Motorola Droid Bionic September Launch Gathers More Steam

Published

on

Alright, so we have just learned that the Motorola Xoom will likely be getting its 4G LTE upgrade in September. That’s great. However, you may recall that Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha stated back in April that the Motorola Droid Bionic would be launching alongside the upgrade. So, unless plans have changed it appears that the Motorola Droid Bionic may not be launching until sometime in September. Now, I realize that plans can change. It’s possible that Motorola finished the Droid Bionic before it could get the 4G LTE upgrade finished, after all, the 4G LTE module did pass the FCC 11 days after the Droid Bionic did, but it’s also very possible that Jha could stick to his word here.

Droid Bionic

After all, there were some whispers about a possible September release date which culminated in some evidence that popped up over the weekend that indicated that Sam’s Club wouldn’t be getting the phone until sometime in September. Again, it’s possible that Sam’s Club is going to be late in getting the Droid Bionic, maybe because Verizon wants to milk its rumored $299 price tag for all its worth before sending it off to the retailers.

And I will say this. Most Droid devices start leaking like crazy before they launch. The Motorola Droid 3 was one, the Droid X2 is another example. Today is July 26th, we’re about 9 days out from that rumored August 4th launch date. It has been a little too quiet for my tastes.

If the Droid Bionic slips to September, Motorola and Verizon have problems so I hope that Sanjay Jha either wasn’t telling the truth or changed the plans for the Droid Bionic due to the iPhone 5 launch.

Well if that’s the case, then I would opt for the Samsung Galaxy S II  (AKA:  Function) as it will probably be released August 12th.  It sports a faster CPU (clocked at 1.2GHz each core) than the Bionic (1 GHz each core.)  The Samsung Function is also a whole lot thinner than the Bionic.  And unlike Motorola who’ll be releasing their first 4G phone on Verizon (Bionic) Samsung already has released the Samsung Charge on Verizon’s 4G network, so Samsung will not be using their flag ship phone as a test subject.
MY RANT:   I am so UPSET!  I am an original Motorola Droid owner and really wanted the Droid Bionic.  But I’m exhausted trolling through websites everyday to have my hopes of an eventual release be thrown back again and again.  ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Motorola!!!  What’s funny is that Motorola must be so inept that they have been allegedly revamping the Droid Bionic since January of this year and still have not been able to push out a product on the market.  Motorola’s Engineers and their Marketing executives are incompetent

I agree… I’m sick of the waiting… sick of being in the dark, and all these promises of a “summer launch”…. i’m going with Samsung on this one. I was on board for the bionic for months but this is ridiculous, Samsung Galaxy S II, here I come. Screw you Motorola…. I’m done waiting.

      07/26/2011 at 6:39 pm

I agree with you fully. I have given Motorola until August 4th to either give us the bionic or at least tell us what is going on. The mist of secrecy and speculation was fun for awhile and added to the lore that has become the bionic. However, I am tired of typing droid bionic, Motorola bionic or XT865 and the only concrete articles pertain to the delays of the bionic. SO if anyone from Motorola or Verizon reads this please take note. I, and many like, me will not wait much longer. Samsung will be slimmer, faster and more than likely a better screen. Also the iPhone 5 is rumored to be on its way in Sept. I’ve had an obsession with the bionic for months now but the crappy updates from the manufacturer and the fact that it has been over (I think) 2 weeks since i signed up for VZW updates but received nothing of the sort. I grow more annoyed each day and will soon boycott Motorola electronics.

Agreed…  I’m tempted to get the S2 regardless of which comes out first.  Not feeling too good about Motorola right now and and the carrot on a stick they’ve been dangling in front of us for months.  I was willing to wait til August 4th, after that date I’m fully on board with getting an S2 instead.

I share your frustration, but something missing from all the Galaxy S II reviews is its abominable GPS reception.  IT’S TERRIBLE!  I have been using it for a few weeks now for a business project and numerous side-by-side comparisons with my Droid 1 and the SGS2 reveal it is horrible to put it lightly, taking 10x longer to lock onto the signal, and invariably having 5x worse accuracy.  Given the number of apps in which I use GPS, this is a very serious issue.  Try googling “Samsung Galaxy s2 gps problems” and you will see the numerous frustrated blog posts about this.

      Quadruple Amen.

I do wonder, however, how many people currently bashing Motorola and Verizon will be back to the same waiting game again for the Dinara, Bullet, and Jet.  These phones should be at least twice as “super” as the Bionic superphone.  However, given Motorola’s track record, I wouldn’t expect the earliest of these phones to be released any earlier than.. let’s see.. Summer 2013.

If you decided not to get Bionic, get the Samsung Galaxy S II, which will probably blow all of iPhone 5’s specs out of the water and will be out before the iPhone 5. iPhone 5 may not even have LTE.

At that point you should probably be looking at the new Nexus or the Samsung Hercules.

Smartphone/mobile computing tech is advancing at an astonishing rate.  Maybe I’m getting old but I’m looking forward to it settling down a bit.  I’m hoping after the quad-core chips come out at the end of the year, advancements will slow a bit.

If it’s not out by August 10th, when I’m back from my honeymoon, I’m finished with the Bionic.  I’ll go with Samsung, no matter which one comes out first.  I google for any news multiple times a day and I’m sick of the runaround.  My fiance and I have been waiting for this damned Bionic for far too long.  If Motorola doesn’t get it out in the next two weeks, then they obviously don’t have their shit together and we’ll be going elsewhere.

    • BrianB13

      07/26/2011 at 8:57 pm

Yeah but its not Moto or VZW that are giving you the run around.  They never said the Bionic would be out in the next two weeks.  They said this summer and summer has a ways to go.  You may regret not waiting for the big three phones to surface by September.

i’m sick of this waiting game myself. my brother and i have been waiting patiently for the bionic to come out. we keep trying the new phones on the market and are not impressed so we still wait. but honestly this is a bunch of bull shi* i’m not going to settle on a phone, and i was set on the bionic, but if another phone comes to the market that interests me the bionic will have just lost another buyer. Fu** you bionic

Moto will be in lots of trouble if they dont get it out before the SGS2.  Alot of people are pissed at moto as is with this wait, and not getting out upgrades to their verizon customers (like myself)  So they will lose tons of business if the DB comes out last.

I am now able to upgrade my original Motorola Droid.  The phone has done very well until recently and I am tired of hearing “Pushed Back”, “Delayed”, or “Being updated again”.  My Droid is turning into a simple phone as the Wifi has died, my signal strength is dropping, and the GPS is starting its own trip into the netherworld.  I need to replace it and I was hoping for the Bionic.  But now the news does not even let me be faithful to Motorola.  I am just as annoyed as everyone else on the delays.  But I dont know about the reliability of the other manufacturers either.  Samsung has done well with other products.  Is it as good with phones as with the rest that it sells?

    07/26/2011 at 8:06 pm

I’ve waited for the Bionic since January. I was due for an upgrade in December but held off. My wife came up for her upgrade and I gave her my upgrade discount because she didnt want to wait. She’s been on the Thunderbolt for over a month now, and all the while I am still waiting. The Droid Bionic promotion started with “The End Of Waiting” but it seems it should have been “You’ll never stop waiting”. I am old school, if you say you’re going to do something, then do it. You ever hear of that Mr. Sanjay?  The only Sanjay I trust these days is Gupta. RELEASE THE PHONE OR STAND UP AND BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHY YOU OVER PROMISE AND UNDER DELIVER

    • BrianB13

      07/26/2011 at 8:54 pm

I have waited since CES for the Bionic so waiting until September when I can in all probability compare the Bionic to the SGSII and iPhone 5.  I don’t have a problem with that.  I want to get the best phone possible.  Nobody has been able to come out with a dual core 4G LTE phone yet.  When you are dealing with new tech there are bound to be problems and there have been.

Maybe Moto should have just stated that they couldn’t get the Bionic to work on the 4G LTE network and they scrapped it and not re-branded the Targa as the Bionic.  They promised the Bionic Targa this summer.and they still have an opportunity to deliver it within that time frame.  So yes, they did have a major set back but its just one setback.  However, if someone does beat them to market with a dual core 4G LTE phone, they are pretty much screwed.

      • 4ddias

        07/26/2011 at 9:15 pm

Back at the start of the year when I visited the Moto website it had an info page that was unceremoniously removed and replaced with something along the lines of “Sorry for the technical difficulties we are retooling the Bionic”.  I get that things happen but the chance for a first impression was blown. They show up at CES with product in hand trash talking their competition (The CES video online confirms that statement) and then get egg on their face because they had to push back the release. They start “leaking” (underground advertising) the release of the “new and improved” Bionic. To me it’s a coward’s way out. They got burned by putting the cart before the horse at CES and sheepishly designed a piss poor ad campaign so they could avoid being held accountable for any other set backs. But what do I know? I am just a worthless consumer with options and believe that people (and companies) should have a little bit of courage and be upfront with things. Tell me when it’s coming out or release it already. I hold Mr. Sanjay accountable because his paychecks are large enough to warrant that. I don’t recall Steve Jobs (Johnny Apple Seed) over promising and under delivering the original iPhone. The man shut his mouth and simply changed the face of hand held devices. (I really hate Apple but credit is due where credit is due)

Simply put: i have more respect for myself to have the aug 4 deadline come and go and wait even more. i’m done and will go with another phone. Even if the phone is not ready and it needs to be pushed off, then they can at least keep people informed of what the hell is going on and confirm or reject the rumored launch dates.

  27. Chris Schlosser

    07/26/2011 at 8:31 pm

Verizon has never officially set a release date or gave any indication of one other than ‘Summer’, so technically they haven’t delayed the release and may still release it on time.  However, I agree with previous posts about how frustrating it is to check for updates daily and see how rumored and speculated dates come and go with no official word or updates and how hopes are built up and then crushed.  I also agree that Motorola is going to miss the boat if this phone isn’t released soon considering the iPhone 5 and SGII (Fascinate) are just around the corner.

  28. BrianB13

    07/26/2011 at 8:40 pm

Motorola and Verizon never have said the Bionic would be out August 4th and it still could be.  Apple hasn’t put out the iPhone 5 yet and they have been more secretive than Moto/VZW but yet I don’t see complaints about them.  Moto/VZW said this summer.  Its still summer.

So you guys go out and snatch up a phone in the next two weeks or so that isn’t dual core 4G LTE on a two year contract.  How’s that going to be working for you by the end of the year?  Next year?  Or the year after?  You know more advanced phones will be coming out.  Patience is something that is hard to do at times especially in situations like this.  I get that.  So at this stage, I really want to be able to compare the Bionic, Galaxy S II and iPhone 5 and it sounds like I can do that in September.  I would implore all of you to do the same.  Otherwise, two months from now you may regret not waiting and making a decision you could be stuck with for the next two years unless you don’t mind coming up with around $600 for another phone.  I’m just sayin…

With all these new leaks and speculations, you’re forgetting the only official information we have. Verizon and Motorola both said summer release! September is not summer!

There is alot of frustration and I agree with everyone. Motorola isn’t going to get the amount of sales it hoped for because they never gave a date to which the bionic is available. Though I do think it will be in august only for the simple fact that there was those leaks that said the Droid 3 would be on July 14th and it came out earlier. So I am hoping that it will definitely be august. I been waiting for this phone like everyone and I am past due for an upgrade. My phone I am using now is the original Samsung omnia I want a droid..a good one.

I agree… I’ve waited this long, I’ll wait a little longer and compare the DB to the SGS2 and the IP5.  I personally prefer the AMOLED Plus display anyway.  I also don’t believe these Sam’s Club monitor shots.  My son is a Regional Manager for Verizon Corporate and even he doesn’t get this kind of information until about a week before a phone release.  I personally believe Verizon is to blame here, and not Motorola.  Verizon is known for playing these stupid marketing games, hoping people will get tired and purchase the Charge and the Thunderbolt, which did not sell nearly as many as Verizon was expecting.

Anyone have any idea why when I view this website from my work, I only see the comments, and don’t see any box to type text in, no Like or Reply buttons or even the avatar pics?  I’m running IE8 both at home and work but can’t make comments from work.  Could they have shut off some active x or java control for IE that prevents this?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I trying hard not to get mad at Motorola for what the tech bloggers are doing like repeating the same information over and over about the bionic the only things confirmed about the phone was it will be dual core processing and LTE 4G capable delayed for enhancements and promised sometime this summer just like the rest you guys I’m tired of waiting myself if Motorola doesn’t step up real soon I’ll be taking my cash to another phone company
