iPhone 6 Rumors Point to Water Friendly Design

Published

on

The iPhone and water never really got along, but the iPhone 6 may be ready to handle a water thanks to new iPhone screen technology that could help Apple catch up the Samsung in outdoor use. Part of this new iPhone 6 screen technology will also allow users to wear gloves and offer a better touch screen experience.

This report stops short of saying we can expect a waterproof iPhone 6, which is another oft-requested iPhone 6 feature. Although this could be part of delivering a more durable iPhone 6 that can survive short exposure to water, this may simply offer a better overall iPhone experience in the rain, fresh out of the shower or while using the iPhone 6 in cold weather.

As part of a larger screen that is tougher to scratch, the iPhone 6 may deliver better touch sensitivity, work when water is on the display and work with gloves.

Apple may deliver an iPhone 6 that you can use with gloves on or water on the display.

Waterproof smartphones are still not the norm, but many competing devices are water-resistant which allows users to submerge the phone in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

On the other hand, smartphone screens that work even with water drops on them and with gloves are now common features that Android users and Windows Phone users enjoy.

A report from Snazzy Labs outlines how this new technology may work on the iPhone 6, and how it may be tied into the Sapphire display that Apple is allegedly adding to the new iPhone.

If you try to use the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s with water drops on the screen touch may be erratic thanks to elements in the water interacting with the touch panel like your finger would. This makes using the iPhone annoying in the rain or when you jump out of the pool or shower. Although this is not proof that Apple plans a waterproof iPhone 6, it hints that the company is at least taking into account the number of people who use the iPhone near water every day.

This feature could also allow users to use the iPhone 6 display with gloves on. This feature is part of the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 and several Windows Phone devices. iPhone users currently need to buy special gloves that are conductive to use the iPhone 5s while skiing or working outdoors.

Devices like the Galaxy Note 3, which don’t require special gloves, allow users to turn on high-sensitivity to use the device when your fingers are covered. This is very handy for using the Galaxy Note 3 while outdoors working or for fun like snowboarding and other winter activities.

One downside to the added touch sensitivity is that the phone may activate in your pocket and perform an emergency call. While raking the yard last year the Galaxy Note 3 pocket dialed 911 twice thanks to this setting. This isn’t a widespread problem, but it is one drawback of more sensitive touch screens.

We expect to see an iPhone 6 with a larger scratch-resistant Sapphire screen this fall. The iPhone 6 features a new look with curved edges, rounded corners and a home button on the right side according to multiple leaks. Apple is switching away from Samsung partially for the new iPhone 6 processor and may add an improved camera based on leaks. Other potential iPhone 6 features include NFC, which would allow you to make payments at physical stores using the iPhone.

The iPhone 6 release date is pegged for September 19th, after a mid-September announcement. Rumors suggest Apple plans a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6, although the larger model may not arrive until later in the year.
