iOS 9 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

In September, Apple’s rolled out three iOS 9 updates: iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2. And while these updates bring features and fixes to iPhone and iPad, they’ve also brought problems. Here’s what you need to know about these iOS 9 problems.

In early September, Apple confirmed its iOS 9 release date for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Right on cue, the company has delivered the iOS 9 update in all of its splendor and it’s now available for iOS users in the United States and around the world.

iOS 9 looks a lot like iOS 8 but don’t let its appearance fool you. The iOS 9 update comes loaded with tons of new features. It also brings problems. So does Apple’s brand new iOS 9.0.2 update.

Many users see the iOS 9 software update failed error.

Many users see the iOS 9 software update failed error.

While the iOS 9 update went through a lengthy beta process, the iOS 9 update is a big system upgrade and big system upgrades typically come with a collection of issues. So do smaller updates like the company’s small iOS 9.0.2 bug fix update.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rxBf1zrEk7m05wr7Q6OipMzy5QNKuP7Y”]

We’re only a few days removed from the iOS 9.0 release and a few hours removed from the iOS 9.0.2 release and we’re already hearing about some of the initial issues plaguing users.

With iOS 9.0.2 problems starting to emerge, we want to take a look at everything you need to know about iOS 9 issues today, tomorrow and in the weeks ahead.

This early roundup offers a look at the issues themselves and some steps to take if you do happen to run into iOS 9 problems on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

iOS 9.0.2 Problems Plaguing Users

The iOS 9 update is packed with new features but it’s also causing problems for some iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.

The earliest iOS 9 problems were related to the iOS 9 download. The iOS 9 download failed for many users right at the initial release time forcing many users to install through iTunes. Those issues appear to have resolved themselves and you should now be able to download iOS 9 Over-the-Air through Settings without any problems.

We’ve also been seeing complaints about iOS 9 downloads getting stuck. This is a common issue with iOS upgrades and fortunately a quick reboot (hold down the home button and power button together until the device restarts) should alleviate those problems.

Apple’s iOS 9.0.1 update should help prevent many future iOS installation issues from happening thanks to a fix for the setup assistant. Apple’s new iOS 9.0.2 update is a bug fix update but it also comes with some iOS 9 problems of its own which we’ve outlined in an update here.

iOS-9-6

We expect the list of iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2 problems to grow as the hours and days go on. The iOS 9.0.2 update is only a day old right now. There’s plenty of time for feedback to emerge.

Now, it’s important to note that we’re not pointing these out to nitpick. We’re pointing them out to generate discussion (fixes typically come from discussion) and to serve as a warning.

Remember, Apple never forces you to install iOS updates. Take your time with iOS 9.0.2 and install it when you’re ready. That could be later today or that could be later this month after the smoke has settled. It’s not going anywhere.

They’re Isolated

It’s important to note that as of right now, iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1, iOS 9.0.2 problems are isolated. It’s also important to note that we haven’t seen widespread complaints about the issues that normally plague Apple’s iOS updates.

There are iOS 9 and iOS 9.0.2 problems, we’ve established this, but none of them (for the moment) appear to be widespread. Typically, major widespread problems affecting millions jump off the page but other than those initial download problems, we haven’t seen any.

We’ve been using iOS 9 on an assortment of devices (iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPad Air, and iPad mini 2) and we haven’t run into any major problems or bugs in iOS 9. At least not yet.

iPad-iOS-8.4-9

We also haven’t seen too many complaints about bad iOS 9 battery life, major performance issues on older devices, or connectivity problems. These are extremely common after major iOS updates.

The iOS 9 update is only a few days old and we’re bound to see some of these issues emerge but this lack of volume is a great sign.

Again, it’s important to gather as much feedback as possible before installing major iOS updates. Complaints about iOS 9 will be loud and gain attention but it’s important to note the success stories as well.

How to Fix iOS 9 Problems

If you just downloaded iOS 9 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and you’re already seeing problems, there’s no need to work yourself into a panic. At least not yet.

We’ve put together a list of fixes for common iOS 9 problems that should help. These fixes include ways to improve iOS 9 battery life, fix poor Wi-Fi connectivity, and more. It’s a great starting point though we encourage you to branch out to other sites if these fixes don’t work or you don’t find your problem.

iOS-9 11.05.48 AM

Apple’s Discussion Forums are always a great place to look for fixes for iOS 9 problems. We’re already seeing users provide feedback there and that should continue for the foreseeable future. We’ve also found the MacRumors community to be a great resource so you’ll want to check there too.

You Can Still Downgrade to iOS 9.0.1

For the moment, you have another option at your fingertips. If iOS 9.0.2 isn’t performing on your iPhone or iPad, you can downgrade to iOS 9.0.1

Apple is no longer signing on iOS 9.0 or iOS 8.4.1. The company typically signs off for a week or two before pulling the cord so this was to be expected. For now, you can still downgrade to Apple’s iOS 9.0.1 upgrade.

We’ve put together a step-by-step guide that will take you through the iOS 9.0.2 to iOS 9.0.1 downgrade process.

What’s Next

Apple hasn’t announced an iOS 9.0.3 update. And with no hero level iOS 9 problems jumping out at users, we may not see one for a few days, a few weeks, or ever. So, you’ll need to be extremely proactive if you do run into problems.

We do know that Apple has another iOS 9 update on the way. iOS 9.1 will be coming to all iOS 9 devices sometime in the next few weeks. We don’t have an official date but it looks like it will push in late October or November alongside the iPad Pro.

iOS 9.1 will bring new emojis but it should also bring bug fixes and security enhancements to the iOS 9 operating system.

Downloaded iOS 9 but didn’t upgrade Notes. Now I want to but don’t know how

Go back to the home screen of notes (hit the back arrow all the way back) and you will see a continue button on the top right corner.

Help me, please. I assumed that Apple would be super-careful with the 1830+ Notes that I had entered from the last 3 years or so. So…I upgraded to OS 9 without backing up my iPod Touch (a very bad idea). (Also, I did not have iCloud on). OK so far, but now my Notes were hard to get around in and read. Then OS 9 wanted to “convert” my Note files to a better format, so I let it. NOW ALL MY 1830 NOTE FILES ARE GONE. I think they are still on my iPod Touch 5g., but–how do I find them now?

It was an iPhone 6 I was using. However, a full restore sorted it.

      09/17/2015 at 7:39 pm

      Try these solutions:
      1. Try restarting your iPhone: shut it down and reboot it.
      2. Turn Cellular Data off and then back on again: Settings > Cellular > Toggle Off > Toggle On again.
Try flipping Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds: Open Control Center > Tap on the Airplane icon > After 30 seconds, turn it off again.
      3. Try reset your iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. You won’t lose any content this way.
Hope it works for you :-)

same with my iPhone 5c man

    • Tabot

      09/18/2015 at 12:52 am

Same with my iPad Air it’s brickEd. A hard restart does nothing and nothing else is possible to do with it because it can’t be connected to iTunes. The nearest Apple store is over 300 miles away. I don’t know if I will ever be able to use it again.

Join the club…my iPad is a brick since I downloaded iOS9. All I get is a junky looking white page with the code buttons so big they run off the page, running horizontal instead of vertical. Tried to shut it down, didn’t work.

My iPad Air is stuck in the loading page with the progress bar as if I was downloading a new update ever since I downloaded iOS 9, I haven’t been able to do anything with my iPad. It keeps reloading/crashing/restarting. Can someone tell me how to fix?

    • Rhonda

      09/23/2015 at 7:27 pm

I have the same problem. My ipad was working for the first day after the download just fine, then it started having interruptions of the Apple loading page but didn’t last long. Today when I opened my ipad, the screen went black and the loading page came up, and down, and up….. nothing would work, couldn’t shut it off, even the restart process wouldn’t work. It has now been 5 hours and I finally got it to shut down. I’ll see what happens in the morning – I am also going to drain my battery overnight to see if that helps.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I’m all ears.

Bill Gates must be writing this software for Apple. With Microsoft he writes bad Windows software so you by the next OS version hoping that will fix the problem. Only with this if it bricks your iPad or iPhone you have to buy a new one!

      09/18/2015 at 10:17 am

Whatever you do, DO NOT UPGRADE TO 9.1. This is what was released to the public. I’m a beta tester, have had this version for about four days, and am still fixing my phone. DO NOT UPGRADE!!! What I don’t understand is that iOS 9.0 was next to flawless; beautiful. I don’t know what they did in this latest version. I’ve lost contacts, had to reset my Apple Watch because the Bluetooth wouldn’t connect, and a host of other technical issues. They would have been better releasing the original beta version.

Ya Apple says the smartest iOS yet?? Don’t think so it’s the stupidest yet my update went good all you that it failed don’t loose any sleep over it!!!! It’s ugly the wallpapers are discusting!! Bird feathers?? Seriously?? And what’s the hype??? I see very few new features and what is, is nothing of interest!! Luckily I still had my ISPW iOS 8.4.1 and lucky successful downgraded back!! That’s was smartest yet!! iOS 9 sucks!!! Nothing to worry about there wouldbe upgraders but good luck keep trying but like I said its nothing impressive at all but that’s my opinion!! Just a few big glitches you upgraders will have is battery life is bad, wifi issues, email issues, and delayed voicemails hours and days late and same with texting that’s just a few I tossed out there!! If you succeed you know what can happen but hopefully not!!

My grandson updated and said it took like 8 hours and now it wants his Apple ID and password. Every time it says incorrect. He has entered this many times previous so he knows he’s entering correct info.
    Any suggestions?

      09/19/2015 at 8:36 pm

My friend had the same issue what he did was sign out completely out Apple ID than log in and than for some reason it worked for him, funny thing I did my update 9 am the 16th California time, but in my other post… Sorry it was so negative I did not like iOS 9 so I put my iPhone in recovery mode and poped my old ISPW file iOS 8.4.1 and downgraded iOS 9 had a lot of issues on my 6 plus 128 gb just be careful Apple needs to fix this!!!!!!!! I was so furious how bad it was now my iPhone back on 8.4.1 works perfectly maybe it’s a random fluke thing to me not others but have read and googled and called Apple support and said was verified issues on iOS 9 and iOS 9.1 is in the works in October, till than I’m holding out away from iOS 9.0 for now, but give it a try and good luck!! Hate to see your grandson go through the same as I did, my friend even went back to 8.4.1 iOS due to similar issues, but give a try Apple won’t sign off ISPW iOS 8.4.1 till after launch of new iPhone so time is short!!! Give a try if no luck wait till 9.1 in October like I am!!

Must agree with last post #Taglarry, downloaded IOS 9 on my iPh6 and after 2 days restored to 8.4.1. My issues #1 battery drain!!! My #2 issue was with lag, not terrible but needs addressing. It would appear whatever IOS 5-9 comes with your device initially will be the best performing on the device.

    • #taglarryios9sucks

      09/20/2015 at 12:22 pm

Thanks bill ya it’s true, too many issues I apologize for the negative post to all!! But iOS 9 is BAD!! Apple FAILED this year and all the revenue and technology you would think this wouldn’t happen?? guess what I went to Apple Store and they admit preorder sales are down from past years… Gee I wonder why??

Having issues after ios 9 update, my airdrop from from iphone 6 to macbook does work? any solutions would be great

    thanks

I upgraded to IOS 9.0.2 and two things happened: Airdrop is nowhere to be found on my iPhone. And I can’t do something as simple as transfer photos from my iPhone to my laptop via USB. My laptop sees the files, but assigns them an JPG icon, and then I get the same error message for every file: unrecognizable file format. These are photos I took on the iPhone, which have always transferred easily.

Found a Fix for the missing contact in messages, and its to do with the settings on the phone sending the message. Since upgrading to ios9 (any version of) one number would not show the contact name when a message received. By setting the phone number in ‘My Info’ on the originating phone sorted it.

Before I downgraded that happened to me on iOS 9 all you have to do is re sync to computer if a Mac Mac book than reopen than you should be able to use email but yahoo only good luck

        09/25/2015 at 1:29 pm

      • Kay

        09/25/2015 at 1:27 pm

OK! I got it fixed on both my iPhone and iPad! I had to delete my account and then add the account back manually! You can’t use “YAHOO” button to add it, as it adds your hosting account. I needed my domain name email account. If this is your problem, you might want to try that!
It is also burning up my battery, but I haven’t had time to worry about that….until now!! Good luck!!!

I removed several of the Productivity app’s that were downloaded with OS9 to my iPhone, now I’m thinking I might like to try the “Numbers” app is there any way of getting it back?

Updated my Ipad yesterday and since then every initial letter I type repeats. I am spending a lot of time deleting extra letters. I have rebooted (soft & hard) the ipad several times which resolves the issue until the power turns off – then it’s back to square peg one :(

Hi – since I uploaded to ios9 im regularly going into open my text messages and where the box is usually blank to start typing a new message there is like a voice message covering the blank space – no matter which contact I try to go into the send a new message. The only way to get rid of it is to reboot the iphone (6). Painful. Is there a solution for this?

    • JET

      09/21/2015 at 5:53 pm

I have this too Marg. If you hit the space bar several times, you can at least see the message you are typing, as it forces that voice message cover upwards, but still rebooting is the only clean fix I’ve found.

      • JET

        09/21/2015 at 5:54 pm

        * Sorry, not the space bar. Hit the return several times to clear the text bar space so you can see what you type.

      10/01/2015 at 7:06 am

Same problem, although I found you don’t have to reboot the iphone. If you just close the message app (double click the home button and swipe up to close “Messages”), it will clear the bar from the text box. Hope it works!

My iphone 4s is stuck in a boot loop that goes to the apple logo with a loading bar thats always at 30%!! the weird thing is it had finished upgrading and I got to my icloud option and then it reset and started doing this anyone know what to do? Ive reset it several times!!1

    09/23/2015 at 9:20 am

Since I installed iOS9 on my iPhone 4s my notes are all compacted. They used to be nicely lined up for easy reading; now each note shows as a single large mass. I sync with Outlook and do not use iCloud. Furthermore, there is no reference on iTunes any more to sync Notes with Outlook. What is happening? My iPhone synced fine before.

This could have been a helpful article had I been able to get through it. I understand a word count can be important, but repeating the same point 2-3 times before getting to the meat and potatoes of why we’re all here, is taking your audience for granted. There are other webpages with similar entries. Why do I need to be told 3 times that there are many positives about the new upgrade, but also many found issues? I got it the first time. Sadly, that’s just one example. Filler is not a sign of good writing, and assumes a certain level intelligence of your readers. We notice!

    09/23/2015 at 11:12 am

Here’s a problem I haven’t seen anybody write about regarding the OS9.0.1 update on my iphone 6. For the last few days my phone wouldn’t come on after charging, intermittenty, unless I rebooted.

Today, with the phone on, off charge, and not low on battery use, just sitting there, the screen went haywire. The phone shut off and on, off and on, and when it was on, the screen was showing black and white lines and static. I rebooted several times and still the same problem. I was able to turn it off and it would stay off, but if I tried to turn it back on, the screen would do the same weird thing. I wasn’t able to get past that.

The phone felt a little hot, but not too hot. I took it out of its case and let it sit for about an hour. Now it’s working ok–for now.

Any idea what might be going on? Could it be unrelated to the OS9.01 update?.

The latest upadte has rendered my iPad nearly worthless. E-mail is not saved, in drafts, or when simply leaving the e-mail app to find a photo or a file. Text is lost, shortly after writing it, if you leave the app a short time after writing it…. There is more, but the e-mail app is an important part of my business, and these glitches are maddening, and costing me money. My nearly $1000. iPad is now sitting on the sidelines, and I fear any future updates.

9.1 horrible seriously I can’t even make calls or keep them when they do go through. Dropping and call failures all day since update. I still can’t turn cellular toggle back on after it’s been off so only wifi usage still with those apps. I’m disgusted that iPhone 6 Plus isn’t working with these new updates like stated.

After the update my 5c to iOS 9, my voicemail is offline. I tried to reset the password, but a message pops up saying that I can’t update at this time. I rebooted, to no avail. I also cannot get my iPhone to regain the ability to text someone that I was previously able to text. I can receive her texts, but I can’t reply. I’ve tried all kinds of things to solve the texting issue, except blowing away all of my other texts and I don’t want to do that. What’s with these two issues?

IOS 9 installation causes many emails to say message is not downloaded from the server. All you see is who it’s from and subject. They will not download! When is the fix for this coming because it’s not in the details of 9.1

Since upgrading to IOS 9 then IOS 9.1, my songs won’t play in my iTunes library, my iPhone 6 won’t back up to iCloud and I also have some WIFI issues. My local Apple Store couldn’t help me and have now appointments for over a week. I have had iPhones forever, but this is tempting me to try another brand, something which was once unthinkable. Totally angry and fed up.

Since updating to the 9.0.1, my photos have added 2 unnecessary albums. Its bullshit! if I try to delete the pictures from the ‘snapshot’ or ‘selfie’ album they automatically delete from my main album. there is nothing in the settings program to be able to shut them off. it is a rip off because it is pretty much doubling up my storage by doubling up the pictures!

I have another issue on two iPad Air MD788LL/A tablets. I contacted Apple and they blew off the issue. Hopefully they will see this and finally fix it.

I upgraded to version 9.0.0 — no problems. I upgraded to version 9.0.1 — no problems. About five nights ago, I got the message that 9.0.2 was available and had some bug fixes, so I decided to install it. That was a mistake!

The tablet had 75% battery remaining when I started the upgrade. The upgrade only took 5 minutes, but when it turned back on it said that the battery was at 0%. Since it thinks that it has 0% battery life, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do not work. Everything else is working correctly. I left it charge over night — no change, still 0%. So, I decided to see how long it would run at 0%. It ran for almost three days of normal use before I finally decided to charge it since I don’t really know how much battery there is.

This is like a car where the fuel gauge does not work… you have to guess.

I contacted Apple and they immediately said that it was due to apps that are installed on the tablet. They said that I would have to restore it. So, I put it in recovery mode, plugged it into the computer, and iTunes performed the restore. It worked fine for about ten minutes. The battery was at 84% and working great. Then, the entire screen went a pinkish / purplish color and then the tablet restarted. This time, when it came up, the battery was again at 0% and I cannot use Wi-Fi.

I should also mention that the iCloud backup was configured, but when I tried to restore it said that there was not a valid backup. When I logged in to the iCloud site, it shows that this tablet has over 5 GB of backup.

Apple, I am seriously considering going back to my Android tablet. This thing does me no good if I cannot use it. Right now, it is a very expensive paperweight.

After upgrade to ios9 when using mail, drafts do not retain content after closing ie after saving an email in draft the content is totally empty including subject and email details. I thought it was isolated to my iPad but a number of others have this problem. Any ideas on rectifying. Power drain is drastic and have undertaken all your suggestions but still poor retention of power. Very disappointing update.
