By default the iPhone will repeat notifications for messages. This is very annoying if you don't always grab your phone the first time it vibrates. Very often it makes us think something important is happening because the second alert comes pretty quickly -- like a rapid fire message. Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Repeat Alerts -> Never. This will limit incoming messages to only alert you once and to only vibrate once. Of course if you love notifications you can enable up to 10X notifications for a single message.
