 7 features and we offer a possible iOS 7 release date.

iOS updates typically roll out in the morning.

If Apple does release the iOS 7 update on September 10th, we’d expect it to roll out sometime after the company is done talking, possibly around noon on the west coast. If it announces another release date between September 10th and September 20th, we’d imagine that it will roll out much sooner than that, likely around 10AM PST.

Installation Issues

iPhone and iPad owners should expect to encounter installation issues. It won’t happen to everyone, particularly those that take the steps to prepare for the update, but there will be plenty of owners who run into problems trying to install the update or issues after installing the update.

With iOS 5, we saw Apple’s servers crumble under the pressure as those looking to download were met with errors. We didn’t see the same widespread problem with iOS 6 but there were still plenty of people that were unable to install the new software for various reasons.

In preparation for the iOS 7 update and possible issues, we recommend backing up any and all files. That way, if any issues do arise, owners will be able to restore with everything intact.

For many, the process will be smooth but there are always people, particularly those with older phones, that run into some problems installing through iTunes and sometimes, Over-the-Air.

App Issues

iPhone and iPad owners should expect some app issues to arise on iOS 7 release day. While developers have been working to get apps prepared for the iOS 7 release date, there are likely going to be some applications that still have issues on board.

Applications behaving badly is something that generally happens after a major iOS update though we typically see issues ironed out shortly after complaints pour out. For the most part, we should see apps behave well but there will likely be some rotten eggs.

We could also see owners of the iPhone 3GS run into problems on iOS 7 release date due to the fact that some app updates will support iOS 7 only. The iPhone 3GS won’t be getting iOS 7 and thus, it will likely not see support for at least some applications, perhaps as early as day one.

The only way to get around this will be by upgrading to an iPhone that supports iOS 7. Apple is bringing the update to the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and the aging iPhone 4.

Confused iPhone Owners

Many of those who download iOS 7 on day one are going to be extremely confused. Why? Well, the iOS interface has remained relatively the same for years and iOS 7 represents a massive change in terms of features and looks.

Those who haven’t been following along are going to find a Safari browser that looks much different than the browser in iOS 6. Those who have been comfortable with the icons, the camera app, the way the user interface transitions from screen to screen are likely going to feel less comfortable with iOS 7.

Owners who haven’t been following along are advised to take an in-depth look at iOS 7 ahead of time in order to familiarize with an update that is the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone rolled out all the way back in 2007.

Lack of iOS 7 Jailbreak

The iOS 7 jailbreak front has been relatively silent and while we still expect developers to come through with a jailbreak at some point in the future, iPhone and iPad owners need to temper their expectations.

Expect there to be an iOS 7 jailbreak, just not on release day.

Expect there to be an iOS 7 jailbreak, just not on release day.

iPhone and iPad owners need to expect there not to be an iOS 7 jailbreak available on the first day of availability. Not only is likely to take more time than that to perfect, we saw last year’s Evasi0n jailbreak land for iOS 6.1 not iOS 6.0.

If an iOS 7 jailbreak does arrive, expect it to arrive for iOS 7.1 and not iOS 7 or any of the updates in between. Even though iOS 7 adds features which required a jailbreak in the past, there will still be jailbreak apps and tweaks that give users a reason to free their iPhone or iPad.

They do and it is the content you download, record and create… The medium is the message and the message is the function of ‘customizing’. :P

I’ve read on another article that there is no way we can stay incurrent iOS 6.0 and anywhere in betweem. True or false ?

Also will this update run smoothly for iPhone 4? Or slow down my processor ? .-.

It will make it run faster, iOS 7 is made so apps put less stress on your processor by making all unused apps freeze and prolongs battery life, Overall even if you don’t like the appearance, it’s better for your iphone.

I do not like the icons in IOS 7. They are kind of too simple and boring at a same time.
Also, I do not understand, why they’ve gone from 3D icons to 2D. I liked the previous ones ..

Its like going back from cell phones to land-line phones from previous era..
may be Apple should consider to stop going with their “SIMPLE ICONS” cr*p…
