iOS 8.1 Release Date Confirmed

Published

on

The iOS 8.1 release date for iPhone and iPad has been confirmed today and will be arriving soon to deliver Apple Pay and alleviate iOS 8.0.2 problems and iOS 8.0 problems on Monday.

In late September, just a few weeks after iOS 8.0 came out of the beta program, Apple released iOS 8.1 beta. Apple did not attach a public iOS 8.1 release date associated with the beta, leaving consumers wondering when the update might come out. iPhone and iPad users put great importance on iOS 8.1 due to a number of iOS 8.0 issues and iOS 8.0.2 issues.

iPhone and iPad users struggling with problems now have their answer. At Apple’s media event today, the company detailed a number of new products including the OS X Yosemite release and the company’s brand new iOS 8.1 update for iOS 8. As expected, the company confirmed an iOS 8.1 release date for next week, which means that the company’s iOS 8.1 beta will be extremely short lived.

The iOS 8.1 release date is now confirmed for Monday, at which point Apple will pull the software out of the beta program and deliver it to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the world. Apple did not announce an iOS 8.1 release time, though iPhone and iPad users can expect it to arrive in and around 10AM PST.

While Apple has yet to detail the entire iOS 8.1 change log, the company did announce several new features that will arrive with the iOS 8.1 update for iPhone and iPad on Monday.

As expected, Apple Pay, Apple’s new ambitious mobile payment service, will arrive with Apple’s latest iOS 8 update. Apple Pay will make use of the NFC chips inside iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to allow users to use their device like a mobile wallet. The feature will also be available to iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s users, though the feature is limited because neither device features an NFC chip.

Apple also says that iOS 8.1 will bring back the popular Camera Roll feature that Apple axed with its iOS 8.0 release. The company will also release a public beta of iCloud Photo Library and the iOS 8.1 update will also deliver unnamed “improvements” to the iOS 8 operating system. Apple joked about getting iOS 8 “feedback” from consumers in the weeks since its arrival, but it’s clear that iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.0.2 are buggy on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and below.

iOS 8.0.2 and iOS 8 problems range from poor battery life to bad Wi-Fi, landscape issues and Bluetooth issues inside the car. And while the iOS 8.1 update will almost certainly address some of the problems inside these two iOS 8 updates, there’s a good chance that it won’t be the cure-all that iPhone and iPad users are looking for.

iOS 8.1 may not be the end of the road for iOS 8. Rumors suggest that Apple is cooking up two new iOS 8 updates in iOS 8.2 and iOS 8.3. Those two updates are rumored for 2015 and one, or both, could tie into the Apple Watch that the company is expected to release in early 2015. Apple once again confirmed its early 2015 release date on stage today.

Apple’s new iOS 8.1 update will follow in the footsteps of OS X Yosemite for Mac, an update that’s available today for Mac users, and it will be the software that helps to usher in yet another era for Apple’s iPad series. Apple today confirmed a brand new iPad Air 2 that is 18% thinner than last year’s model. Apple’s new iPad will also come with a new gold color option that matches the gold color found on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The company’s new iPad Air 2 will go on sale in just a few short days ahead of Black Friday and the holiday shipping season.
