Moto X Pure Edition Android 6.0 Update Problems & Fixes

Published

on

In early December the Moto X Pure Edition Android 6.0 Marshmallow update finally started rolling out to users in the United States, and around the globe. The highly anticipated software delivered a lot of new features to the Moto X, but is also causing problems for some.

On October 5th Google officially released Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the successor to Android 5.1 released last year. It’s loaded with new features, better performance and more. It took nearly two months for Motorola to release updates in the US, and now Android 6.0 is arriving for the Moto X Pure Edition, and even the unlocked 2014 2nd Gen model.

Since the update started arriving in around December 11th, and later for most, we’ve continued to see more and more reports of problems since Android 6.0 Marshmallow arrived. Below we’ll be going over some common Moto X Pure Edition Android 6.0 problems, and how to try and fix them.

Moto-X-pure-5

While we’ve had a rather good impression of Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, and other devices, some users with the Moto X are reporting more than a few problems. Some of those were present on Nexus devices, and some aren’t. With every update the possibility of problems is real, but most users should be able to proceed without any issues. However, if you do, these are some potential fixes.

Moto X Pure Android 6.0 Update Problems

For whatever reason, we’re seeing a lot of complaints that those using the Moto X Pure Edition on AT&T haven’t received the software update. The Moto X Pure isn’t sold by carriers, has no carrier bloatware, and comes right from Motorola. This is what allows for such quick updates, but we’re hearing some versions being used on AT&T aren’t seeing the update.

Multiple users in the Android Central forums have reported that taking out the AT&T SIM card and heading into settings > about phone > check for updates over WiFi works, and the update will arrive, download, and install. Others suggest trying a SIM card from another carrier like Verizon or T-Mobile.

This should solve the problem, and if not, it could be because the update is rolling out slowly in stages, to make sure there are no issues. Some Moto X owners will have to wait nearly two weeks for it to arrive. So remain patient, and by the end of the month if it has yet to arrive, then maybe consider other methods, or a factory data reset.

Android 6.0 MMS Bug

Countless reports all over the official Google product forums have confirmed there is a problem with MMS (picture messages) in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. They either fail to send, or don’t arrive correctly for users. Whether this be through Google Hangouts, the stock messenger app, or third party text applications like Textra. It just says “download” and images never work.

We aren’t experiencing this on the Nexus 6P, but it’s been a widespread problem for multiple different Nexus phones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and some with the Moto X. Most users will have no problems with texts or picture messages, but if so, the only solution could be try another text app, or wait for Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to arrive, as the bug was fixed in 6.0.1 last week.

Moto X Pure Android 6.0 Reboot Problems

We’re also getting a lot of reports of random reboots by the phone. Where users Moto X Pure Edition will just reboot for no apparent reason. Again, most reports are positive and we’d still recommend updating to Marshmallow, but there are a few issues some are facing.

Random reboots could be caused by a lot of different things. Apps may not be updated to work with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the phone could have other problems and more. The first step users should do is head to the Google Play Store and update all of their apps. Once you’re on Android 6.0 a few apps will automatically need to be updated, which could be why users are having random reboots.

Read: How to Backup Android in 5 Easy Steps

However, our best bet for almost every problem mentioned today will be a factory data reset. This erases the entire phone, but gives users a fresh clean slate to start off with. Many users claim Marshmallow is faster, better, smoother and a great experience, and many of those did a reset after the update.

Follow the link above to backup all of your information, save texts with apps like SMS Backup & Restore, and do a reset. Android 6.0 has a neat restore feature that will restore all apps, data, game saves and more, so don’t worry. This will be an option once it reboots.

Marshmallow Battery Life Problems

Battery life issues are extremely common after major Android updates so it hasn’t been surprising to see a few complaints here and there about the Moto X battery life being cut in half.

Moto X PE-back

If your Moto X Pure Edition Android 6.0 battery life isn’t what you think it should be after installing Google’s new operating system, wait a few days for the software to settle. Often apps are changed behind the scenes, users do a lot of updates, and even use their phones more for a day or two. Things should calm down.

If the situation doesn’t improve we’ve put together a guide that will take you through some steps to fix battery life. It’s not for the Moto X specifically, but the Moto X runs nearly stock Android so most of those options apply.

Moto X Pure Android 6.0 WiFi Problems

For whatever reason we get a lot of complaints after each update about WiFi problems. Personally, I have the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1 and the Pixel C. All running Android 6.0 or above with no WiFi problems at all. However, if you are experiencing problems, a few quick things could solve the issue.

Moto X PE-google

First up is try restarting your router at home, and if it’s an all-in-one router or attached to a cable modem from a cable company, turn that off for 10 seconds and back on too. This usually clears the air, and allows connections to resume. Another option is to head into settings on your Moto X > WiFi > long-press and forget the your wireless network. Then reconnect and re-enter the password, and WiFi should work again. The same rules apply for Bluetooth issues. Try turning it off and on (both the device and Bluetooth on your phone) and redoing the connection.

Performance & Other Problems

While most reports are positive, with the Moto X running extremely smooth and stable, some are saying the opposite. There could be countless different things, settings, app or more causing problems, and a good start is always clearing the cache after an update. Or even a simple reboot before doing something major like a full factory data reset.

The cache is another thing we always recommend users clear. This is where the actual software file was temporarily stored on the phone for the update. The same process on the 2nd Gen Moto X works on the new one.

Screen Shot 2015-12-23 at 2.40.28 PM

Simple turn off the phone and follow the steps in the image above, and this will clear the cache on your device. While off hold power and volume down to boot into recovery. Be careful to wipe the cache partition, and not a “factory data reset”. At least not yet. After this most problems should go away, performance should improve, battery life could be better and more. This is nearly the last resort for most.

Moto X Pure Edition Factory Data Reset

Most enthusiasts always suggest a factory data reset. This erases everything on the phone (not the micro-SD card) and puts the same stock software as if the phone was brand new on. After the update to Marshmallow doing a factory data reset will wipe the phone out, and allow owners a fresh start with Android 6.0 on board. This is our last suggestion, and something I do after each software update just to be safe.

To factory reset the Moto X Pure Edition go into Settings > Backup & reset > and Select reset. The entire process should only take a few minutes, and the phone will reboot fresh. Sign into WiFi, your Gmail, restore old apps from before the wipout using the instructions on screen at first, and you’re all set.

This typically completely starts users off fresh with a clean, stable, and fast version of Android and gives the best experience possible. If you’re having other problems, drop us a comment in the section below, and we’ll try to answer any questions owners may have.

Updated on my brand new Moto X PE to 6.0 and so far no listed above bugs have been noticed, but another one was discovered. When I try to use MicroSD Card as Adoptable storage (internal mode for mimcroSD storage) it tries to format and gets stuck on 30% immediately; using the external mode works just fine… tried this with two different microSD cards and same result. Hoping 6.0.1 comes out soon!

You must wait it out. It’s not stuck, but formatting in the partition does take some time. Wait it out. Plug the phone in and let it sit. It will format as internal.

I have a moto x play& after the update to marshmallow, it takes a long time to start up… Says optimizing app 1 of 1. The other thing is I can no longer upload photos to Facebook. It just says it failed preparing the upload. Can I roll back my o.s. to the one that actually works correctly?

I own the Moto X pure and I have to say that upgrading to Marshmallow has been a shitty experience. I faced a lot of performance issues and the navigation buttons went haywire. I Factory restored my phone and now after like a couple weeks out of the blue my navigation buttons just wont respond…I have wiped cache, rebooted it over and over and also tried the Safe mode but the navigation button is just driving me Crazy…..
If anyone has had a similar experience OR know how to save me from this crisis,Please HELP!

new moto x owner here and although i have been fairly impressed with the device, i am disappointed in all the bugs. if the same issues crop up after each update, especially on a pure android nexus device, why haven’t they been addressed? rhetorical question but still, just sayin’. i have experienced most of the bugs discussed in the article and message thread and it appears clearing the cache was helpful. i was quick to blame motorola but boy was i wrong. on another note, thanks for the great tips, i have shared this article with friends and colleagues as well.

    I own a moto x 2nd gen. ever since I upgraded to android 6 I encounter 2 problems

1/ my messaging app (the original for texting) keep crashing down whenever I open it.
    2. my phone stopped Identifying incoming calls. it shows only the number but doesn’t connect the number to my listed contact, I have to save each incoming number for a second time in order for the phone to identify the caller next time.

I erased the cache but it didn’t help any of the issues. is there any other advice?

      HI Lior,

I also have a moto x 2x gen. And was looking if I could find a explanation for the same issues. I don’t necessarily have the problem with the message app but the hole not identifying issue sucks!
I never know how is calling me. Please Android, FIX IT !

Motorola took that out because it’s built into Marshmallow now. Go into the sound and notification settings and you’ll find it there. It’s also in the quick toggle menu if you put 2 fingers on the notification bar and swipe down.

My Moto Voice commands (on Moto X Pure 2015) will only work the first time and audio usually cuts out upon the first search result. For example, I call my command to Moto, search for the time, google opens and I start to hear the time but then the audio stops. If I try another voice command, it starts the search and then cancels it back to the last search. If I swipe the old window closed, I can search again. Clearing the cache, removing google app updates, etc has not worked for me.

My Bluetooth no longer works. I turn it on and it turns itself off, won’t even attempt to repair. Not impressed with Marshmallow at all. My Moto Assist worked perfectly before and now its stripped down.

I agree with you, I’m thinking of going back to my old phone which is the moto x 2nd gen. I absolutely loved assist, the other feature I don’t like is the do not disturb, it’s absolutely useless, assist was perfect, I don’t know why they insist these stupid upgrades cause it’s more like downgrading, I used the feature on assist making my notifications and ring tones quiet from 11pm -7 in the morning and sometimes I’d watch a video on fb and I had control of the volume without turning on everything else and with do not disturb when I turn on volume it turns up for everything and I get email notifications and my phone rings. ugh

Dear friends first off all stay on 5.1.1 or 5.0.1 don’t even try to update 6.0 marshmallow. It’s just released but not fully updated and tested on devices. And have many bugs like SD card problems, wifi problem, moto display removed. Sharit transfer problem, sim card issue. Battery drain, dual standby error, drop signal in second sim, many more little bugs. Wait for next update or go to service centre to rollback if updated. Or root but will void warranty then install custom ROM. I will suggest that stay on 5.1.1 and ignore update. And keep searching for next successful update in marshmallow. For Moto G, Moto X, all additions. May be they will launch update soon because here are many bugs in marshmallow for Moto series.

I received the Moto X Pure Edition back in February and had whatever system that was used then. Yesterday I noticed my screen got those lines that you see on an old static television screen and I had to turn my phone off/on and then it went away. Today though, I updated apps like I usually do and installed a new game. While I was playing this game my screen suddenly turned black, but did not lock. I turned my phone on/off, but it continued. I removed the new app but it still would not stop. My dad had experienced the same problem several months ago after he updated his apps. He never figured out which app it was but when the next update for the apps came around he said it went away. I don’t know which apps were updated so is there anyway to stop these black outs until the new updates arrive?

Unfortunately I upgraded to 6.0.1. Few apps stopped working, among them SwiftKey. It says that I need SD card in order to predict text. It doesnt matter if I have SD cart or not and if it is formatted as internal or external. What’s more, I can’t use the camera, since it claim I’m running out of memory (I have 15GB free space). This is the worst upgrade I’ve ever got.

I had problems with the Textra app on sending/receiving MMS. I fixed the problem by resetting the Network settings. I tried this before going on a full factory reset. Will see how long the fix lasts!

Does it work in landscape mode (e.g., open facebook, flip to landscape and try)? If so, it might be an issue with the digitizer. I would send in for repairs, but if you want a workaround (assuming landscape works), download the “set orientation” or “simple control” app (there are others, too). Those will allow you to use alternate nav buttons

My motox pure’s internal memory keeps filling up its at 96% i tried doing a factory reset but it stays at 96% I’m running a custom MM ROM and I have TWRP Recovery. How can I delete some of my internal storage???

I had the same problem with a 128GB PNY UHS 1 card getting stuck at the initial 30% when formatting for internal storage on a Moto G4 plus. I tried everything, but could never get it to work. I had the theory that is was just too big for the phone to format before the software timed out. I bought a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS 3 and haven’t looked back. The phone formatted it as adoptable storage right away, and it’s been working flawlessly ever since.

I’m using Moto X Pure Edition. Yesterday I set the update at 18:00 in the notification pop up box, but when i was playing an app in my moto x around 17:30 suddenly it shuts off but the battery was still in 80%. I tried to switch it on but won’t turn on. I tried to charged it but it’s not charging too. I’ve been trying the Hard Reset since last night but nothing is appearing in the screen. I’ve been holding the power botton & volume down for almost 3 mins and still nothing happens. Should I wait longer till something appears in the screen even if it took me 10mins? :( please I need some help. :( I’m frustrated. :( Any one here who experienced the same problem?

I have a moto pure Edition even though the wifi notification has been turned off I still get Wi-Fi network notifications it is totally irritating it goes on and on constantly all day long while I’m at work and anywhere I’m driving along that it detects a Wi-Fi signal it bleeps out it is really pissing me off and it did it on this phone from day one when I bought it from Motorola brand new

My Moto X Pure is stuck on “DO NOT DISTURB” mode.

If anyone has a solution – other than the factory reset – would appreciate the help.

      Wiping the cache didn’t help.
The only work around I found so far is that I could change the rules of the DND mode and let any call message in..

    • Allan

      02/22/2017 at 7:23 pm

      solution:
      step 1. relax
step 2. go to settings.. sounds and notifications.. DND… make a DND rule that starts in the past and ends in the near future
step 3. put it down, have a whateveryoudlike, go back and tada! :)

apparently this is a known android issue.. if the phone goes down/reboot while in dnd mode..
