Does Your iPhone 6s Really Need a Screen Protector?

Published

on

We’ve shown you how to apply a screen protector on your iPhone, but perhaps a question you should ask yourself before you even buy a screen protector is whether or not you actually need one.

The iPhone 6s comes with ion-strengthened Gorilla Glass, which is to say that it’s scratch-resistant and less prone to shatter if you accidentally drop your iPhone than regular glass.

So essentially, your iPhone 6s’s display already comes with a screen protector of sorts, but many users feel that they need that extra protection for added piece-of-mind. And while Gorilla Glass is scratch-resistant, there comes a point where it can no longer withstand certain scratches. For instance, if you constantly keep your iPhone in the same pocket as your keys, the device will no doubt form scratches over a period of time.

On the other hand, if you’re always cautious about what your iPhone 6s’s screen touches, do you really need to worry about getting a screen protector?

Here are a few reasons as to why and why not it’s a good idea to opt for a screen protector on your iPhone 6s.

The iPhone 6s Is Already Scratch-Resistant

As already mentioned, the iPhone 6s comes with Gorilla Glass, meaning that the screen is already toughened up and ready to take whatever scratches that come its way.

Of course, it won’t stand up to anything, as a knife to the display would easily kill it, but most common household items like keys wouldn’t do much damage initially. However, like I said, if you constantly expose your iPhone to your keys and other sharper objects, you’ll most likely end up with a scratched display eventually.

In most cases, you’ll be just fine without a screen protector, especially if you’re always careful about how you handle your iPhone in the first place. For instance, I never let my iPhone touch my keys or any other sharp object, and I’m even concerned that my nails will scratch the display, so a screen protector probably isn’t necessary for me.

However, accidentally dropping your iPhone is about the worst-case scenario there is, and most likely your screen will crack if it’s dropped. This is where some screen protectors can actually be useful.

Some Screen Protectors Can Actually Save the Day

All screen protectors are not created equally, and there are many different kinds. Most of them, however, are usually made out of a thin and flexible plastic sheet that sticks onto your device’s screen using some kind of adhesive or just static electricity.

More expensive screen protectors are made out of tempered glass, which are essentially just really thin sheets of glass that you stick on top of your iPhone’s display. This makes it so that you’ll still get that natural glass feel to the device, but it does add a bit of thickness, since glass screen protectors are a bit thicker than regular plastic ones.

There are also more rugged screen protectors from companies like Zagg who specialize in military-grade screen protection. These screen protectors are made out of an incredible material that’s insanely scratch proof. They’re overkill most of the time and are fairly expensive, but they can be good for users who work in construction that would have an iPhone exposed to extreme conditions.

However, when it comes to the best protection for accidental drops, we’ve had the best luck with glass screen protectors. As seen in the video above, an LG G3 was accidentally dropped, but the glass protector took the hit and cracked, while the phone’s actual display was left intact.

Of course, some commenters weren’t so lucky, so your mileage may vary depending on what phone you have, what type of glass protector is installed, and how it’s installed in the first place. Which brings us to…

Not All Screen Protectors Can Save the Day

While we’ve found that the glass screen protectors usually do a better job at actually protecting a display, other types of screen protectors will only offer a minimal amount of protection.

More specifically, those cheap plastic screen protectors will do absolutely nothing when it comes to accidental drops. They’ll offer a little bit of added scratch protection, but not much else.

This is why you want to be careful as far as what screen protector you get for your iPhone, as there are different kinds of protectors for different purposes.

Screen Protectors Decrease Responsiveness

This could be quite subjective, but I believe that a lot of screen protectors can negatively impact the clarity of the iPhone’s display, as well as reduce touch responsiveness while using the device.

Furthermore, I’ve never liked using plastic screen protectors or even the options offered by Zagg, simply because they eliminated the natural glass feel of the iPhone’s touch screen, and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of smooth glass on your fingertips when it comes to a high-quality touch screen.

It Never Hurts to Use a Screen Protector Anyway

In the end, if you’re debating whether or not to get a screen protector for your iPhone 6s, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to buy one in the first place, so it doesn’t hurt to get one and install it on your iPhone.

You can buy basic screen protectors for really cheap. This 3-pack is only $5.99, so you’re hardly spending any money to get some added protection, and some protection is better than no protection, especially when it comes to scratches.

I got my 6plus on Monday 9/29 and was VERY careful with it. I didn’t throw it in my purse, pocket, etc. I went to the Apple store on Tuesday and got their screen protector and went to put it on last night. That is when I discovered a lot of little scratches. Most of them are by the home button and at the top edge of the phone. I have never had a phone scratch so easily and without me even knowing how it happened!! After reading everyone’s posts I am thankful that the scratches are only on the edges. I have the protective film on now so hopefully the screen is safe. Note: this “Power Support Anti-Glare Film” does NOT go to the very edge of the screen. I am sure that is because the screen has rounded edges and the film can’t round down to cover these edges. I wish someone would do a story on this. MANY people with same issue. Check Apple Communities for iphone 6 scratches.

I’ve had my 6 for a few days now no screen protector just gets tossed in my pocket. There are no small scratches to speak of anywhere. I had a galaxy s3 previous to this also with gorilla glass. I dropped it into a storm drain and in order to retrieve it ended up using a stick to forcefully drag the phone screen first over many piles of rocks debris sand and pebbles. It took many attempts to fish it out, 10 plus minutes of pure screen destruction literally pushing it down Into rocks and dragging it. The phone has scratches on the plastic but the screen is one hundred percent flawless as the day I bought it.

Gorilla glass. No screen protection. Take that for whatever it’s worth.

I had a iPhone 6 for about ten days when I noticed a few significant scratches on the screen. One was deep enough to feel with my fingernail. I had the iPhone 5 for years, and never had such a bad scratch.
I’m not sure if it was from my keys, or something else. I will definitely get a screen protector if I buy another one.

I do constantly read many comments from iPhone 6/6 Plus owners who previously owned other iPhones in the past that the 6/6 Plus is much more susceptible to scratches.

Best test: I’ve had my iPhone 6 for 9 months with a screen protector on it. This protector, like the others, leaves the edge of glass and a section around camera/speaker and home button exposed. There were no scratches in those areas so ripped off my screen protector, no evidence of where the screen was protected all this time and wear it wasn’t.

Verdict: Screen protector not needed, for my use and environment anyway.

Iphone 6’s screen is not Gorilla Glass. It is sapphire glass. Although it isnt pure sapphire, it is more durable than the gorilla glass on the iphone 5s. Please control your facts next time.

Your an idiot! The iPhone’s screen is made out of a form of gorilla glass. So before you tell someone to check the facts why don’t you take your own advice?

      08/04/2016 at 9:06 pm

actually your both right…to a degree. The sapphire crystal is on the home button only, the large screen is gorilla glass, however, they are looking into replacing the gorilla glass with sapphire in future but it is expensive to synthetically create sapphire, which is by the way pure sapphire, just lab grown as opposed to earth grown.

well all people please tell the truth , if you don’t know please don’t make a comment !! comments from folks who don’t know any better are quite pointless. we don’t understand why some present an opinion point as “facts” , when in reality their viewpoint is based on no facts-just a mis guided opinion. this provides others with the exact opposite of what they came here for.

I completely disagree with this article, for a start if you are willing to spend big money on a smartphone surely you would want to protect it. I NEVER put a phone in my pockets, I’ve seen people pull a new iPhone out of their pockets with scratches all over it which would drive me crazy. I always protect the back of my phone with a tpu gel case and have a screen protector fitted on the front. Fitting screen protectors is a nightmare so I travel 60 miles to a Chinese cellphone shop where they fit them perfectly. I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly and perfectly shops fit screen protectors in that part of the world so I figured a Chinese cellphone shop might be the answer to the problem and it most certainly was. As far as I am concerned a screen protector is a must, not to protect against scratches, but more to protect the oleophobic coating from wearing off. I use a stylus rather than fingers on my screen and I’ve ruined two expensive smartphones within one month of use because the stylus has worn away the oleophobic coating and left large unsightly blotches on the screen where the coating has worn away. For those who put phones in their pockets with keys and coins and don’t mind the odd scratch then this wont be a worry but I’m mega protective of my tech and do everything I can to protect it. In fact just one protector is usually all I need for the lifetime of the device because I do my best to keep that scratch free too and saves a 60 mile journey every time to get a new one fitted. Laugh about it as much as you like but there’s no need to ruin an expensive smartphone with just some forethought and careful handling.

This is utter rubbish. Knives do not affect gorilla glass. It’s not the sharpness of the object that scratches something. It’s the hardness. Gorilla glass is around 7 in the hardness scale. Most metals are around 4. The only thing that would actually scratch it would be sand or dirt (silicon dioxide have comparable hardness to gorilla glass). So make sure your pockets are clean. Don’t worry about keys.

An interesting and very useful subject, big like!
In my opinion, its very good to have screen protector, i had many phones and each of them had screen protector, doesn’t matter if you are carefully, “shit happens” :)), this is the reason that its a good idea to have screen protector. Its not so expensive in comparation with a broken screen.
