8 Common iOS 8.1.3 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

Apple’s brand new iOS 8.1.3 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is now live and it predictably brings bug fixes for lingering iOS 8 problems to owners of the company’s mobile devices. We’re still very early in the game but we’re already hearing about iOS 8.1.3 problems plaguing the iPhone and iPad and today we want to offer some fixes for the most common complaints.

In September, Apple released its brand new iOS 8 operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Almost immediately, iPhone and iPad users started to gripe about a number of iOS 8 problems, some new and some that carried over from the company’s iOS 7 and iOS 6 updates. Over the past few months, Apple’s attempted to fix many of those problems with a series of iOS 8 bug fix updates though iOS 8 problems continue for some iPhone and iPad users.

Since September, Apple’s pushed out six iOS 8 updates including its latest, iOS 8.1.3. iOS 8.1.3 is a sizable iOS update, checking in at well over 100MB, and it brings a number of new bug fixes to the table. Included are fixes for broken iPad multitasking gestures and a fix for storage issues that used to plague iPhone and iPad users trying to install updates OTA.

The iOS 8.1.3 fixes some issues but iOS 8.1.3 problems have begun to sprout up just a day after Apple’s release. Many of those users have taken to social media and Apple’s Discussion Forums to complain. Most of these iOS 8.1.3 problems don’t appear to be widespread but that doesn’t mean that they won’t pick up pace in the future. In fact, there’s a good chance that they’ll spread as more people install Apple’s new iOS 8 update.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at some of the iOS 8.1.3 problems that have popped up over the last 24 hours and some of the problems that have the potential to pop up for iOS 8.1.3 users in the future. With an iOS 8.2 update in the beta, and a release date unknown, iPhone and iPad users will need to rely on third-party fixes for their iOS 8.1.3 problems.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Installation Problems

We’re already seeing, and receiving, a number of complaints about iOS 8.1.3 installation problems. These problems aren’t too surprising to us, given that we always seem iOS installation problems emerge immediately after an update’s arrival. While we can’t guarantee that this fix will work, it has worked for many people in the past so it’s worth sharing today.

If the iPhone or iPad gets stuck during the iOS 8.1.3 installation process, users will want to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button and home button at the same time for a few seconds until the device restarts. This typically gets the update’s juices flowing again. If it doesn’t continue automatically, it may simply start over.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Battery Life Problems

We’re already seeing several complaints about iOS 8.1.3 battery life. This doesn’t come as a surprise either. iPhone and iPad users often complain about battery life problems in the aftermath of an iOS update and iOS 8.1.3 is no different.

Fortunately, there are number of fixes to try if battery life on iOS 8.1.3 starts going downhill. We’ve put together an extensive list of fixes for bad iOS 8.1.3 battery life that iPhone and iPad users will want to take a look at if and when the device starts acting up. iOS battery life problems can occur at any time so those who aren’t experiencing them now will want to store those in the memory bank.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Wi-Fi Issues

Wi-Fi issues have been plaguing iPhone and iPad users forever and there are still tons of complaints about Wi-Fi problems on Apple’s Discussion forum. There is a lengthy thread that continues to build and now features over a half a million views. It’s clear that Wi-Fi problems are an issue for iPhone and iPad users, even after the arrival of Apple’s latest bug fix.

There are no guaranteed fixes for iOS Wi-Fi issues though there are some things that iPhone and iPad users on iOS 8.1.3 can try should connectivity start acting up after getting the update on board. These fixes have been passed down from the iOS 6, iOS 7 and older iOS 8 updates and they’ve worked for many users in the past.

The first fix is a simple one. iPhone and iPad users will want to try resetting the device’s network settings. This is an extremely easy process though it could take a couple of minutes to complete. Those experiencing Wi-Fi issues will want to set aside some time to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. To do this, open up the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Users will need the passcode and a few minutes of time because the phone or tablet is going to reboot itself after the process completes. Users will also want to track down commonly used Wi-Fi passwords because this process is going to erase Wi-Fi passwords.

If that fix doesn’t work, take a look at some of these other potential Wi-Fi fixes. We also recommend rebooting your router and or modem to see if that dislodges the problem. Often times, the router is to blame, not iOS.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Cellular Data Issues

We haven’t seen many complaints about cellular data in the early goings but that doesn’t mean that cellular data issues won’t emerge in the future. They always do. Typically, these problems don’t emerge until a few days after a release so it’s important to know how to fix them should they impact the connectivity on the iPhone or iPad.

iPhone and iPad users should first try restarting the iPhone or iPad. This has worked for us in the past. If that simple fix doesn’t work, try toggling cellular data on and off. This also has also worked for many people before. To do that, Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. It’s a quick process and one that could return things to normal assuming connectivity isn’t down in the area.

Finally, if none of that works, try flipping Airplane Mode on, waiting 30 seconds, and then flipping it off. This, like the other fixes, has worked to alleviate cellular data problems in the past. If nothing works, contact the device’s service provider.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems always emerge after an iOS update and lo and behold, we’re starting to see various complaints about Bluetooth after the iOS 8.1.3 update’s arrival. There still doesn’t appear to be a permanent fix for iOS 8 Bluetooth problems but we’ve heard about several potential remedies that iOS 8.1.3 users will want to try.

iPhone and iPad users have singled out “Reset All Settings” as a solid fix. It hasn’t worked for everyone but there are a ton of people that are claiming success after trying it on their iPhone. It could also work for the iPad and iPod touch.

To do this, open up the device and head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This is going to take a bit of time and users will lose all saved settings but the pay off is that it seems to fix problems for a number of iOS 8 users.

We also recommend resetting Bluetooth in the car if a device is failing to pair with the connection in the car. iPhone and iPad users will need to consult the car manual to do this as the process is going to vary based on make and model. Once Bluetooth is reset, try reconnecting the device to the car.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 App Issues

As we’ve noted in our early iOS 8.1.3 reviews, app performance remains strong after the iOS 8.1.3 release. That said, there’s always a chance that some users will encounter difficulties with apps after making the move.

iPhone and iPad users can’t rely on iOS updates for app fixes. Instead, users will need to rely on third-party developers (the makers of the app) and some useful changes to bad habits.

First, make sure applications on the iPhone or iPad are updated. Bug fixes and app updates with support for iOS 8 have been trickling out since launch. iPhone and iPad users who are forgetful or lazy will want to turn on automatic App Store updates because it will keep apps automatically behind the scenes. Auto updates will ensure that they are always on the latest version with the latest bug fixes. To do that, head into Settings > iTunes & App Store > Toggle Updates on.

If that doesn’t work, user will want to contact the developer of the application and relay the bug or bugs. Bringing these bugs to light could prompt developers to start paying attention and actively fix the bug in an upcoming update.

How to Improve iOS 8.1.3 Performance

While iOS 8.1.3 has been performing well on our iPhones and iPads, some users are complaining about a drop in performance. These drops typically affect owners of older devices. Fortunately, there are ways for users to try and get the device back to where it was before the iOS 8.1.3 update’s arrival.

When Apple’s iOS 8.0 update first came out, we outlined a number of different strategies including reducing animations and pretty effects, resetting settings, or restoring back to factory settings. These fixes still apply today, months after the iOS 8 update’s release.

Remember, there is no cure all for performance issues for the iPhone or iPad and users will likely need to use a lot of trial and error to try and get performance back to normal. In the past, we’ve had success with factory resets but that’s a nuclear option for most people.

How to Fix iOS 8.1.3 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If none of these fixes for iOS 8.1.3 problems work, and Apple’s discussion forums aren’t helping, we have two recommendations. First, take the iPhone or iPad to a Genius Bar at the local Apple Store. They can help diagnose the problem and potentially offer a new device if still under warranty.

Those that can’t or don’t want to take the device to the Apple Store will want to consider performing a factory reset. Factory resets will wipe the device clean, so it’s an option that we recommend only to those that can’t find a temporary or permanent fix.

To do that choose Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this will wipe everything from the iPhone or iPad, so make a back up before doing this. Again, setting all of this up will be very time consuming, but it may be the fastest way to fix bad iOS 8.1.3 problems on the iPad or iPhone.
