The Lego Mindstorms EV3 is an updated version of the robotics interface offered by Lego. By using this device it is possible to create robots that can do a variety of tasks.

The device itself runs on linux firmware which is great for programmers who want to make the device more customizable. Education wise this device may work great to teach kids about programming on a very simple and easy to use device.

Lego showed off the Lego MindStorms at CES 2013.

Another cool aspect of the Mindstorms EV3 is that it comes with smartphone controls. The Lego Mindstorm app demoed in the video below is still in beta but is compatible with iOS and Android.

The EV3 also has an sd card slot to add even more functionality to the programming of the device. There is USB connectivity to the device as well, so connecting it to the computer to program functionality is also an easy task.

During the Lego Mindstorms EV3 hands on, a Lego rep showed off an infra-red sensor to control the robot. The small sensor allows users to move the robot forward, back and turn it around with the the stand alone controller.

On the sensor itself there are three different channels to aid in programming the device. For example the first channel could be used to control device movement, while a second channel could control a mechanical arm.

The Lego Mindstorms EV3 will be shipping in the second half of the year and it will retail for $349.99 in the US.
