10 Common iOS 8.4 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

Apple’s new iOS 8.4 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch brings Apple Music and a collection of enhancements and bug fixes for iOS 8 problems. It also appears to be causing problems for some users as complaints about iOS 8.4 problems continue to grow in the hours after the update’s release. With that in mind, we take a look at some of the more common iOS 8.4 problems and offer some potential fixes.

Apple confirmed the iOS 8.4 release all the way back in April with a release into its well known beta program. Weeks later, the company release iOS 8.4 to the public for the first time in the form of a beta update for users in the open Beta Software Update program.

Earlier this week, weeks after WWDC and just hours after a release date announcement, Apple took iOS 8.4 out of beta and released it to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the world. iOS 8.4 and its upgrades are now available to anyone using a device capable of running iOS 8.4.

iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.4 Performance- 1

The iOS 8.4 update brings a lot to the table. While the update’s focus is the new Apple Music platform, it also brings changes to iBooks and some bug fixes for annoying iOS 8 problems. According to some iPhone and iPad users, it also brings trouble along with it.

iOS 8.4 problems have been surfacing since Tuesday and we’ve seen many iPhone and iPad users complain about problems with Apple’s latest update. Today, we want to take a look at the most common iOS 8.4 problems that have and will pop up for iOS 8.4 users.

Apple still hasn’t confirmed an iOS 8.4.1 update and an iOS 9 update won’t be coming until the fall. This means that those dealing with iOS 8.4 problems will need to rely on third-party fixes. Here, we outline some fixes that have worked for us in the past. Try these out if you happen to run into an iOS 8.4 issue on your device.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Installation Problems

[contextly_sidebar id=”10pBDtugW5YtdcKP0iFcRJ7e7RAwAWbM”]Many of the initial complaints about iOS 8.4 have been out installation problems. These are extremely common in the hours and days after an update’s release as people move from an older version iOS or from beta software.

Some iPhone and iPad users say that the iOS 8.4 download process has stopped abruptly on their device. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get the iOS 8.4 download process unstuck.

To jumpstart the iOS 8.4 installation process, you’ll want to hold down the power button and home button for 10 seconds until the device restarts. Once the device reboots, you’ll want to try and download/install the iOS 8.4 update again.

If you are moving from the public iOS 8.4 beta and your iOS 8.4 download keeps getting stuck, you’ll want to head here to learn how to fix it. The process is very similar to the one for regular users though there are a few other steps that you’ll have to take in order to complete the process.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Battery Life Problems

In the days since the iOS 8.4 release, we’ve been hearing a number of complaints about bad iOS 8.4 battery life. And while some of those complaints are coming from Apple Music users, others are coming from iPhone and iPad users who have simply seen an unexplainable drop in overall charge.

iOS battery life problems tend to dissipate after a few days as the software settles down but if they don’t, there are some things you can try.

iPhone-6s-2

Through the years, we’ve come up with some very specific fixes and tips that have helped us and many others get a grip on their battery life. Our extensive list of fixes is a great place to start if you’ve run into strange battery life problems after installing the iOS 8.4 update.

Just remember. iOS battery life problems can emerge at any time so it’s probably worth committing these fixes to memory so that you’re prepared for the future.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 iCloud Music Library Problems

Apple Music users have been running into all sorts of problems after the iOS 8.4 update’s arrival but one of the most common is an iCloud Music Library Can’t be Enabled error.

If you start using Apple Music on your device and you run into this error, know that there is an easy fix. You simply need to enable iCloud Music Library in order to use Apple’s new music platform. Here is how to get rid of this pop up if you encounter it after trying to use Apple Music:

  1. First head into your Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Next, tap on the Music app .
  3. After that, flip iCloud Music Library to On.
  4. Now, choose to Merge or Replace your music library. Both work.
  5. You should be good. If it doesn’t work, try a few more times. It should work eventually.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Wi-Fi Problems

Wi-Fi problems are among the most common smartphone afflictions so it’s not surprising to hear and see complaints about iOS 8.4 Wi-Fi problems in the days after its release.

iOS Wi-Fi problems can be difficult to fix though there are some proven remedies that you’ll want to try if you run into poor connectivity with the iOS 8.4 update.

iPhone-6s-3

The first thing that we recommend is resetting your Network Settings. To do this, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will take a few minutes and it will forget all of your connections so you’ll want to have all of your passwords handy before doing it.

If you don’t want to do that, you can forget each Wi-Fi connection individually. To do that, simply go into Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your connection > Tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen. Then, try reconnecting to see if that kickstarts the connection.

If those quick fixes don’t work, you should try rebooting your router and your modem. Unplug them for a good minute and then plug them back in to see if that alleviates the problems. You might also want to look into updating your router’s firmware. The instructions can probably be found online.

For a few other potential fixes for iOS 8.4 Wi-Fi problems, you can head here.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Cellular Data Problems

Cellular data issue are also extremely common after iOS updates. We’ve seen a few complaints about cellular data in the iOS 8.4 update’s aftermath. Cellular data issues are also extremely hard to fix manually but we’ll outline some fixes that have helped us fix problems in the past.

If you’re sure that the cellular data issues affecting your services (iCloud, Siri, etc) aren’t related to a carrier outage or issue, you’ll first want to restart your iPhone or iPad. Hold down the power button, shut it down, and then reboot to see if that dislodges the problem.

iPhone 6s-5

If a simple restart doesn’t work, the next thing to try is toggling Cellular Data off and then back on again. To do that Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. Toggle it back on to see if that gets things moving again.

If that doesn’t work, try flipping Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds and then turning it off. Airplane Mode will kill all of your connections.

And finally, if you’re not getting a good LTE connection, try shutting down LTE for a few minutes and then turning it back on. To do that, go in Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off. Once you turn it off, you’ll rely on your carrier’s backup network. Wait a little bit and then flip LTE back on to see if service is restored.

If nothing works, contact your carrier.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems always pop up after iOS updates and we’re already seeing users complain about a variety of iOS 8.4 Bluetooth problems.

Fixes for Bluetooth problems are similar to the fixes for Wi-Fi problems. First, you’ll want to try resetting your Network Settings. Again, that’s Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will forget your Bluetooth devices and you’ll need to reconnect.

iPhone 6 Worth It 2015 - 2

If you don’t want to forget everything, you can go into each connection individually and forget the connection. Settings > Bluetooth > Select your connection using the circular blue i tab > Tap Forget this Device.

You can also try resetting all of your settings. This has worked for some iPhone and iPad users in the past. To do that, Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will take a little time to complete.

If you’re dealing with Bluetooth problems in the car, you’ll need to consult your car’s manual because you’ll want to reset the Bluetooth connection in there. Once you’re able to do that, try pairing the device with the car again. In some cases, this has worked to dislodge problems.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 App Problems

We haven’t run into any major app problems after installing iOS 8.4 though we’ve seen complaints about app performance in the hours since the update’s Tuesday release. App hiccups are common after iOS updates.

To try and fix issues with your app, you’ll first want to install the latest bug fixes assuming the update isn’t the one causing the problems in the first place.

If the latest bug fixes don’t work, you can try reinstalling the application on your device. This has worked for us in the past. Simply delete the app and then install it again via the App Store. If that doesn’t work, you’ll want to report the issues to the developer so that it can fix the problem in a future update.

How to Improve iOS 8.4 Performance

If you are noticing lag or UI problems like some iOS 8.4 users are, you’ll want to consult our list of potential fixes for iOS performance problems.

When iOS 8 first came out, we outlined a number of different strategies including reducing animations and pretty effects, resetting settings, or restoring back to factory settings. All of these things still apply nearly a year after the update’s release on iPhone and iPad.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Messages Problems

We’re already seeing complaints about Messages after the iOS 8.4 update. Not surprising because we always see Messages problems after major iOS updates.

If Messages starts acting up, you’ll first want to toggle it off then on again. To do that, go into Settings > Messages > Toggle iMessage off then back on again. That’s helped iron out our issues in the past.

iPhone5s-1

If that doesn’t work, you can try rebooting your device. If that doesn’t work, it’s now time to head into your device’s network settings for a quick reboot.

To accomplish that, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Again, the device will reboot and forget your network connections so make sure you have that information handy.

How to Fix iOS 8.4 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If nothing here works, there are a few more options. First, you can downgrade back to iOS 8.3. You can’t downgrade back to anything older than that and the iOS 8.3 downgrade will probably be open for another week or so.

You can also perform a factory reset and restore from a backup. This will wipe everything on your phone or tablet and return it back to the way it was when you first bought it.

To perform a full on factory reset, Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This is a proven fix for many iOS problems but it’s time consuming so only use it as a last resort.

If you can’t figure it out yourself, you can take your device into an Apple Store. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if they can’t diagnose your problem. Who knows, maybe it’s a bloated battery causing your battery life problems, not iOS 8.4.

10 Important iOS 9 Release Details

Apple Music Coming to iOS 9 Beta

Apple Music Coming to iOS 9 Beta

As it stands, Apple's iOS 9 beta does not support the company's brand new Apple Music platform. That will change very soon as the company's Eddy Cue has confirmed that an upcoming iOS 9 beta release will bring Apple Music support to testers.

Cue says that Apple will seed a brand new iOS 9 beta 3 next week. He did not confirm a specific release date for the new iOS 9 beta only saying that the update would be coming sometime "early next week." Apple is well-known for releasing new updates on Monday so it's possible that we'll see it emerge after the holiday weekend.

Apple Music is the company's brand new platform and it's available to anyone capable of upgrading to iOS 8.4. iPhone and iPad users with a valid Apple ID can take part in a free three month trial of the service before a paid subscription is required.

You guys mighty want to clean out the charger ports on your handsets. they can get clogged up with fluff, which affects the contacts. Weirdly, every time this has happened my phone will charge when turned off, but not when on.

My phone is now a brick. Thank you iOS 8.4. It’s unresponsive to any charger and happened immediately after the update.

    • Jason

      07/04/2015 at 5:35 pm

Well not bricked, but certainly not an intuitive solution – the phone was at 82% and unresponsive to the typical shoulder/home hold to reset. I had to leave it on the charger (that made no indication it was charging) and after 10 minutes it did reset. It’s behaving like the battery level is defaulting to zero regardless of charge.

My phone screen kept going “blue” and now it’s sitting on the charger….. It can’t do anything it just has a black screen I can’t even restart it. Ugh. And I’m going to a concert tomorrow and I can’t take pictures.

just last night my phone died on me and I couldn’t get it to charge, after leaving it plugged in for over three hours it turned on. the battery life is draining fast, I rarely use my phone for texting, mainly apps but it’s dying a lot faster now. I almost thought I had to go and get a new phone!

All of my iTunes playlists have disappeared from my iPad immediately after the 8.4 update.
Is there an easy way to fix this?

    • Tw

      08/14/2015 at 12:49 pm

You have to turn off Apple Music Connect to get back your playlists:

      1. In settings go to General;
      2. Go down to Restrictions (10th item);
      3. Enter your Restrictions password;
      4. Go down to Apple Music Connect (8th item;
      5. Flip the switch to “off”.

If you now open Music you’ll find the AMC tab has been replaced by Playlists and your existing lists should be intact.

After upgrade to 8.4 I can no longer play my music through my XtremeMac Tango TT I bought in January 2015. The Tango TT charges the iPad while docked but the music only plays through the iPad speaker. Powering off and on changes nothing and does not fix this problem.

What happened to being able to listen to random songs instead of just playing song in an album?

    • Kate

      07/07/2015 at 3:30 am

Look in the Music app, in the ‘My Music’ section. Make sure ‘Library’ is tapped on at the top. You should see it have the heading ‘Albums’ with a little arrow beside it under the new recently added section. If you tap on that albums heading you can choose songs. Start playing any song then tap on the little banner at the bottom that says what’s playing and look for the two crossed-over arrows to turn on shuffle. Hope that helps :)

Now the music library doesnt categorize according to the album name. When i search the album name i am able to play it. I double checked with my itunes. No problem there and the album title is a proper one, but doesnt show under the correponding letter in my phone

I hate this update, it’s draining my iPads battery life even with the music app not running, and my iPad is down to 80% from 100% in just 40minutes

  10. Megan

    07/07/2015 at 7:53 pm

I can’t get My Music to allow me to listen to all of the albums by the same artist. Now I have to listen to 1 album at a time. Some artists I will have a few songs from each album and I will usually just play all the songs I have by that artist and now I can’t.

    • Dsmiles

      07/08/2015 at 9:46 pm

I am having the same problem and would love a fix. I often want to shuffle songs from various albums by the same artist and I can no longer do it. Do I now have to create a playlist with all songs by the same artist just to be able to shuffle?! So frustrating.

I HATE the apple music. I want to listen to my music!! The phone no longer connects automatically in my car- I have to fumble for my phone and then try to figure out what the teeny tiny words say in order to turn it on for each song! I used to be able to control song choice and see what is playing on the screen in my car but now, nothing! Cant find my playlists, or shuffle through random songs- MAJOR FAIL- Now, how do you fix that!!

APPLE — Please put 8.3 up again so people can get on with their lives!!!
That would take you 5 minutes. 5 minutes will buy you a LOT of customer loyalty. Do the right thing.

    ====== Reasons why I ask this =============================

My ipad was fine initially after the upgrade. Oh, except that it lost 78% of my contacts that I then had to jigger and jogger and fool around with different sketchy apps to recover. grrr. 4 hours of MY life I will never get back.

Then last night it stopped working. I locked the ipad, and when I tried to unlock it, screen shows “swipe to unlock” in a clear glass kind of “window” that won’t let me swipe and never puts up keypad to enter anything, it wouldn’t unlock. Battery was at 72%. Power off, reset, no change. Now after several more power cycles, ipad won’t even power off and give me a garbage attempt to unlock it.

And Apple took downsigned 8.3. Brava fruit-people. Brah-va.

    Not pleased.
I don’t have time to monkey with this, and lack patience with Apple’s failure to test thoroughly, awful coding and a lack of commitment to customers (taking 8.3 down=lack of commitment to your customers and lack of commitment to your new code)

And apparently I’m not alone. the “genius bar” offered me an appointment IN A WEEK. A week? really?

Please keep assuring yourself that you did a good thing with 8.4. There’s no problem here, despite enough people lined up already that a week is the waiting time.

5 minutes to re-sign 8.3, Apple. Lots of us would tolerate reloading our systems. (stupidly!?)
5 minutes will buy you a LOT of customer loyalty. Do the right thing.

It would take me 5 hours to get 8.3 on the unit, but that’s another story. Rather than wait 7 days and find out I still have a brick. Or until Apple has a fixed version we can apply to our systems.

Its frustrating to see helpers that completely incompetent in giving advice, and all they do is copy/paste solutions they have read on other blogs without really knowing what they are talking, even less having experienced the problem being addressed.
I wish they would stop suggesting DFU (Hold home and sleep button together 10 seconds bla bla bla) as if it was a “new” surprising solution.

No, my ipad stuck on restore error 1 despite DFU, despite no antivirus, no firewall, hosts file clean, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc .

Wiuseguys should stop repeating basic solutiuons that were obviously tried and come with something endorsed by Apple itself or just shut up!

Bottom line: Many devices have fatal error 1 at 60% or so of installation, checking firmware process…STOP SUGGESTING STUPID solutions that were tried and dont work.

After upgrade to 8.4 on iPhone 5, no sound and no cellular data. Reset, reset network, reset to factory settings…toggle this, toggle that, turn on, turn on! Hours on the phone with my carrier so I could do the whole thing over again. Nothing works. A 90 minutes drive to Apple today to see if they have a solution other than purchasing a new phone.

Let’s make a quick recap of my personal ios 8.4 post installation situation:
-Wifi connection hard to establish and to keep alive
    -3G sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t
-Everytime (and i really mean everytime) i need to download something from AppStore (updates included) i need to reboot the phone with an hard reset, otherwise the download “seems” to start but in truth it doesn’t
-Sometime the phone shuts down itself while the battery is still at 20%, telling me that i need to charge it in order to make it start
-Bluetooth is totally useless for it doesn’t reach any bluetooth device (the same devices i’ve always used without any kind of issue before the ios 8.4 updates)
Need go to on? I don’t think

Many thanks Apple for the update, now my 4s it’s quite a piece of metal and glass, like a wall mirror…
Do not think that i will upgrade it to the 6 (or 6s or 7) cause YOU developed the update even for 4s and so YOU must solve the problem

In 2001, after Microsoft Support told me I had to re-install Windows2000 and everything I had on it, I left Microsoft for good and never came back. This time, Apple is doing the same thing. Now leaving Apple for good and going linux all the way. Proprietary doesn’t work, it is self evident. The only model that really works is open-source.

Frankly, how about Apple fix those problems and stop forcing us to upgrade? When PC started to have issues all over the place such as these I switch to Mac, I am glad to switch back to PC if that the way Apple is going to go now. Users should not have to fix anything, we pay too much for our device and mandatory updates forcing us to buy new devices

I’m having problems with the app store. I can only see purchased and update. Featured, Top Charts, and Explore all show a blank screen. This started since the upgrade. Anyone know how to fix this?

This is so annoying. After installing 8.4, my music on my 5S would only show songs recently purchased with the phone, and song titles. All my playlists were gone. I “upgraded” to IOS 8.4.1 and can now see Albums and Artists and Genres, but I still don’t have any playlists except recently purchased. I put some CDs into iTunes on my MacBook Pro, but none of them will sync onto the phone. I’ve turned off Apple Music and it still doesn’t sync my new CDs from the laptop, or show my old playlists. I just want to go back to 8.3 and forget Apple Music exists – I was happy then.

Still does not fix missing artwork since 8.4 upgrade. Only artwork that shows is for songs bought through iTunes, all other artwork (even if it was found by iTunes and downloaded to the album) does not show up. Neither does artwork found and added manually. Plus there is no way to get the carosel view of the albums anymore since 8.3. Both clearly intentional but also massively stupid on the part of Apple.

I hate Apple Music yet am forced to have it on my iPhone and all other devices. The splash screen is stuck and no matter what I do it won’t go away. I can’t see My Music or playlists or anything. None of the options to fix the stuck splash screen apply because I don’t even have the fields in Settings that the options show. My iPad is all screwed up after these stupid forced “upgrades” ruined the perfectly good functionality I enjoyed. I used to love Apple. Now I HATE Apple. It has officially turned into Microsoft, the Evil Empire, because it cares nothing for what I want–Apple now MAKES me take what they force upon me.
