LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop Problems Frustrate Users

Published

on

The much anticipated LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally here and slowly arriving for more and more owners, but the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is also causing problems for many. The update initially started outside of the US for unlocked devices, and then earlier this month the LG G2 in the US finally received Android 5.0 Lollipop, starting with Verizon.

The LG G2 was LG’s first smartphone with buttons on the back from LG, and it was rather popular when it arrived in late 2013 to take on the Galaxy S4 and other smartphones in its class. And while we’ve been busy talking about the LG G3, or even the lightly rumored LG G4, there are still millions of LG G2 owners waiting for updates.

Read: Android 5.0 vs Android 4.4 KitKat: What’s New in Lollipop

Back in August last year LG confirmed the G2 would see Android 5.0 Lollipop, and in December it rolled out in Korea and a few other regions. We’ve seen a few LG G3 Android 5.0 updates arrive as well, and now owners with the popular LG G2 are getting the same update. We saw a few bugs when the device received Android 4.4 KitKat, and some with the Lollipop update are frustrated with problems as well.

LGG2_014-575x383

The LG G2 was released in September of 2013 and a few months later Google released Android 4.4 KitKat. The update took a long time to arrive, and eventually caused a lot of problems for LG G2 owners. It was plagued with little issues that slowly have been fixed, but many are still anxiously awaiting Android 5.0 to deliver new features, an improved look, and to fix some of the bugs introduced with Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Last week Verizon announced and confirmed the LG G2 Android 5.0 update is now rolling out, and users have been receiving it all week, not to mention others around the globe. That, and T-Mobile is in the final testing phase and could start rolling it out any day now. And while the Verizon announcement had a lot of details and a changelog full of what’s new, it didn’t mention a few surprises in the form of bugs or issues that many owners are complaining about.

LG G2 Android 5.0 Problems

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the LG G2 users will notice a few changes immediately. The lockscreen has been completely tweaked and redesigned, as have the notifications in the pulldown drawer. These are better than ever and expandable, but a few have commented on them constantly freezing, not unlocking correctly to each app, and more. This is minor, and possibly something that can be fixed with Android 5.1 Lollipop or future bug-fixing updates.

The LG G2 Google+ Community is full of comments regarding small bugs since the updates, owners frustrated over the lack of details and that isn’t hasn’t arrived yet, as well as potential fixes for some.

Read: How to Backup Android in 5 Easy Steps

Many owners with the Verizon LG G2 have complained that performance starts off fast and starts to get extremely laggy, with one even saying apps refuse to start or work until he reboots. Battery life seems worse, and performance sluggish. At the same time, others are reporting just to opposite. Saying they love the new looks and features, and that battery life has substantially increased.

There has been mention of the keyboard being sluggish and often just not typing any of the keys you press, crashing, and more. Many of these issues could be tied to the Android 5.0 memory leak that’s reportedly fixed in Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Some Verizon owners aren’t able to download the update, and part 2 keeps failing. We’re hearing that plugging it into a computer and using Verizon’s update software will fix that. Then, some reports claim that some users got the update on Verizon without accepting it. Meaning they wanted to wait, but it started, rebooted the phone, and updated to Android 5.0 without any interaction. We’ve been hearing this a lot lately, and may be a new move by Google and carriers, and it’s something to be on the lookout for. If your device is expected to get the update, be sure to backup everything just in case. As you never know when you’ll have potential issues.

Tips

First thing you’ll want to do after such a major software update is to turn off your smartphone. Not just a general reboot from the options when you hold down power, but actually power it off, then turn it back on. Android 5.0 will optimize all your apps, and start fresh, likely clearing any old files leftover from the update, and this should resolve most issues.

If you don’t like the new software buttons head into settings and customize them. You can change the layout, look, colors and more. The new icons are a part of Android 5.0, but you can revert to the old ones if you’d like.

Another thing users can try before taking more extreme measures is to clean out any leftover remnants from the large Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Advanced users can head into recovery by turning the phone off and powering it back on while holding power and volume down, and clearing the cache. Don’t wipe data, as this will erase the entire smartphone and ALL files. Wiping the cache usually solves almost all problems, and is your next step. Those who aren’t as advanced or don’t want to mess with scary stuff like the recovery mode can simply download and run the Clean Master app. This removes old and unwanted files as well as leftovers from the update. It can improve battery life, return some storage space used from the update, and more.

LGG2_003-575x383

Last but not least is the most extreme measure, which is doing a factory data reset. Personally I do this on all major software updates, to start with a clean slate. Make sure you backup all your files, photos, text messages and more, then head into settings and do a factory data reset. This erases everything and starts fresh, and Android 5.0 Lollipop even has a pretty good restore feature to put icons back where they were, and download all your old apps for you. So give this a try if you’re still experiencing problems. The link above is for the Tap N Go restore, but if you skip this you can select your old LG G2 from a list and restore everything you had before the reset.

It’s no secret that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop has a few problems that Google has been working hard to address. They then released Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, and now even an Android 5.1 Lollipop update is rolling out to some. These could address some of the battery drain and app crashing problems, but for now users are stuck waiting for those to arrive. That or the LG software could see an update to fix problems and further refine the LG Android 5.0 experience. Let us know in the comments below how Android 5.0 is running on your LG G2, what problems you may have, any any potential fixes you’ve found.

I have found with both the KitKat and Lollipop updates that a hard reset was needed before my LG G2 really performed well. I have most of my stuff automatically backed up in the Google cloud, but this time I did spring $4.99 for MyBackup Pro which worked flawlessly for SMS/MMS. Prior to doing the hard reset, the phone was very laggy…

Yea I always do a fresh wipe when I get updates.. and WHAT. you paid for MBP just to save your messages. Download SMS Backup & Restore from Google Play. It saves everything, even MMS, to your device or to the cloud all for free. Then just restore it all. I use it allll the time

With regards to Icons what you get is pretty much what you have. unless you want to customize each icon individually you only have the theme packs a large percentage of us can not rotate the home page when we try. I am seriously looking into CM12 as an alternative to the native lollipop from LG and Verizion

I went ahead with the 5.0 Lollipop update on my Verizon VS980 (LGG2) and on the restart of the phone the screen went great instead of black. Then I held down the power button as it wouldn’t come back on with a regular push if the power button, when it booted normally BAM out of nowhere the 3 black lines appeared. I’m lucky that it was only 3 because there have been much worse cases of this defect happening. On XDA there have been a ton of theses problems, in many different scenarios. So now I guess I’m stuck with the 3 lil lines on the far right of my screen until I find a new phone that I feel is worth the money off upgrading to. Luckily the G2 is still worthy competition versus these new flagships. I just wish LG would admit to the hardware defect that the screens in the LG G2 suffer from.

Ever since the lollipop 5.0 update, my battery has drained dramatically. I have to recharge it twice in one day and I work at Subway so I can’t get on my phone. Also my phone has been lagging as well. It takes forever to upload anything like fb or even gallery. Lastly I’ve tried turning my phone off then back on. And I’m still having problems. I don’t want to factory reset it but if I have to I will.

My battery has been draining rapidly ever since an update in January. I’ve found that it is the WiFi that is to blame. I don’t have to be using the phone at all for it to drop 10 percent in 30 minutes. I shut off the wifi and the battery will stay full for hours before registering a drop. Shut the wifi off and the bluetooth off if you aren’t using it and I’ve found that this helps.

I’d like to know this too I do not like the new icons and I can’t find themes anywhere to change them.

I’m very dissappointed with the effect that Lollipop has had on my G2. There’s significantly more battery drain. It takes much longer to recharge, I’m getting mysterious new voicemail indicators when I have no new voicemails, apps are slower to open and respond and occasionally lock up. My phone was working beautifully before and lollipop broke it!

Bottom, left – right swipe action to do SCREEN SHOT is now gone. WTF?! NOT happy about that!! I use it all the time for note taking, etc. PLEASE tell me I can get this back!!!!!! 😡
    Very frustrating!

    • Jillian

Just hold power button and volume down button at the same time to take a screen shot.

I can’t get that to work without capturing the volume control as well, so it covers part of the Screen. I’m so frustrated! I hate that they changed it. 😟

The new button they put in for TASK MANAGER…. Who needs it??!!! Its just a waste of memory and battery!! I have my shortcuts on my home screens for that! Pointless change!

          04/26/2015 at 2:17 pm

Mine did the complete opposite it transferred everything from my notepad to quick memo, which I had never used before, and removed the notepad app completely. Now that I’m forced to use it I hate it, it deletes any pictures you add to a memo no matter how many times you re-add it and it won’t let you delete the blank space it left behind. I’m afraid to find out what else it will just delete god forbid it’s something super important so don’t miss it too much.

Mine did the update to 5.0.2 and now I have no service. I think my sim is fried but it shows on setup that it is activated. I did a hard reset because my phone wouldn’t shut down, it would only shut down and restart ( the other two options were greyed out ). After the hard reset I can now shut it down but I still have no service. Just checked it says my radio is off??? Guess I gotta make a trip to the verizon store… :(

complete disaster, now my volume control has a mind of it’s own and goes to vibrate when it wants to, as far as text messaging, the common characters aren’t there if I misspell something, I hate the colors and the different icons, and now my text msgs are showing up twice. Battery usage went down, they either get this fixed or I’m going to an i-phone. My phone was great with the kit-kat, also if anyone knows as to why my phone won’t alert me when battery is going low, tech support was of no help

    • Christine

      04/15/2015 at 4:47 pm

My colors change arbitrarily. Only black and white are options for the menu bar in settings and yet sometimes it’s orange, sometimes teal. Wtf? And losing the quickmemo screen capture option to save it right to my notebook, royally sucks! And where did the puntuation bar on my keyboard go?

I’m prob switching to Apple aft e r this problem. So they not seriously test crap first? Slow, data issues being slow. I use verizon and feel like I’m on a network that doesn’t even work…but it works better on the verizon network than on any wif I network. My texts lag at least for a good chunk of the day. I’m constantly restarting my phone. Such a pos.

    04/12/2015 at 11:05 pm

The keyboard has definitely been buggy; as well as returning to my home screen after clearing my background apps.
Anyone else notice the disappearance of the arrows in the keyboard that allowed you to navigate through your typing character by character? Annoying.
I do not like that long pressing the home button to reveal a screen shot option has disappeared.
I’m also missing what was a major convenience for me: Quick Memo. The ability to write over a screenshot and then overlay the writing on the live screen was THE feature that made this the phone for me.
I’d much rather long press my home button to access my task manager than have this extra square. It’s obnoxious, and has completely eliminated some of my favorite conveniences on my LG G2.
On the upside, “priority mode” for notifications is a much improved option from the former quiet time/sleep mode, which only worked part of the time. (I forget the official name it had.)
Despite some of the neat little improvements (like word-prompted emoticon suggestions), I prefer my dated Kit Kat… and I was really looking forward to embracing this new version.

      08/21/2015 at 8:25 am

I used quick memo all of the time for saving information, important information, into a specific folder.it was things like screen names, passwords, and etcetera. I don’t know what I’m going to do without that. :-(

Terrible affects on my LG G2
Lags/Freezes/Battery Drains/ Seemingly Always overriding and using up all of my data…
notifications on top rarely go away after trying to dismiss them, and the same with messages/emails and others.

This is a bad day to be an android user… I hate Apple but I may switch to them because this is bull shit.

Worse thing I’ve noticed is the keyboard. It’s not predictive till the word is almost entirely typed in. Plus it is always auto-correcting me even though I spelled it right. Usually resulting in an entirely different word.

Plus battery drains a bit faster.

I really hate this new update. I loved my phone before, and now it’s just frustrating to use. The new look is terrible and I hate that they took out the brightness setting bring so readily accessible. Also I don’t know how to go in between my tabs now for Google chrome. It’s such a pain the ass. They took everything out that made this phone convenient.

I use to change my music name and all that other stuff. Now I can’t change it.
The update deleted most of my music, a lot of important photos, some contacts, its lagging my phone to where i can barely type, and some other stuff..
It’s making me mad that I can’t change my music’s name, artists, album and other stuff..
    Please add back?

Worst update ever! I practically cannot use my phone at all since the Lollipop update. Email freezes every single freaking time I open it, so I now have a smartphone I cannot even review email on. The rest of the apps are sluggish, and the phone overheats if it is plugged in ( but battery drains in 4 hours if it isn’t plugged in). Seriously considering getting a different phone.. It has been 3 weeks and my phone is basically a paperweight.

    04/26/2015 at 2:34 pm

I’m having two issues that I’ve noticed so far that infuriate me. I used to only use the notepad, not quick memo, for everything and since the update it moved all of my notes into quick memo and deleted my notepad app altogether. Now that I’ve been using it I have a memo I inserted a picture into and it has deleted it twice plus it won’t let me delete the empty space left behind from the deleted photo. Second problem, everything I had put on my calender is gone, it only saved the stuff from last month and I had a ton of very important things noted on my calender so I’m pissed, is this happening to anyone else?

Nothing about this update can be appreciated. Don’t like the menus, the screens, the colors, the icons, nothing. I lost data, my phone is having battery issues, apps are missing that came with the phone originally. The phone was a mess and it took hours to fix and set up the phone so that it was somewhat usuable. Bookmarks are gone in browser. My home screens are a complete mess. The way the texting screens are used suck. Update simply made awful changes and the phone unusable until I worked hard on it. Someone owes me credit or a pay check for the mess that was made with this update.

    05/06/2015 at 7:27 am

I think some users will have more issues if they had an over abundance of apps and didn’t keep what I call a ‘clean house.’ A should have done a back-up first. Updates in the past and with other phones have never been a problem. There are functions in some menus that are missing that once was there. Taking away our ability to have greater control over the apps, the choices over phone operation, and our data. I had no idea an update like this would be something to avoid. Learn from this. Mobile devices are the biggest problem when it comes to privacy and security. We are being taken advantage of by providers, free apps, operating systems for the phones, the makers of the phones. They are running wild with our data and personal information and it will only get worse. Now I know to pay more attention and research first as I have for years on my home computer.

Just got the update from T-Mobile. Sucks!!!!. My battery is drained after 8 hours of very minimal use.Receiving a couple of txts and 3 phone calls. Started with full battery at 6am, by 2pm my battery is at 2%. Took out the notifications too. Could not even contact my kids before pickup at school!!! WORST update EVER! This Lollipop update has made my smartphone, well, STUPID. Phone lags, battery being drained, websites loading as if I’m using something as medieval as dial up, colors..AWFUL, app issues, including getting Google Play to open, theme setting option…GONE, keyboard issues and more!!! LG G2 would not send or receive group or picture texts over wifi connection after update, now it will not even connect to wifi tells me my sim card is bad. I have a G2 through T-Mobile and I can no longer manage notifications. I had them set so that I didn’t get any between midnight and 7:00AM. Now, not only can I not figure out how to do that, they are showing up on my lock screen, which I view as a security issue. Does anyone know how to fix this? Oh, I also hate everything else about the alleged “upgrade,” from aesthetics to performance.

My phone is behaving horribly since it updated to Lollipop and continues to do so even after a Factory Data Reset. My touchscreen does some random things on it’s own at times, Google Now and Google Play pop up randomly when I am doing other things and it even dialed 911 on my while I was driving to the store yesterday twice. This is crazy! Someone needs to get some bug fixes out quickly. I can’t believe such half baked software got rolled out to the general public like this.

It’s comforting to know it’s not just me. I used to love my G2 before this latest update. Now texting is a pain and battery life is noticeably worse, but I think what bothers me the most is how slow it is to respond. Is there a way to revert to the previous version of the android software?

My phone has completely messed up since the update. Battery goes faster whether I am connected to WiFi or not, certain letters and number in my keyboard do not work and for that matter certain part of my screen doesn’t work. I called customer care (tmobile) and they admitted to several people having this problem but there really isn’t a solution. I was told to do a factory reset and I did it 3 times with no change. I love my phone but I can barely deal with it now. There has to be a solution I don’t want to get a new phone

I can’t even add the word “You’d” to my dictionary. It I put the ‘ in it says invalid character and won’t let me add it. The keyboard is all jacked up. Battery life is pathetic. Do not disturb mode is complete trash and does not work properly. I lost the doodle option on photos. I can delete an email, then 2 seconds later its back. My service quality has gone way down. Hardly make phone calls. Half the time I have to attempt to dial. Then wait 5 seconds. Hang up. Then try again to get it to work. I can’t ever send a picture message over wifi anymore. It always kicks over to 4g, or most of the time, 3g. Which then fails. And the only time I have a chance of receiving the damn picture I have to turn on off my WiFi and always keep looking to make sure it doesn’t kick it back on while trying to get the picture. No, my optimization is turned off. All in all. I now punch my phone 7-10 times a day due to severe aggravation. This update is complete bull and android is now total trash. I hate iPhone. But I will now be switching over. Android has lost a very, very, VERY loyal customer. I’ve converted my fair share. And now will be reverting them back. Nothing good will ever come out of my mouth for android. Its been 3 weeks of this crap and reading everything online and seeing how they have done nothing! Nothing has been fixed. Nor will it be. This is pathetic android.

I forgot to mention about the keyboard having troubles pushing the buttons prior to my hits on the phone. Such as now. Half the time I have to push real hard for it to register. And this was a brand 42nd replacement. New** awesome auto correct you piece of crap is. Os**

Backup your phone and perform a factory data reset.

I updated my LG G2 to android 5.0.2 and the main problem i am facing is that battery drains so fast. Doesnt even last more than 6 hours. Will my phone be updated to 5.1.1?

I hate the upgrade too. Mad bought LG in the first place because the new iPhone keyboard was hard to read. The lollipop upgrade gave my LG the awful iPhone keyboard! Pictures no longer rotate when I rotate my phone, battery life is maybe half what it was, and my email freezes about 40% of the time. This is no longer the phone I bought and contracted for. When the do upgrades, they should make it possible to revert to the old way if you don’t like the new after a trial period. Mand why don’t they test this stuff out before pushing it on us and using customers as their beta group. Probably going back to iPhone but really annoyed, I was very happy with my phone before this update

    I can’t get into google play. – 5.0.2 Lollipop

I tried the two other suggestions I found around the web

Force stop, then Clear data which also clears cache, & then delete updates… Then Shutdown the hone & restart it. This did not solve the problem.

The second suggestion was to go into APPs then scroll over to ALL and “RESET” except their are two options so I choose reset default apps and Play Store was one of 2 other apps in their…. didn’t solve the problem.

If it were any other app i’d go to the Play store & remove / re-download it. But what the hell do i do now?
