iOS 8 Control Center Issues Frustrate Users

Published

on

iOS 8 hasn’t been without its issues over the past couple of weeks, and now it seems a handful of users are having problems with iOS 8’s Control Center on both the iPhone and iPad.

According to several community forum posts on Apple’s support forums, many users say that they can’t access Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, while other users claim they also can’t get to the Notification Center.

One user describes the issue and says that while he can access the Control Center from the lock screen, he can’t do so while on the home screen or in-app, even when he enables “Access Control Center from Apps” in the Settings.

As far as what devices this problem exists on, it seems like it can happen on any device running iOS 8, as users have claimed it happens on both iPhones and iPads, including older devices like the fourth-generation iPad and even the iPhone 4s, but it’s also been happening on newer devices like the iPhone 6 and iPad Air.

As for how to fix it, some users say that simply restarting their iPhones and iPads will temporarily fix the problem, but it usually comes back after a while. This is definitely temporary fix, and if the problem ever comes back for you, even after you restart your device, it would probably be best to completely wipe your iPhone or iPad. Of course, make sure to back it up first, that way you can restore all of your apps back onto your device.

However, another fix that we’ve seen involves turning off the “Zoom” feature that’s located in the Accessibility menu in the Settings app. A couple of users had this feature turned on randomly, but once they turned it off, they were able to access Control Center just fine.

If that still doesn’t work for you, though, the next best thing would just be to reset to factory settings and see if that works.

iOS 8 has had a rather rough start, with its first minor update causing major problems for iPhone 6 users. In fact, Apple had to pull the iOS 8.0.1 update because it created so many problems for so many users. And while iOS 8.0.2 was released to fix those issues, iOS 8.0.2 presented its own set of problems.

iOS 8.0.1 came with a handful of bug fixes and improvements including fixes for the keyboards, Photo Library, unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS or MMS messages, and much more. Overall, the update seemed to fix a few problems that have plagued users who installed the update on launch day.

However, the minor update created a major problem, with many users reporting that their iPhone 6 could no longer connect to cellular data and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor quit working. We confirmed this ourselves installing iOS 8.0.1 on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on AT&T and Verizon, and we no longer had cell service on either device and Touch ID wouldn’t work either.

Users who experienced these issues noticed that Searching… appeared up in the left-hand corner of the screen in the status bar where the cell signal is usually located. When that appears instead, it means that you don’t have cell service in that particular area. However, even while located in a well-covered cellular area, some users claimed they couldn’t get service after updating to iOS 8.0.1.

Now that iOS 8.1, the major issues have subsided, but this Control Center problem proves that not everything is 100% working, and it’s always crucial to know that software updates are always a risk to install. Even if an update has been thoroughly tested, there are always new bugs that are found, but iOS 8.1 seems to have fixed most of the major issues.

Hi. Thanks for this post. I just started having this problem and Google led me to your post. Because of your post I think it is because of the zoom feature. It appears though if I just activate the feature with triple finger double tap and then deactivate my control center works again! Thanks.

Similar problem, but different symptom. Cannot access control center (swipe up) from any screen, however can access both camera from lock screen (swipe up) and notification center (swipe down).
Now the interesting part – if I remove phone from my Otter Box Defender case, the access to control center by swipe up works fine on lock or home screen! BTW, I do have a Verizon installed screen protector on the phone also.
    Any comments?

I have the same case as tom and I can say I have the same problem. The Otterbox Defender case for the 6 messes with the control center swipe. Maybe it’s because you can’t get your finger to the very bottom of the screen. Oh well. Just going to return it

Thanks for this post, I was having this issue and I also have the tripple tap to zoom enabled. When it’s happening now, zooming in and back out seems to fix it without having to restart. Anyone else who experiences this should report the issue to Apple so they put it on the radar for a fix:

I was browsing the “tips” app today which is very rare of me, I read the tip concerning the zoom button and thought it was pretty cool so I turned it on. After this I noticed that my control panel wasn’t working but I didn’t make the connection, I ignored the problem until later when it started to really annoy me, I googled the problem and found this article. As soon as I turned off zoom my control panel worked again. I really hope Apple fixes the issue becuase I was looking forward to using the zoom feature. thank you for the help!
P.s my current iOS is 8.1.3

Turning off the Zoom function helped restoring swipe up action.

I would just turn on the assistive touch if nothing works. You click on it and you will be able to access Notification Center and Control Centre.
