iPad mini 2 Release Date in Oct. with Massive Shortages Claim Insiders

The iPad mini 2 release date is on track for October complete with a Retina Display that boosts the resolution of the iPad mini’s smaller 7.9-inch display.

Apple is allegedly planning a special iPad event on October 15th when we should see an iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 announcement, as well as a possibility for new MacBook Pro models and OS X Mavericks.

While most leaks point to an iPad mini 2 release this fall, the Retina Display is a source of disagreement. Apple uses a higher resolution Retina Display on the iPad 4 and likely on the iPad 5, which delivers better looking photos, videos and text thanks to pixels packed so close together users can not see the individual pixels.

The latest information suggests the iPad mini 2 will make use of a Retina Display, but it could come with delays and trouble finding an iPad mini 2 in stock well into 2014, similar to the iMac launch in late 2012.

The iPad mini 2 release date, complete with a Retina Display could arrive in 2013 as Apple pushes to compete with the new Nexus 7.

Reuters reports that Apple supply chain sources confirm the iPad mini 2 release date is planned for October with a Retina Display. According to the sources Apple is struggling to meet demand for the iPad mini 2 Retina Display thanks to stringent power usage guidelines which Apple requires to deliver an iPad mini 2 that can match or beat the long battery life of the iPad mini on the market now.

Sharp, LG Display and Samsung reportedly offered Retina Display panels for the iPad mini 2, but Apple refused these solutions due to power demands of the display.

Reuters report reflects the confusing guessing game that is interpreting Apple’s Supply Chain. Sources point to an iPad mini 2 release date with the Retina Display in October with shortages, but later suggest Apple could hold the launch until 2014 when display panels are more plentiful.

If Apple skips the iPad mini 2 release in October, the company runs the risk of losing out on holiday sales to the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HDX and the rumored Nexus 10, all of which use or are expected to use a higher resolution display at a variety of prices. Apple launched the iPad mini last October in time for a blockbuster holiday sales period that included  22.9 million iPad sales, an increase of 15.9 million from the previous holiday sales in 2011.

Another rumor from the Reuters sources point to a cheaper iPad mini with 8GB of memory. Apple uses a similar strategy with the iPhone line to cut the cost of the cheapest iPhone down to $0 on contract. Don’t expect a free iPad mini, but this could be Apple’s way of competing with the $229 small tablet competitors. The iPad mini currently starts at $329 for a 16GB model.

The iPad mini 2 may come in space gray, silver and gold options according to leaks. Reports indicate the iPad mini 2 could use the same 64-bit A7 processor that arrived in the iPhone 5s, delivering a significant performance boost and could include a Touch ID sensor for unlocking the device.
