iPhone X Takes Snapchat Face Filters to 11

The new iPhone X features a massive selfie camera upgrade that is partly there for Face ID, but the same tech that helps you secure your iPhone will take your Snapchat selfies up to 11.

Apple now uses a front facing camera that can map you face using 30,000 points of IR light. That’s a massive upgrade in the face mapping tech that Snapchat Lenses currently uses and it means you will get way better looking Snapchat Lenses on the iPhone X this fall.

In the photo below you can see Craig Federighi demonstrate this new feature on stage using the iPhone X, which Apple pronounces as the iPhone 10. He is using a special version of Snapchat that isn’t out just yet.

This is just one of the Snapchat Lenses that are available in the app and Federighi wasn’t done showing off this upgraded feature. While talking about how well the iPhone X is able to track his face and show off metallic accents he switched over to a second mask with his face covered in golden roses.

While you may see the Snapchat Lenses get confused and move to a side or glitch on a normal iPhone, the sensors that enable Face ID also make this tracking way better on the iPhone X. You can see in the image above where his eyes are visible and even though he’s at an angle the mask is accurately tracking him very well.

The iPhone X tracks your face better than the iPhone 8 and older iPhones.

Compare this to the Snapchat Lenses below shot using the iPhone 7 Plus. You can see that there are some areas around the edge of the face in the ET filter and when I’m not looking directly at the camera the other Snapchat Lense does not pick up the face correctly.

The iPhone 7 can't match the iPhone X when it comes to Snapchat skills.

Users will not get massive upgrades to Snapchat lenses with iOS 11, or even with the iPhone 8. This is only a feature that you will find on the iPhone X that starts at $999. The iPhone X includes a special set of sensors that are able to map your face out in incredible detail. These sensors enable secure unlocking of your iPhone, Apple Pay and also make the animated emoji, Animoji, possible on the iPhone X.

The iOS 11.4 update added Messages in iCloud and AirPlay 2, but it also brought issues along with it. The iOS 11.4.1 update keeps these long anticipated features and includes fixes for some iOS 11.4 problems.

Specifically the iOS 11.4.1 update;

  • Fixes an issue that prevented some users from viewing the last known location of their AirPods in Find My iPhone.
  • Improves reliability of syncing mail, contacts and notes with Exchange accounts.

This update also includes other bug fixes and security upgrades. It's possible that this update includes a fix for bad iOS 11.4 battery life.

Messages in the Cloud allows you to backup your iMessage conversations to the cloud just like you back up your notes, contacts and photos. This means they are backed up in case something happens to your phone, but that's not all.

Messages in the Cloud syncs deleted messages and threads across your iCloud devices. This means everything will show up the same across your Apple devices. With this in place you should see the same conversations everywhere, all of the time.

This also backs up the photos and attachments in the cloud so you have more room on your iPhone or iPad. When you get a new device all of the messages sync to that device so you don't lose anything.
