More Folks Picking Up Electronic Books

Good article from the New York Time on the popularity of electronic book readers.   Between the Kindle and the iPhone, I can’t of another set of devices that have so captured the attention of my friends and family. Is an eBook reader on your Christmas list?

For a decade, consumers mostly ignored electronic book devices, which were often hard to use and offered few popular items to read. But this year, in part because of the popularity of Amazon.com’s wireless Kindle device, the e-book has started to take hold.

The $359 Kindle, which is slim, white and about the size of a trade paperback, was introduced a year ago. Although Amazon will not disclose sales figures, the Kindle has at least lived up to its name by creating broad interest in electronic books. Now it is out of stock and unavailable until February. Analysts credit Oprah Winfrey, who praised the Kindle on her talk show in October.

I have a BeBook and an iLiad (the book edition from iRex) The iLiad was the only one available at that time where I live.
It in my view has two problems: Its just a tad to big at 8.1″ (you can’t easely wrap your fingers around the edges) and its takes about 45 seconds to boot (thats just crazy!) and because the battery runs down in about 14 hours, you have to shut it down unless you want to re-charge the thing each day.

The BeBook has 6″ screen (like the SONY eReader) but with only 4 greyscales its based on the HanLin.
This is rated to keep going for 7000 page-turns without the need to shut it down (haven’t had it long enough to reach that yet) and it turns the pages about twice as fast as the iLiad.
This one is like a pocket book size, but half the thickness, easy to hold in one hand.

Winner: the BeBook (and in my view better key placing that the Kindle) I do not need wireless for my book reading (both devices have SD slots and USB connections)
