iOS 8: What Devices Will Get the New Update

The iOS 8 will be heading to a number of devices this fall including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5 and one device that many thought would be left behind on iOS 7.

Today at WWDC 2014, Apple finally debuted its long awaited iOS 8 update for iPhone and iPad. The update, which had been rumored for quite some time, was shown off in detail on stage through a series of announcements and demos. The iOS 8 update, which features a number of new features, will be coming out sometime this fall. And when it arrives, it’s going to be available for a number of devices.

The iOS 8 update is heading to all iOS 7 devices except for the iPhone 4.

The iOS 8 update is now available for paying developers but the iOS 8 release to the public will not emerge until sometime in the fall. Fortunately, the wait won’t be too suspenseful for iPhone and iPad owners. That’s because Apple announced which devices will and will not be getting iOS 8 later on this year.

An iOS 8 release will arrive, later this year, for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 4s, iPod touch fifth-gen, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad mini, iPad 4, and iPad 3. The addition of the iPad 2 is notable given that the device has received three major iOS software updates. Apple typically pulls the cord after three updates.

Verizon VoLTE is coming in 2014 and may come to the iPhone 5s with an iOS 8 update later this year.

Left off the list is the iPhone 4, a device that is no longer sold in stores and a device that has already received three major updates from Apple. The iPhone 4 is the only iOS 7-powered device that will not be getting the iOS 8 update when it arrives later on this year.

iOS 8 is widely expected to debut with the iPhone 6, Apple’s rumored iPhone, and an iPhone that is rumored for a release this fall. iPhone 6 release date rumors all point to an arrival in the month of September. If true, the iOS 8 release would likely fall in September as well given Apple’s penchant for releasing new iOS software early for older devices.

iOS 8 will be a free update for iPhone and iPad owners though it’s not clear if iOS 8 updates will be created equal. Apple typically offers watered down versions of its software for its older devices. The iPhone 6 though should come with a full iOS 8 feature set.
