LG G3 Android 5.0 Update: What US Owners Need to Know

Published

on

This week the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update finally arrived for users in the United States. A few weeks ago LG started teasing that it was “coming soon” for all users, and as of February 10th the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is officially rolling out in the U.S. starting with AT&T.

Last year LG announced its brand new flagship G3 smartphone. Offering one of the best overall devices in 2014 with top-tier specs, an impressive 5.5-inch Quad-HD display like the Nexus 6, and extremely small bezels delivering a big screen in a small package. Many owners have been growing impatient waiting for this update, and now it’s here.

LG’s promise to deliver an LG G3 Android 5.0 update before the end of the year was met, but only for owners outside of the United States. In December it hit Korea, India, Poland, and parts of Europe, and now it’s rolling out on AT&T with recent leaks suggest Sprint will do the same before the end of the week. Below is everything we know so far, and what owners can expect.

A few months back LG confirmed the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update was a work in progress, and users can expect it to arrive before the end of the year. As we mentioned above that deadline was met for multiple users, but all of those were smaller regions outside of the United States. Meaning those with an LG G3 on AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and others have still been patiently waiting for the upgrade.

The wait is finally over in the United States, as this week AT&T announced the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally here. We’re already getting confirmations that the update is rolling out to users, and they’ve been getting the over the air notification to download a large nearly 700MB update file. The LG G3 will update, and be on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop once you’re done.

However, that is just one carrier out of all major carriers offering the impressive LG G3 from last year, not to mention there are still millions of LG G2 owners waiting for it as well.

LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop Release

As we stated above, the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update has officially started in the United States. This week AT&T pushed the update out to owners, and recent leaks claim Sprint will do the same starting February 16th. That leaves T-Mobile, Verizon, and US Cellular to follow in the near future.

Right now owners of the LG G3 on AT&T can head into settings > about phone > and check for updates, in which they should find a large 700MB file to download. It may take a while to finish and WiFi is recommended, then within 5 minutes or so the update will complete and you’ll be on the latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop software. So far we’re hearing mostly positive reports from the update, so accept the update and give it a try today.

Here’s a look at Android 5.0 Lollipop on the LG G3 thanks to a user on YouTube.

US Carriers

Again, all major carriers in the United States are offering the LG G3, so we can expect updates from all of them in the near future. AT&T kicked off updates first, Sprint should be next, but we’ve also seen reports that T-Mobile will do the same in the next few weeks. Meaning most LG G3 owners should have Android 5.0 Lollipop before the end of the month.

That being said, Verizon Wireless hasn’t been the best when it comes to updates for LG, as they usually give priority to Motorola and the DROID lineup, and more recently, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 update. At the same time, LG is pushing hard to get the update out to as many owners as possible, and it’s likely Verizon and US Cellular could push it in the coming weeks as well.

All said and done, the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally here, rolling out to a select few carriers as we speak and should continue to arrive for all owners in the coming weeks, or within the next month or so. We’ll keep an eye out for more carrier announcements.

Possible Delays

Of course there is always a chance that things get delayed. Android 5.0 was replaced with a bug fixing Android 5.0.1 Lollipop release less than a month later, and this made many manufacturers that were close to issuing updates have to stop and start over certain aspects of the software upgrade. That said, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is what LG is rolling out to owners this week, so things should be all set for the rollout to continue.

It’s worth noting though, that Google’s released Android 5.0.2 for some Nexus devices last month, and another broad rollout of Android 5.0.2 could cause a stir. Likely LG will finish this round of Android 5.0.1 updates, then move to Android 5.0.2 or even the recently revealed Android 5.1 release.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Problems

As we stated above, the initial release had a few problems and its likely that any updates could still have a few as well. No update is perfect, and everyone knows that from Samsung to Google or Apple. The LG G2 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update had tons of problems, so LG will surely take a much different approach to ensure the best experience possible once they finally deliver Android 5.0 Lollipop to all G3 owners.

While we can’t predict these problems or issues, most likely a few will be present. Hopefully LG manages to take their time and get as many things right as possible, and can deliver the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update in a timely fashion with as little bugs as possible. We’re still seeing reports of reboots, app crashes, and some instability with some Nexus devices, and some may be present on the LG G3, but so far the comments we’ve received from AT&T LG G3 owners have been mostly positive.

I have had nothing but issues since the update. Wi-Fi barely works tried all the tricks to fix it. Some apps won’t update like Facebook. Some updates on apps wouldn’t download. Avoid till bugs worked out.

Had no choice download started even though I declined, absolutely killed my g3. No WiFi, no Google, no Facebook. Affected everything except the phone features. Had to drive 30 miles to the AT&T store and buy a $20. SD card to back up my data and do factory reset. Still lost a lot of my pictures, all of my sms message log, and Gmail.

My did upgrade during night automatically. Next day had to charge battery three times by noon. Took to AT&T retailer. They got customer service on phone and they couldn’t get it fixed. Finally did a factory reset. Lost all apps emails, text messages. Non can’t get google talk to work and battery life is worse than before the 5.0.1 upgrade. LG3 is virtually usless.

New update seemed to be fine. It fixed my voice mate from popping up at random times howver I can no longer receive any notification while I use Wi-Fi. The only one I get is texts. But as soon as I go to mobile Satan I get a flood of the notfications I eventually saw or have not gotten.

I fixed mine by going to DATA under setings and making sire “restrict Background Data” box is UNCHECKED on each Google application. Then update via Google Play. i also re-synced all Google apps after I updated them and rebooted. That solved the Google Play Services update freeze. Now everything works fine and a little faster though I’m not a fan of the new GUI and button layout.

    I regret doing this update
Trouble with Wi-Fi and Facebook ever since.
Battery life is worse than it was before!

I’m with Alex. I can longer use Wi-Fi since the update. To use Facebook I have to uninstall, reinstall, and then use immediately. Once I leave the home page of Facebook I’m back too square one. I’m having to use all of my data allowance to access Facebook.

Having the exact same issues with Facebook as Trish and Alex. Uninstall, reinstall, use for a minute, then no updates. I am extremely annoyed. Not really tech savvy so the whole “back up and do a factory reset” is intimidating to me. Seems like this should have been worked out before it is sent out to millions of phones. Stupid.

I also refused the update for as long as I could. I went to bed one night with the phone working, in the morning it was hot and trying to boot up and couldn’t. I KNOW its from the update. I have had the phone 5 months VERIZON said I could send it in , but it would cost me 299.00 to 500.00. No guarantee on the price I would have to pay. It would be up to them.
