iOS 8 Update Storage Problems Frustrate Users

Published

on

The iOS 8 release is here though many iPhone and iPad users are unable to install the new update due to iOS 8 storage problems that require up 5GB to 7GB of free space to install the new software Over-the-Air.

Earlier this month, Apple confirmed a number of new products for arrival including a new Apple Watch, two new iPhones in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the iOS 8 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 8 was originally confirmed at WWDC 2014 though at the time, Apple declined to get into specifics about its release date. At the iPhone 6 launch, Apple revealed a September 19th iOS 8 release date and today, the company made good on its promise.

Apple’s iOS 8 update is now available for iPhone and iPad users though many users are unable to install the iOS 8 update due to the amount of space that the iOS 8 requires. Those trying to install the iOS 8 update Over-the-Air thru Settings will need close to 4.6GB or more of free space available in order to get the download process moving in the right direction.

This is much bigger than past iOS updates and it’s a cause for concern for those without iTunes and for those with limited amount of storage on their iPhone or iPad. These issues likely are going to be a problem for iPhone and iPad users touting larger storage models. However, those with 16GB iPhones or iPads will likely need to free up a ton of space to push the iOS 8 installation process ahead.

The iOS 8 update for the iPhone 5 requires 4.6GB of space though the amount of storage needed for the iPad Air iOS 8 update is far more drastic. Those looking to install iOS 8 on the iPad Air Over-the-Air need 6.9GB of free space in order to install iOS 8 on board their tablet. That’s almost half the amount of internal storage on board the 16GB iPad Air.

Before deleting precious photos, apps and other files, iPhone and iPad users running into iOS 8 storage problems will want to consider installing the iOS 8 update with iTunes. iTunes does not require any free space to install though the process is far more inconvenient.

Those that cannot use iTunes will need to go to Settings -> General -> Usage to see which apps or videos are taking up the most space on the iPhone or iPad. This will allow you to delete the biggest apps for a faster iOS 8 upgrade, instead of hunting and deleting apps, music, and other files on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

It appears that iPad and iPhone users are running into other iOS 8 problems as well. iTunes is delivering server errors to those trying to install the iOS 8 update through that method and those trying to check for the update manually through the update’s settings are getting server errors as well. Errors in the minutes after an iOS release are common and they tend to dissipate in the hours after the initial release.

iOS 8 is not as ambitious as last year’s iOS 7 update but it’s a large update nonetheless. Apple’s new software for iPhone and iPad comes with a number of new features including improvements to Photos, iMessaging, FaceTime Audio and more. The update is free and it’s available to iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch fifth-gen users.

The update is not going to be available to users on the iPhone 4 who must remain on the company’s iOS 7.1 update from earlier this year.

It is very frustrating! I’m on my second install attempt and I’ve had to delete over 3GB of data, pictures, apps, etc to install a stupid update!! Really Apple! Now I know why the iPhone 6Plus has 128GB of storage… So you can download future updates!!! You would think that Apple could figure this out ahead of time! If the update isn’t ready yet, then DON’T release it! It’s almost enough frustration to go out and purchase an Android device. Less headache when it come to new releases of the operating system. My one and only beef with Apple, figure out how to make the upgrade process easier. We are not all Developers using your products! Unbelievable!!!

After download and install of 8.0 on iPad4, I’m unable to connect to wifi. Or at least it tells me that I’m not connected. I cannot access iCloud, photos, etc. It tells me my password is wrong as well.

Please review this seriously in order to guarantee the trust for all the hardcore Apple fans otherwise all will turn to Andriods instead that are well organised for their new products launching.

So, if I’m not a expert in downloading iOS from iTunes, then I still have a problem. How do I do that? I have an iPhone5.
