iPad 2: Apps and Accessories to Replace Your Notebook or Netbook

Published

on

When it comes to going mobile, the iPad and iPad 2 are a lot slimmer than many notebooks and netbooks, which has led to a growing number of users turning to the iPad to replace their notebook as the go to mobile device.

Over at Notebooks.com we are still pretty tied to the benefits of the notebook, but in order to help out users who desire to be more mobile we’ve rounded up the apps and accessories needed to help you use your iPad as a notebook replacement.

The first goal was to provide a feel of the notebook and deliver a workspace that is a little more ergonomic than sitting your iPad or iPad 2 on the table. We rounded up seven iPad accessories you need to have if you want to replace a notebook with your iPad 2. Some of these will be more useful at home, while others will be a must have for hitting the road.

Unfortunately we haven’t found an accessory that gets around the requirement that you plug your iPad into a computer from time to time.

Just like Specs aren’t everything, neither are the iPad accessories. We also put together a list of iPad Apps that help you use your iPad like a notebook. From using LogMeIn to get to a PC when needed to relying on apps like Dropbox and Evernote to keep your files and notes backed up to the cloud we have you covered. We even share one of our favorite apps that lets you type in a document and view a webpage side by side on the iPad which will be a huge help if you plug your iPad 2 into a monitor with the HDMI adapter.

What do you think, is it possible to replace a notebook with the iPad?

It’s possible there exists an alternate universe in which I’d actually replace my laptop (home) or Tablet PC (work) with an iWhatever device of any kind. It is not, however, possible in THIS reality. If it really is the way of our technological future, I’d sooner become Amish.

I already replaced my notebook with my iPad and getting the iPad 2 will cement that transition even more. My previous desktop computer became a media server, my notebook became my desktop, and my iPad goes with me *everywhere*. Having the spec boost of the new one simply makes it easier to do the things I previously used my notebook to do. Typing on it isn’t an entirely enjoyable experience, which is why I have the iCapsule from Rocketfish. A good protective case with a built in bluetooth keyboard. Most people don’t even know it’s an iPad until I start poking at the screen when it’s mounted inside the case.

I like the iPad. But if you regularly carry it around with a keyboard, then why not just get a MacBook Air? It seems to me the way to go would be to leave the keyboard back at the desk.

Price…you can purchase the Ipad 2 and bluetooth keyboard case plus apps for less than the base price for a MacBook Air

Yeah I can see why people would want to have the keyboard for it. The best thing you can get for you iPad is the DISH Remote Access app from DISH Network. I work at DISH and with this app and a Sling Adapter or Slingloaded VIP 922, you can stream live content anywhere you have access to 3g or wifi. It is great for the sports fan who travels a lot and doesn’t want to miss any of your teams games.

With better performance than the original, and the front & back cameras on-board, this opens up a whole lot of opportunities for new apps.
