LG G4 Problems Fixed in New Update

Published

on

LG’s new G4 smartphone is one of the best Android devices available on the market right now. It features a big and bright 5.5-inch 2k display, stunning genuine leather build materials, the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop and arguably the best camera on any smartphone. However, it does have a few problems, and an issue with the touchscreen is a big one that is reportedly getting fixed with an incoming update.

Now that the LG G4 is available around the globe and from all five major carriers in the United States, more and more reports are starting to surface about LG G4 problems. Issues ranging from the touchscreen not noticing touches or turning on with the tap to wake, LED notification blinking for no reasons, and countless others.

The biggest issue is with the touchscreen not always recognizing taps, which appears to be a pretty big issue at the moment. That said, only a select few are experiencing this, and most likely it can be fixed via software updates. This week we learned one of many was released, and below is everything you need to know.

G4-UAG-screen-L

Along with a few reports of the screen having some funny colors, bluetooth issues, and some quality control problems, the biggest issue is with the touchscreen. The LG G4 has a beautiful 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display that’s one of the best on the market, but we’re hearing a few horror stories about it not recognizing taps, swipes, and general usage.

This is causing problems for users trying to interact with apps, type with the LG keyboard, or even unlock or wake the phone with tap to wake and KnockCode. We have good news though, at least one update is on the way to fix some of these issues.

Shown above is a tweet by Buzz Jensen, head of mobile marketing at LG Mobile and T-Mobile. According to him, a software update is either already available or coming soon to all versions, and the T-Mobile model, aimed at fixing some of these touchscreen problems.

Heading into the app update center users are only seeing an update for the LG Keyboard, which should solve a few issues with it being unresponsive, but that isn’t the only problem. Outside of the keyboard the G4 sometimes doesn’t recognize taps. His response was somewhat vague, and he didn’t clarify if there’s an actual software update coming, or if he meant the keyboard update, so we’ll have to wait and see.

That said, many users are reporting that the LG Keyboard update fixed their problems, so those still experiencing it should at least give that a try.

However, a post over at XDA Developers claims there are more than just a few problems going on, and a keyboard update isn’t all that needs to be done. We could see an actual software update come later that fixes these issues, but for now this appears to be one of the only solutions.

Developers are suggesting owners head into the hidden developer options menu and enable the setting called “Force GPU Rendering” which will fix the touchscreen issues, and disabling the LG dual-window feature could also speed up the smartphone, for those who are experiencing lag and other slowdowns.

At this time we’re not sure if Jensen’s comments were regarding an actual over the air software update, or just a tweak to the keyboard. That said, head into settings > about phone > and check for updates to see if your LG G4 has the latest software. Are you experiencing issues with the LG G4 screen? Drop us a comment below if so, and if the recent LG software update or keyboard update solved your problems.

I also have experienced the touchscreen lag on my new T-Mobile LG G4. Yesterday, I followed your recommendations and upgraded the LG Keyboard App. However, I have not found that the problem has been resolved.
Particularly when typing (using Swiftkey) I notice that not all the letters tapped were recognized. Obviously, the process is delayed…
Great phone, better than my Note 4 or Nexus 6. However, this touchscreen problem has me concerned.

Same here! I keep checking for updates on my LG G4 but it says no new updates found and the last update was August! This is insane! I have the Swiftkey keyboard because it was always amazingly accurate and fast on my Samsung S4 which I now miss terribly and wish I stuck with Samsung. I will try the developer option and click the “Force GPU Rendering”. If this doesn’t work, I will take it back to Verizon and since I pay for the added warranty, I will request a newer model phone. Maybe because it JUST came out this summer it has a few bugs that have since been fixed in the newer versions??!!! I hope! I can’t stand typing so slowly….I am a HUGE texter and use my keyboard for work, personal ,etc and it is constantly lagging! Sometimes it won’t even click on certain spots on the phone screen too lke that one spot is defective.

It also wakes up for no reason at all throughout the day which is annoying because IDK if I missed a call or text and it’s annoying! And the LED light constantly blinks for no reason too! But not a big deal that by any means!

PLEASE HELP and give us advice!!!

Got myself G4, from AT&T, around the 11st of June….. Have had NO problems with it. It responds to every touch/command. I hope everyone gets their problems cured, cause it is an awesome device! Good Luck All.

Mine has the touchscreen problem. I received the over-the-air update and it did not help. I’ve turned off MANY app and features. I’ve turned on “forced GPU rendering”. I’ve turned animations from 1.0 to 0.5. I’ve offered it chocolate and sweet words. Typing still misses quite often. It also lags. Noticeably. Getting more frustrated every day. Missing my old G3.

I have already written about this same problem. I have not noted an improvement. I am required to be very deliberate when typing otherwise, letters will be skipped. I am hoping for a prompt resolution…

My mother and I both have a verizon lg g4 and both have a serious touchscreen problem, especially with the keyboard. I have tried this app Update and it says there are no available updates. I am a big lg fan but am very dissapointed with the touchscreen lag and missed taps. Even the knock on/off doesn’t respond right and you have to watch everything you type. I sure hope they push a fix soon. We never had trouble with our lg G3’s

Got my G4 first day available at Verizon store, fantastic phone in many ways (MOST) but screen has become more and more problematic over time, and then showed scrambled image, like hazy bands of color running vertically, no discernible image, just the basic colors of my homescreen, and that was after struggling to wake the screen up at all, both with taps and with rear power button. Only after multiple attempts did it wake up, showed the scrambled screen, I got it “blacked out” again, then awakened again, this time holding the power button till it gave “Power Off and Restart” option. It rebooted, still not quite right, went through another reboot, and has worked since. I’m VERY concerned that this phone will have to be replaced, but am going to be forced to do a Factory Reset first, and hope it corrects something. That’s a pain, but if the problems go away, will be very worth it. The camera and screen are amazing! (when they WORK.)

I had the same blackout issues with my phone, Sprint exchanged it for me and the new one did not have the issues. They seem to be related with specific batches or similar, maybe an exchange would help. I did not have any of the other screen issues with either phone.

I’m from the UK and got my G4 From Three. I also have these touch screen problems. There’s a hidden menu where you can test the touch screen by keying in 277634#*# and even with an app that’s supposed to fix it or alleviate the issue, it still occurs.

Other than that, I’m loving my G4. Swapped from Xperia Z3.

I am also having the issues with the screen. It really bothers me when I’m trying to scroll through any app or trying something as simple as texting. The screen becomes unresponsive and lags tremendously. Bothers me that we are forced to pay so much for these “smart” phones. Hope this gets fixed soon. I upgraded from the galaxy S4 to the S6 Edge. The S6 had some issues that I Wasn’t willing to deal with. Heard the G4 was doing well so have it a shot. As of now, I’m regretting it.

I just bought my G4 the first week of June. The first time I tried texting someone I had issues with the keyboard. I restarted the phone to see if it would help. It helped some but the keyboard still lags. I use Swype when I text instead of pecking each word out. The keyboard constantly puts the wrong words in. Some times it will put 3 words in, that have nothing to do with what I’m trying to say, for the one word I’m typing. I currently am using a third party keyboard app. I’m also having problems with a couple of apps not working on this phone. One is a first person shooter game. The game won’t load. I have to tether my old phone to this one to be able to pay the game. If anyone can help me with this I’d greatly appreciate it.

I noticed the same screen problems. Returned the phone within the 14days and waiting to see if the issue gets resolved before deciding to get another g4. I really loved the phone except for this issue which is a big one. If it gets fixed I’ll definitely get another g4 .. Until then I’ll keep using my old S4.

I am having a problem with the lg key board where the touch is off, lgbut only for the last row of keys. So when I try to hit the space bar, the forward slash is selected. It also means the enter key can’t be utilized. So I just switched over to the GO keyboard. Actually like it much better anyway. The keys are too small and too spaced part on on the lg keyboard.

I’ve had a problem with the screen splitting vertically and half of it freezes. I returned my first G4 after 10 days because the problem made the phone unusable. I just had the same thing happen to the replacement but so far it’s intermittent.

I too have had the split screen freeze issue. My husband & I both got the G4 the middle of June. Within 1 week mine started the split screen freeze thing. Sprint replaced with a new phone. Now, 2 months later, my phone is doing it again. Starts doing it every so often, then increases in frequency. It just did it again but this time, the phone automatically shut down & rebooted, which I’ve noticed to be happening more as well. I love the phone but this is getting annoying!

I have the same problem. I was just wondering what your phone’s model number is. Mine’s LG-H815. I’m just curious to see if the problem is isolated to a specific model of the G4 or if it’s a common problem across all models.

I’m having the same split screen freeze issue. It started on the 16th day after I purchased the phone. Neither Sprint or LG have been willing to help. Like others, the screen splits, freezes then shuts down. The only way I can turn the phone back on is to take the battery out, put it back in then restart. This is terrible. Please post if you,ve found a fix! Thankyou

I’m having problems answering a call. It usually doesn’t answer when I put the phone to my ear and I have to swipe really hard to get it to answer that way.

I still read that this is the best phone out due to specs obviously. My wife, son and I all 3 have the G4. My wife likes nothing about it. She wants her old Note back. My son and I hate the touch issues. We can’t typea thing without making corrections. We are ready to turn our oldGalaxy 3 back on. I would not recommend this phone to anyone. Biggest mistake ever.

I too and having the split screen issue where, half of the screen freezes and the other half Scrolls however, when the phone times out I have to take the battery out in order to get the phone to come back on. After the phone comes back on it goes into an optimizing mode which can take anywhere up to 20 minutes and use half of my battery. This is not very conducive to a person who is on call for a health care agency. Please advise on how to fix this issue as soon as possible.

Love this phone but the keyboard is driving me craaaaazy! The taps on some keys are not recognized and the spacebar is almost always not recognized when tapped. This is my main issue/concern and am considering trading this for the galaxy s6.

Having the split screen issue as well. Had it for 3 weeks before it started – was intermittent, and now is split all the time. Sprint has said that it is a “known issue” and will replace mine – but it is on backorder. Had my old HTC brought back on line till this gets resolved. LG customer support was truly WORTHLESS – this will be my last LG Product EVER.

Same problem, vertical screen split. In UAE LG refuse to replace and ask to wait for new update. Even though i think its hardware problem.
Sure this will be my last LG product

This LG G4 is a horrible device. Mine is 2 months old and have nothing but trouble with it. Split screen, says no internet connection available, and very slow response. DO NOT PURCHASE!

Ill never buy another lg phone. Swype doesn’t work or path following as they call it. Any Samsung phone model is vastly better for screen entry. Better when charging. Replaced phone and second one was identical. Great camera but i hate the keyboard enough to swear off lg. 18 months 2 days before i can get a Samsung.

My G4 also suffers from the vertical split screen issue. Mine is barely 2 months old. The left half of the screen freezes, then it displays a jumbled image; if I continue to use it, like scroll down for example, the screen will shutdown and and it is very difficult to get it back on again.

My phone’s model number is LG-H815. I’m just wondering if everyone who encountered the same split screen issue have the same model number. (Go to Settings > About Phone > Hardware info)

I was having trouble with the screen turning on in my pocket due to bogus double taps. I don’t want the phone to turn on unless I turn it on. Downloaded the QuickShortcutMaker app, went to normal search, searched for “knock”, turned it off. (Needed the QuickShortcutMaker because Verizon apparently decided to hide this particular setting from the normal Settings menu.) Now my phone does not respond to double taps to turn on or off. BETTER YET, IT NO LONGER MISSES TAPS ON THE KEYBOARD. When the phone is trying to sense double taps, it apparently adds a lag that causes single taps to be missed. Since I turned off double tap, I have not missed a tap. Before, I would missed 10-20% of my keyboard taps. With double tap on (Knock on) and Developer Options / Show Touches, the white spot would not show up 10-20% of the time unless the tap was very deliberate. With double tap off, the white spot shows up on every touch unless I intentionally tap very lightly. I will bet that android has a software bug triggered by sensing of double tap.

I had my LG 4 for about 5 months now, the front camera failed a few weeks ago, and now my screen split vertically in the middle, one side is completely dark/black and the other half is working. I tried restarting but it did not help. I regret making the change.

Got mine and after just a week it started having problem with split screen which getting worse and worse up to a point where it just impossible to use the phone.

Contacted LG Canada and was advised that because I bought it not from them or their authorized dealer thete would be a charge to get it fixed.

I do not think it’s fair because obviously this is a common problem which means that LG has been selling defective products and should be responsible for the fixes.

I have had nothing but problems with my LG G4. From the screen not recognizing touch/swipes, not being able to power off to resolve it and have to take the battery out, lagging and NOW with the last update (im in Canada), I have little to no phone service in my house. It won’t send or receive msgs either with my wifi on and data off or even if I have data on, which I shouldn’t when I have bloody wifi!!!! This is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve done a factory reset before (with the touch screen problem) and that fixed that. but this is driving insane.
