iOS 8.1.2 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

Apple’s new iOS 8.1.2 update delivers bug fixes for iOS 8 problems to iPhone and iPad users. According to iPhone and iPad users though, it doesn’t fix everything and it brings some iOS 8 problems of its own. With iOS 8.1.2 problems a topic of discussion amongst iOS users, we want to take a look at what you need to know about the issues plaguing Apple’s latest iOS update.

In September, Apple released the iOS 8 update that it announced at WWDC in June. The iOS 8 update, as expected, did not deliver the massive changes that arrived with last year’s iOS 7 update. Instead, the iOS 8 update builds on the platform that iOS 7 left behind adding some new features of its own. It’s an important update and one that many iPhone and iPad users have downloaded in the time since its release.

As we’ve noted many times, the iOS 8 update also delivered a number of iOS 8 problems to iPhone and iPad users. And in the weeks since its release, Apple’s engineers have been hard at work squashing these bugs, stabilizing the software.

First, the company pushed out an iOS 8.0.1 update. Next, Apple rolled out iOS 8.0.2. After a stint in the beta program, Apple pushed out its iOS 8.1 update that was chock full of fixes and introduced Apple Pay to iPhone 6 users. A few weeks ago, Apple released iOS 8.1.1 to tackle some of the ongoing issues and earlier this week, Apple replaced iOS 8.1.1 with its new iOS 8.1.2 release.

iPhone 6 Review - 2

Apple’s new iOS 8.1.2 is not a big update, checking in at around 20MB for most iPhone and iPad users. However, these small iOS updates always have the potential to have a huge impact on performance, positively or negatively. Already, we’re hearing about the negative as iPhone and iPad users have begun to complain about various bugs and issues.

With iOS 8.1.2 problems swirling, we want to take a look at everything you need to know about these issues. This roundup offers a look at the issues themselves, potential fixes, and a look at what the future of iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch looks like at the moment.

iOS 8.1.2 Problems Plague iPhone Users

In the days after the iOS 8.1.2 release, we’re starting hear and see complaints about iOS 8.1.2 problems. We’ve pointed out a number of those issues already including various battery life issues, issues with text messages, the usual array of Wi-Fi problems, problems with the front-facing camera, installation issues, problems with email, and so on. Apple’s Discussion Forums are starting to fill up with complaints about iOS 8.1.2 problems and lingering iOS 8 problems that iOS 8.1.2 failed to fix.

One iPhone 5 user tells us that his LTE speeds have slowed down significantly after the iOS 8.1.2 update. He also tells us that “the overall speed of the phone is lagging, my home button especially when I try to shut down apps is unresponsive.” Another iPhone 5 user tells us that his device has experienced “severe performance degradation” after the update. He adds more:

Yes it has been shown to cut performance on some of those older devices by as much as 50%. And this comes from techs at other K12 districts who did some testing as soon as the patch was released.

For the record, we have not run into any major issues on the iPhone 5 or any of the other iOS 8 powered devices in our possession. It’s not surprising given that iOS 8.1.1 treated most of our devices well.

We point these out for a reason. iPhone and iPad users, even those of you that have owned a device for a long time, need to be cautious when it comes to iOS updates, even small ones like iOS 8.1.2. That’s why we always recommend preparing for these iOS releases. You may not be able to completely stop all of the bugs from surfacing but you can try.

There Aren’t a Ton of iOS 8.1.2 Problems, Yet

Now, it’s also important to point out that we’re not getting the same volume of complaints that we saw after the iOS 8.1.1 and iOS 8.1 updates. Apple’s Discussion Forums and our inboxes were flooded with complaints about both of those updates. That’s a pretty good sign though iOS 8.1.2 is still very new it did not get the same kind of publicity as the last two. Translation: Many people haven’t upgraded.

That said, we’ve spent some quality time with Apple’s latest update and we don’t think it’s going to “anger” you. In fact, iOS 8.1.2 is probably the most stable version of iOS 8 yet. We’ll reserve final judgement but so far, the update has been treating all of our devices extremely well. iOS 8.1.2 doesn’t come loaded with bug fixes but the important thing is that it doesn’t appear to come loaded with bugs either.

iPhone-5

Every single iOS update comes with its own set of problems. This is nothing new. Its been that way since Apple first started rolling out iOS updates many moons ago. From what we can tell, iOS 8.1.2 does not introduce tons of new issues. And while it might not have fixed every lingering iOS 8 issue but software updates are never perfect.

Yes, there are problems but there is no reason to panic, especially when you consider the fact that there are potential fixes for many of the iOS 8.1.2 problems you might encounter after getting it on board.

There Are Fixes for iOS 8.1.2 Problems

If you are dealing with iOS 8.1.2 problems, we’ve put together a list of fixes for the most common bugs. These fixes, which range from solutions for battery life problems to fixes for installation problems, aren’t going to work for everyone but they’re worth a look if you’ve jumped up to iOS 8.1.2 and you’re having issues on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

Now, those are going to be a great start point, however, we think you should expand your horizons. Apple’s Discussion Forums typically provide a number of potential fixes for serious issues and the MacRumors community is solid as well. Keep these in mind so that if you do run into issues with iOS 8.1.2, and you may, that you’re ready to fix whatever is plaguing your device. Usually, there’s a solution out there.

You Can Go Back to iOS 8.1.1

At this point, you can go back to iOS 8.1.1 if iOS 8.1.2 is giving you problems. It’s not clear how long this opportunity will last, Apple will likely close it up at some point, but if you do want to move back to iOS 8.1.1, we’ve got you covered with a detailed guide. Just replace iOS 8.1 with iOS 8.1.2 and the directions will make sense.

iOS 8.2 Release Date Inching Closer

If you can’t find a permanent fix for your iOS 8.1.2 problems and you don’t want to move back down to iOS 8.1.1, you’re simply going to have to hold out hope that Apple’s next iOS update fixes those issues.

iPhone-5-1

Apple’s next major iOS 8 update is expected to be the iOS 8.2 update that’s currently in the beta program. Apple recently released iOS 8.2 beta 2 and while there weren’t any significant developments, the update does come with bug fixes on board. We fully expect it to come with a much larger change log than the iOS 8.1.2 update and there’s a chance that it will pick up where the iOS 8.1 update left off. There’s no guarantee though.

Keep in mind, iOS 8.2 will almost certainly let some bugs linger and potentially deliver some new bugs of its own so if you are experiencing iOS 8.1.2 problems, you’ll want to be very proactive.

I just installed 8.1.2 on my two year old iPad, and it seems to have shut it down. If I press the power button, I see the Apple logo for perhaps 5 seconds, and then it goes dark again. Any idea what happened and how to get my iPad back and functioning?
    Thanks,
    Al

Do you have any idea if/when Apple will patch iOS 8.1.1 or 8.1.2 by adding a DELETE ALL choice for email? I get about 50-60 emails each day, and it’s ridiculous and annoying to have to delete them one by one

    Thank you

This entire article could have been summed up as follows: “8.1.2 is not perfect and will not fix everything and comes with bugs of its own. The next update is 8.2 and it is currently in beta. It will also not fix everything and come with bugs of its own.” Thanks so much for that stunningly unhelpful article. I have to ask: do you get paid by the word? And how in the world did you manage to get such a useless collection of words ranked so high by Google Search? Google Search totally failed me. I will no longer open an article from “Gotta Be Mobile”.

So where is the info on how to fix the issues?? Is anyone having issues with txts since the update? My screen is rotating for the actual text pame but the keyboard stays in the normal place but without a ‘send’ button or back to messages button. It’s not major but never encountered any issue before…..
