iPhone 6 Release Date: What We Know So Far

Published

on

When is the new iPhone release date? It’s a question that we get asked every year around this time as WWDC approaches and iPhone rumors begin to heat up. The next iPhone appears to be the iPhone 6 and here, we try to answer that question as best we can by looking at everything we know about the iPhone 6 release date.

With the iPhone 6 rumor mill spinning at an incredible pace, we’re starting to get a lot of questions from friends interested in an upgrade, from family members looking to make the switch to a larger iPhone, and from readers who are curious about all of the iPhone 6’s features both big and small.

The iPhone 6 itself hasn’t emerged just yet but thanks to rumors, leaks and Apple’s predictability, we’re able to paint an early picture and help set expectations of those looking to pick up Apple’s brand new iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 features

iPhone 6 rumors suggest that the device will come in two large screen sizes, 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. Those two screens will supposedly carry better resolution than the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5. Rumors point to an upgraded camera with image stabilization technology and a new A8 64-bit processor. They point to a redesign that could see Apple thin out the bezels and shift some buttons in an effort to keep the iPhone 6 slim. And finally, they point to the new iPhone release date.

Once rumors start to fly like they have with the iPhone 6, we get inundated with questions about the new iPhone release date. And while we can’t point to a definitive date at this point, we can take a look at everything we know about the iPhone 6 release and help set the stage for those that are thinking about buying Apple’s 2014 iPhone.

All Signs Point to September

iPhone 6 release date rumors have been swirling around for months. Early iPhone 6 rumors were conflicted, per usual, and pointed to two possible release windows. The first, during the summer, a window that has some historical significance given that Apple used to announce the iPhone at WWDC. The second during the fall.

As we’ve pushed deeper into the year, and closer to the start of WWDC 2014 on June 2nd, it’s looking like Apple’s annual developer conference likely won’t play host to an iPhone 6 announcement. iPhone 6 release date rumors exclusively point to an arrival in the fall and while it’s not confirmed, those interested in the new iPhone release would be wise to shift expectations to the familiar months of the year.

The iPhone 6 release date may come in the fall based on a new earnings report.

When we say exclusively, we mean exclusively. Below are all of the latest iPhone 6 release date rumors. It probably won’t take long for you to notice a trend.

  • iPhone 6 release date as early as September – Nikkei
  • iPhone 6 release date in August or September – Steve Milunovich UBS via Barrons
  • iPhone 6 release in the fall – Andy Hargreaves at Pacific Crest via Business Insider
  • iPhone 6 scheduled for third quarter 2014 – ZDNet Korea
  • iPhone 6 release date in September, another later in the year – Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors
  • iPhone 6 release in September – iFun
  • New iPhone release in August or September – Economic Daily News
  • iPhone 6 release date in September – Industrial Commercial Times

This is actually a small sample. There are several other reports and rumors that put the iPhone 6 release date inside of the fall rather than in the summer. When there is a lot of smoke, there is generally a lot of fire and at this point, the iPhone 6 release date, at least one release date, will likely land sometime in August or September.

The specific iPhone 6 release date probably won’t be revealed until just before Apple’s iPhone 6 launch event. Last year, we exclusively reported that the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c release date would be September 20th. That report came a day before Apple’s September 10th launch event and it was right on the money.

Two Release Dates & 2015

Sources agree on a new iPhone release in the fall but they don’t agree on all of the details. Namely, it’s still not clear if Apple will release two iPhone models in August or September or if it will release one and then wait to release the other.

EMSOne, Reuters, Ming-Chi Kuo, Steve Milunovich from UBS, and a report from The Commercial Times all point to a delayed release for the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6. The Commercial Times suggests that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 could have been pushed into 2015 while the others point to a release later in the year.

iPhone-6-Larger-Stronger-Thinner

Kuo, a respected analyst from KGI Securities and the man who accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s’ features before its launch, claims that the larger iPhone will be out in time for the holidays.

Last year’s iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c arrived at the same time and were released on the same day. However, we saw Apple split the release dates of the iPad mini and the iPad Air despite announcing them on stage at the same time. At the very least, it’s looking like at least one iPhone model will arrive in the early part of the fall season and smart money, at this point, would be on the smaller iPhone variant.

The iPhone 6 release date could land in the fall and a new rumor claims Apple may brand the larger iPhone different.

Apple releases products when it’s ready to release products and that means that specific timing could remain out of reach until the company takes the stage later this year.

iPhone 6 Release Date at WWDC 2014

So that’s what we’ve heard, so far, about the iPhone 6 release date. Of course, those rumors all come from secondary sources and not from Apple itself which means that they simply serve as unconfirmed rumors. Credible rumors, but unconfirmed nonetheless.

IOS 8 Feature Wishlist

The first sign from Apple may come at WWDC 2014 on June 2nd. There, the company is expected to announce the iOS 8 update for the iPhone and iPad. New iOS software always accompanies new iPhone hardware and thus, if Apple offers any kind of a release window (hint: fall), then we’ll get our first concrete clue about the iPhone 6 release.

In other words, it’ll probably be worth tuning into Apple’s keynote at 10AM June 2nd. Not only will it show off iOS 8, OS X 10.10 and perhaps, some mystery hardware, it may also tip us off to the iPhone 6 release.

Why is Apple so secretive. Samsung will eat into Apple customers for sure

Agreed. If Apple wants to cut into gs5 sales, they would be wise to at least let consumer know its coming August or September and let them pick between the two phones.

    Disagree totally,
This makes people anticipate and imagine. Why would you be reading this if your curiosity was not peaked? Apple is smart enough to know the mystery creates interest and also protects from other companies copying before release. I think its a great strategy and is the reason i’m holding off purchasing the HTC one M8, so i can see what weapon Apple is bringing to the phone wars.
