10 Common iOS 8.3 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

Apple’s iOS 8.3 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is now available and it offers a ton of bug fixes and enhancements to Apple’s mobile devices. It also has brought iOS 8.3 problems to owners making the jump from iOS 8.2 and below. With iOS 8.3 problems in mind, we want to outline some of the more common issues and offer fixes to those struggling after updating.

In September, Apple released its brand new iOS 8 operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. In the hours after the release, iPhone and iPad users started to gripe about iOS 8.0 problems. Many of these problems were iOS 8 related and some of them were carried over from the company’s iOS 7 and iOS 6 updates.

Since that day in September, Apple’s attempted to fix many of those problems with a series of iOS 8 bug fix updates, and none bigger than the update it released earlier this week.

In the months since the initial iOS 8 release, Apple’s pushed out a grand total of eight iOS 8 bug fix updates including its most recent update, iOS 8.3. While a lot of attention has been lavished upon the big changes to the Emoji keyboard, iOS 8.3 also features a ton of bug fixes for linger iOS 8 problems including issues with Wi-Fi, landscape mode and more. And while iOS 8.3 is a crucial bug fixer, it comes with some faults of its own.

Apple adds many new iOS 8.3 features like the Emoji shown above, and dozens of fixes for iOS 8 problems.

Apple adds many new iOS 8.3 features like the Emoji shown above, and dozens of fixes for iOS 8 problems.

iPhone and iPad users are already complaining about a number iOS 8.3 problems. Many users have taken to social media and Apple’s Discussion Forums to complain about initial bugs and issues. Most of these iOS 8.3 problems appear to be isolated but that doesn’t mean that they won’t pick up pace in the future as more people install Apple’s new iOS 8 update.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at some of the more popular iOS 8.3 problems that have popped up over the last 24 hours and some of the problems that have the potential to pop up for iOS 8.3 users in the future. With an iOS 8.4 release date still unconfirmed, iPhone and iPad users will need to rely on third-party fixes for their iOS 8.3 problems.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Installation Problems

Right off the bat, we started to hear about installation problems with the iOS 8.3 update. In fact, we ran into some iOS 8.3 installation problems ourselves. iOS updates often get stuck during the installation process. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix for these issues.

If the iPhone or iPad gets stuck during the iOS 8.3 installation process, users will want to perform a reboot by holding down the power button and home button at the same time for a few seconds until the device restarts. This typically gets the update’s juices flowing again.

If the iOS 8.3 update doesn’t continue automatically, it may simply start over. This method has worked for us, and many other users in the past, so it’s worth a shot if the iOS 8.3 installation falters.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Battery Life Problems

iOS 8.3 battery life problems sprung up immediately after Apple’s release and we continue to see and hear complaints about bad iOS 8.3 battery life. Abnormal battery drain is a common problem after iOS updates.

Gazelle Certified Reviews - iPhone 5 - 9

There are number of ways to try and fix iOS 8.3 battery life if it starts going downhill. We’ve put together an extensive list of fixes for bad iOS 8.3 battery life that iPhone and iPad users will want to take a look at if and when the device starts acting up. iOS battery life problems can occur at any time so those who aren’t experiencing them now will want to keep these fixes in mind just in case.

How to Fix Missing Password Settings

The iOS 8.3 update brings some new features to the table including a way to download free apps from the App Store without needing to punch in a password or use Touch ID. We weren’t able to find the feature in our settings yesterday. Fortunately, there is a simple fix that will users to gain access to this small but important iOS 8.3 feature.

To get the Missing Password settings feature to appear, you’ll first need to go to Settings and then Touch ID & Passcode. From there, flip the iTunes & App Store option toggle off. Once this is done, head into your Settings then into iTunes & App Store. Right below Apple ID will be a feature called Password Settings. This will allow users to toggle the “Require Password” feature off for free app downloads.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Wi-Fi Problems

iOS 8.3 comes with a number of fixes for Wi-Fi problems but we’ve still seen some complaints about broken Wi-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi issues have plagued many users for years and a single thread on Apple’s discussion forums has received well over 600,000 views since September’s iOS 8.0 release.

There are no guaranteed fixes for Wi-Fi issues though there are some things that iOS 8.3 users can try should connectivity start going south. These fixes have been passed down from Apple’s iOS 6, iOS 7 and older iOS 8 updates and they’ve worked for many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users dealing with connectivity problems.

Gazelle Certified Reviews - iPhone 5 - 6

First, iPhone and iPad users can try resetting the device’s network settings. This is an extremely easy process though it could take a couple of minutes to complete. Those experiencing Wi-Fi issues will want to set aside some time to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. To do this, open up the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Users will need the passcode and a few minutes of time because the phone or tablet is going to reboot itself after the process completes. Users will also want to track down commonly used Wi-Fi passwords because this process is going to erase stored Wi-Fi passwords.

If that fix doesn’t work, take a look at some of these other potential Wi-Fi fixes. We also recommend rebooting your router and or modem to see if that dislodges the problem. It’s also worth updating the router’s firmware. This process is going to differ based on make and model so users will need to find the manual or consult the appropriate company’s website.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Cellular Data Problems

We haven’t seen a ton of complaints about cellular data issues but they are among the most common iOS 8 problems and they’re bound to impact some iPhone and iPad users in the days, weeks and months after the iOS 8.3 release.

iPhone and iPad users experiencing iOS 8.3 cellular data problems should first try restarting the device in question. This has worked for us in the past. If that simple fix doesn’t work, try toggling cellular data on and off. This also has also worked for many people before. To do that, Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. It’s a quick process and one that could return things to normal assuming connectivity isn’t down in the area.

Gazelle Certified Reviews - iPhone 5 - 8

If none of that works, try flipping Airplane Mode on, waiting 30 seconds, and then flipping it off. This, like the other fixes, has worked to alleviate cellular data problems in the past. If nothing works, contact Apple or the service provider.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth issues are among the most common iOS problems and we’ve already seen some iPhone and iPad users complain about busted Bluetooth after making the move to iOS 8.3.

iPhone users have singled out iOS’ “Reset All Settings” option as a potential fix for Bluetooth issues. It hasn’t worked for everyone but there are a ton of people that are claiming success after trying it on their iPhone. It could also work for the iPad and iPod touch.

To “Reset All Settings” on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, open up the device and head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This is going to take a bit of time and users will lose all saved settings but the pay off is that it seems to fix at least some Bluetooth problems.

We also recommend resetting Bluetooth in the car if a device is failing to pair with the connection in the car. iPhone and iPad users will need to consult the car manual to do this as the process is going to vary based on make and model. Once Bluetooth is reset, try reconnecting the device to the car.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 App Issues

In the aftermath of the iOS 8.3 release, we’ve begun to hear and see complaints about app performance. This is a common occurrence after a major iOS update like iOS 8.3.

To fix app problems, make sure applications on the iPhone or iPad are updated. Bug fixes and app updates with support for iOS 8 have been trickling out since launch.

Gazelle Certified Reviews - iPhone 5 - 11

iPhone and iPad users who are forgetful or lazy will want to turn on automatic App Store updates because it will keep apps automatically behind the scenes. Auto updates will ensure that they are always on the latest version with the latest bug fixes. To do that, head into Settings > iTunes & App Store > Toggle Updates on.

If that doesn’t work, try reinstalling the application. This has worked for some users in the past. If the app is still acting up, iOS 8.3 users will want to contact the developer of the application and relay the issues. Bringing these bugs to light could prompt developers to start paying attention and actively fix the bug in an upcoming update.

How to Improve iOS 8.3 Performance

We’ve noticed some performance issues on the iPhone 5 and iPad Air and we’re seeing iPhone and iPad users on other devices complain about lag, freezing and other problems.

When Apple’s iOS 8.0 update first came out, we outlined a number of different strategies including reducing animations and pretty effects, resetting settings, or restoring back to factory settings. These fixes still apply today, months after the iOS 8 update’s release. They may not work for everyone but they are certainly worth a shot if performance drags after iOS 8.3 arrives.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Messages Problems

We’ve also started to see complaints about issues with the Messages app. These are common as well, particularly right after the release of a major iOS update.

If Messages is acting up,  the first thing to try is toggling it on off and on. If that doesn’t work, try rebooting the phone or tablet. If neither of those work, it’s time to reset the device’s network settings.

Gazelle Certified Reviews - iPhone 5 - 3

To do that, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The iPad or iPhone will reboot, and while the stored Wi-Fi networks will be lost, reentering a Wi-Fi password is a small price to pay for working Messages.

How to Fix iOS 8.3 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If these fixes for iOS 8.3 problems don’t work, we have a few recommendations. Users can currently downgrade to iOS 8.2 to see if that helps. The downgrade process won’t last forever and Apple will eventually plug it up. It usually takes a couple of weeks though.

If that doesn’t work, take the iPhone or iPad to a Genius Bar at the local Apple Store. They can help diagnose the problem and potentially offer a new device if still under warranty.

Those that can’t or don’t want to take the device to the Apple Store will want to consider performing a factory reset. Factory resets will wipe the device clean, so it’s an option that we recommend only to those that can’t find a temporary or permanent fix.

To do that, choose Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this will wipe everything from the iPhone or iPad, so make a back up before doing this. Again, setting all of this up will be very time consuming, but it may be the fastest way to fix bad iOS 8.3 problems on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

To summarize it: If your device still works – better wait a few more weeks before deciding to update.
BTW, automatic app updates is very often the most stupid thing to do, it’s not that rare that apps lose some beloved functionality or look.

Try charging it if it is dead. If it isn’t, plug it in to iTunes on a Mac/PC and see if it syncs. If it syncs, backup your iPod and take it to Apple. If it doesn’t sync, it is bricked. If it is bricked, take it to Apple or put it in DFU mode and connect it to iTunes. If you don’t know what DFU mode is, Google it.

Your article is probably very helpful to those experiencing the problems you’ve listed. My problem is not posted, which is, yesterday I got a notification saying my storage was almost full (0 bytes available). I have a 128gb 6+ and last I checked I had about 50gb available. Perplexed, I started to delete a few apps, cleared up 2.5gb… 1 hour later, same message, 0 bytes available. I kept deleting a few things here and there but if I add up most of the things I see in “manage storage” it still only adds up to be around 60gb… no where near 128… So if anyone knows how to fix a memory draining ios 8.3, let me know in the comments. I will back up and restore tonight and see if that fixes it.

LOL, I did this at one time too. Found out the message relates to your iCloud “backup” storage. Just delete the oldest backups and you’ll be good. Don’t delete the most recent backup though.

8.3 has an easter egg in it that causes incoming email problems for older apple users. I am on my 2nd I6 and the same probelm wont go away. out bound email works fine – no inbound email. all other apple devices have no problems with same email account. the settings keep changing by them selves. port setting numbers SLL on/off toggles on after being turned off, password un checks itself. I have three email accounts – only one has this problem and these problems are exclusive to the 8.3 software on the I6

I had an issue for weeks after installing 8.3… I had zero cellular ability and iPhone (6) showed “searching” constantly. I tried resetting phone (by power cycling), turning on/off airplane mode several times for hours, turning cellular on/off several times, and doing combinations of all the suggestions. What finally worked was the simplest thing I should have thought of from the start, which was simply resetting “network” settings (settings>general>reset>network settings>passord>confirm….) took about 30-seconds to reset network settings to default, and WALLAH, AT&T LTE showed up immediately after “NETWORK” reset was complete. Only thing left to do was re-enter wifi-passwords! That also resolved my battery issue for whatever reason (maybe searching all the time was a drain on battery?). Anyways, hope this helps someone else out there with cellular network not being found…

I have installed iOS 8.3 on my iPhone 6, I have an issue that when at home and the phone connects to my wifi the phone will not ring or show a missed call, the caller hears the phone connected and ringing, but the phone itself does not ring, take it off wifi and it rings, put it back in to wifi and it does not ring, if you turn the phone on/off it fixes the issue for a while but then you just don’t know if any one is trying to call you, we only found this as I could not find my phone a tried calling it to trace it in the house.

OMG!!! This isn’t a troubleshooting forum, people. This is a comment section about the article.

    Like this:

The article was clearly written by a high schooler. I’m surprised that I can’t notice any direct copy and paste. I mean really!?! What is this shit. Sure, you listed the major issues with 8.3 but then all your “fixes” was simply to close the app or restart the device, or just simply default the settings. I mean…geez…if I wanted to read that I would just call level 1 tech support and have an automated system tell me the same. Oh look…you put links to more developed articles and forums that actually have some tech value.

Please author, stick to TMZ because you are not a technical writer.

When my iPad 2 is on the home screen it works fine, I can swipe to different pages and I can open an app. However, when the app opens, I cannot use it. I try to swipe up and down, left and right, or try to tap something, but it is unresponsive. For example, I opened the Calender app, but I can’t go to the different dates. This goes for all the apps on my iPad 2. I don’t know if I should reboot it because i don’t want to lose my data. I’ve deleted the apps that I installed recently, but it didn’t help. Has this happened to anyone, because I really need to fix this problem. I am literally desperate!

I also had my iPad2 upgraded with the most recent ios software, I lost my email link, that is to say I could ask for email but the screen would go white then blank out to the start-up screen. It was also left there as a ‘ghost’ panel. I got mad and just pointed at, squeezed and generally rubbed the face of the ipad and guess what? the dam email started filtering through, works ok now, give it a try.

8.3 is a disaster! it has set my phone back five years. When is Apple going to fix this mess!!!! I have all of these problems on my phone now and nothing works to get rid of these problems!! We need help and not some canned Apple responce to all these problems. I have wasted about 30 hours of my life trying to fix allthis and after 12 calls to Apple and more time wasted I still have all the same problems. The Iphone 5 i bought two years ago worked just fine until Apples Trojan horse would not let me get internet anymore. Thanks Apple!! Now my phone is just as good as my old Nokia flip phone.

    CONGRATULATIONS, APPLE!
You have just passed up windows as the worst and most frustrating operating system while single-handedly destroying your reputation of rock solid performance.

Not only do you downgrade your “upgrades,” you sink other apps with it….bravo! I guess anything worth doing, is worth doing big….slow mail, crashing web browser, overall performance problems, not “issues.” Let’s call them what they are!
