iPhone 5 4G HSPA+ Support Confirmed by China Telecom?

Published

on

We are fairly certain that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 will not include 4G LTE support. There are just too many reasons why Apple would want to opt to wait until next year to release an iPhone with that kind of support. However, there is another 4G option in the form of HSPA+ (21mpbs), and it seems China Telecom’s vice president has confirmed that the next iPhone will indeed have support for it.

The statements were made during this weeks MacWorld Asia and were apparently made by vice president Huan Wenliang, this according to Macotakara.

As you can see in the slide, China Telecom seems to think that the upcoming iPhone 5 will have HSPA+ support which means that AT&T would have a distinct advantage over the other two carriers that should be getting the next iPhone.

AT&T has an HSPA+ network in place while Sprint and Verizon do not. Sprint has a 4G WiMax network and Verizon’s 4G network is LTE. And while AT&T has labeled its HSPA+ network as 4G, it’s really in between 3G and LTE as far as data speeds are concerned.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced at Apple’s ‘talk iPhone’ event that is scheduled to take place on October 4th, with a release date pegged for sometime in the middle part of the month.

Are iPhone users all that interested in specs?  Most of the iPhone users I know are women and as long as they can make their iPhone look cute, it fits nicely into their purses, gets good reception so they can talk,  text on it, take pics with it and listen to music they are pretty happy.  I lost track of how many times I’ve heard people say that they got iPhones because their kids told them to get one.  If someone is content with the network they are on and other family members are on with them, I can’t see them jumping ship.

Spoken like a true sexist. But hey, you carry a man-purse so you can have one too.

Wow, umm your a dork. Most iPhone users are interested in specs. That’s why everyone is guessing at them online. I’m a guy with an iPhone, I love it getting an iPhone 5. So why do you talk out your butt?

any way you cut it, apple launched this market.  android is clunky and requires all sorts of hacking, just to get the most basic usability.  ios5 is looking pretty great and I do care about specs and guess what?  I am not a woman or a teenager.

    ps. how were the 50’s?

I don’t understand what you are talking about hacking. I have my galaxy S on stock Froyo and have no problems with usability. I know Apple has a better support and application base but I think most people don’t care about that on a phone (may be for a computer or tablet). Why people spend more money on a iPhone is beyond me. The experience on Android is the same for most people. I lost count of how many times I had to explain people I don’t have an iPhone. Perhaps it’s just brand power.

Only 21mbps capability, sad. HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung Galaxy 2 are both 42 Mbps phones being released on TMO. So the Apple can so is 21mbps?

yes, but the advantage to having an iphone is that the operating system uses much less memory than android does. this coming from an ex-android user, iphone is much faster when it comes down to it. a good friend of mine recently switched from an android to an iphone 3GS and he absolutely loves it. he said it is the best phone he has ever had.

I’m a wireless sales rep & computer nerd lol I deal with a lot of smartphones, and the iPhone by far is the best phone out there. The iPhone was the 1st, like the Mac computer. It is and will always be ahead of it’s time. All my android phones and all the computers me and my family ever had are crap compared to apple products.
