LG G6 vs LG G5: Specs

Samsung bought ALL of the new Snapdragon 835 processors for the first part of 2017. Meaning no other company will have one until after April. This meant that LG needed to use the late 2016 Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB of RAM in the phone. It's still extremely capable, but its not as much of a power upgrade from the G5 as expected.

Real talk though, that doesn't matter for 95% of the world. A tiny upgrade to the processor won't make or break the LG G6. Average buyers who walk into Verizon will still love LG's new phone. Don't let that be a deciding factor, because it shouldn't be. Everything else is much improved compared to last year.

With that out of the way, here's the numbers and how each phone compares.

LG G6 Specs

  • 5.7-inch 2880 x 1440 QHD+ IPS Full Vision Display, 18:9 aspect ratio
  • Snapdragon 821 Processor with 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage and microSD card support
  • Android 7 Nougat with LG UI
  • Dual Rear 13 Megapixel Cameras (One wide-angle)
  • 5MP Front Camera with OIS
  • Improved Fingerprint Scanner
  • 3,300 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 (Wireless charging in US)
  • USB Type-C Port, Always-On Display, 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Better Sound similar to the LG V20 (In select regions a Quad-DAC)
  • IP68 Dust & Water Resistance but no removable battery
  • Tiny Bezels, rounded corners on screen
  • Premium Metal and Glass Design, more

LG G5 Specs
  • 5.3-inch 2560 x 1440 Quantum HD Display
  • Snapdragon 820 Processor with 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage and microSD card support
  • Android 6.0 (now on Android Nougat) with LG UI
  • Dual Rear Camera Setup 16MP main and wide-angle or zoom sensor
  • 5MP Front Camera with OIS
  • Fingerprint Scanner, USB Type-C, Always-On Display
  • 2,800 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3
  • Metal Body (kinda), Modular Design
  • More

Sadly the front camera and internal storage wasn't increased, but that's it. Everything else is much improved. The cameras on back are now both better 13MP sensors, rather than 16 and 8MP like last year. And no, dropping down to 13MP doesn't mean its worse. In fact, it's the opposite and should be a far better camera experience.

We really like the addition of IP68 dust and water-resistance, a much bigger battery, wireless charging, and the premium design is on-par with the competition. Last year the G5 had a metallic paint over the plastic body, this year it's all metal. For reals this time.

The photo above comes from LG, showcasing some of the many improvements this year over the G5 and previous generations.
