5 Reasons the Motorola Droid Bionic Will Beat the iPhone 5

Published

on

Once September rolls around, those of you that have upgrades or expired contracts are going to be looking to get a new phone, a decision that is not going to be easy because of two new phones that will likely be on the shelves at that time. The first, the iPhone 5, Apple’s latest and greatest mobile hardware. The second. Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic which I think is going to be the phone that proves to be the iPhone 5/4S’ biggest competitor, tiered data and all.

Droid Bionic

And while the details of both phones are still not official, we wanted to give you a little bit of a head start to help jump start your decision making. Here are five reasons why you might want to strongly consider picking up the Motorola Droid Bionic instead of Apple’s next-generation iPhone. And of course, you’ll want to take a look at the five reasons why you might want the iPhone 5 instead of the Droid Bionic as well. (And if you need even more information, check out these reasons why you should wait for the Droid Bionic.)

4G LTE

This right here is probably the strongest reason why you would want to consider the Motorola Droid Bionic. While it’s not official that the iPhone 5 won’t have LTE capabilities when it arrives this fall, there are some very strong indicators that say that this sadly won’t be the case. So, that gives the Motorola Droid Bionic a huge advantage over the iPhone 5.

4G LTE

Verizon’s LTE network is ridiculously fast. If you don’t believe it, check out this video. And with those speeds and the hardware that the Droid Bionic is packing, it’s an unrivaled combination.

Not all places in the United States currently have 4G LTE, this is true. But Verizon’s rapidly expanding its 4G LTE network and it’s only a matter of time before where you live is blanketed in the speedy goodness of Big Red’s next-gen network. Remember, you’re going to have this phone for two years, so I think it’s worth betting on a phone that has a 4G radio over a phone that will never have one.

We know that 4G LTE is the future and the Droid Bionic is going to be the phone that takes you there.

Unlocked Bootloader

There is a very good chance that this won’t come at launch but if it doesn’t, the Droid Bionic’s bootloader will definitely be unlocked by Motorola in the future. What does this mean? It means that the Motorola Droid Bionic will be to customize which is one of the most appealing things about Android.

Custom ROMs, leaked updates and an extremely active community are all of the things that you can expect from this. Sure, you can jailbreak your iPhone, but honestly, the waiting game after Apple patches the exploits with updates is frustrating.OMAP4

The Processor

The Motorola Droid Bionic will either have a Tegra 2 or an OMAP4 processor from Texas Instruments on board when it arrives. The OMAP4 is looking like the winner thus far and that’s a good thing as it’s the first processor to get Netflix HD certification. If it does have the OMAP4, that means that the Droid Bionic will at some point be able to stream 1080p video using Netflix.

I should also note that Motorola has obviously seen the poor battery life that has come with the HTC ThunderBolt and the other 4G LTE smartphones. I am positive that one of the reasons they went back to the drawing board was to improve battery life and I’m willing to bet that this thing will be able to handle both dual-core and 4G LTE.

Ice Cream Sandwich

Apple made a big splash when it introduced iOS 5 in June but the fact of the matter is, a lot of the new stuff  in Apple’s operating system is already available in Android. In addition, Google is going to be rolling out their new software this winter, software called Ice Cream Sandwich. The details are murky but we know a few things.

One, it’s going to feature a state of the art user interface and two, it’s going to bring an advanced app framework which means that Android applications are about to get a whole lot better. We also know that Google is advertising it as “one OS everywhere” so we have a feeling that all the fragmentation with Android might finally be coming to an end.

Google obviously has felt the heat from iOS 5 and that means that Ice Cream Sandwich is going to have to make a pretty big splash. Amazing software and fantastic hardware? Yeah, the Motorola Droid Bionic is going to be pretty darn sexy.

Do You Really Want A Screen That Is 4-Inches or Smaller?

I love my iPhone 3GS, I really do, but the 3.5-inch screen just isn’t cutting it anymore. The iPhone 4 employs the  same size and I have a pretty good feeling that Apple isn’t going to drastically bump up the screen size of the next iPhone. 4-inches at the most, probably 3.7 inches. They might even keep the 3.5-inch screen. If any of those happen, the Droid Bionic is going to have another trump card in my opinion.

Watch a video on a 3.5-inch screen and then watch one on a 4.3-inch screen. It just isn’t the same. The 4.3-inch display gives you a much better experience. And it’s not just videos. Web browsing is bigger, applications are bigger and after awhile you’ll wonder why you were using such a small screen for all of these years.

Now, it’s possible that the Motorola Droid Bionic will be 4.5-inches, which is pretty big, but I have a feeling that Motorola will keep it at 4.3-inches and quite frankly, I’ll take that over a 3.5-4-inch screen for the next two years.

Compared to the “other” article mentioned in your report. Yours is much more compelling and a whole lot more informative. Thank you. I’m sure there will be those that will only care about whether it has a half eaten apple on the back or not. Which by now has to be rotten.

Of course it’s more compelling, you had your mind made up before you read either article.  We are all glad you like your Android product, but competition is good for everyone.  When Apple gets something right( app store, touch screen) Android copies it, when Android gets something right ( Notifications, OTA updates) Apple copies it.

You don’t know that he had his mind made up. Nice try, fanboy– go home. You might live in fantasy world, but in real life, Apple’s rotting in Android’s shadow. The screws over at Apple have only two things in mind: profit and catering to their brainwashed cult following that’ll swallow any garbage they dish out. While Apple tells YOU what YOU want and controls your entire experience, Android makes a slew of expandable, custom options available to its users. Apple is always behind the curve, and its products are over-expensive.

Agree and disagree. I am an Android fan and I can honestly say that I like both OS’s fairly equally. I agree that Apple does charge for a lot of their services while Google’s is free which is why I prefer Android as well as the open-source customization. I’m not saying its better, its just my opinion. But to say that Apple is behind the curve is DEFINITELY wrong. Apple started the entire “touchscreen” smartphone experience with multitouch, apps, etc. only to be copied by Android and phone companies like HTC and Motorola. They also started the whole mobile tablet trend which was copied Android and companies. Places where Apple copied Android is more in the software portion which includes the cloud experience, notification pulldown (iOS 5). I do think that Android is ahead of Apple in terms of features and ideas, but they just haven’t implemented them in a way that goes with the UI. I have to admit that Apples whole UI thing looks pretty damn sweet and I wish that Android looked as good as it does. Also, battery life, you have to admit that Android phones have a pretty bad rep as far as battery life unless a HUGE battery is in the thing (Bionic). You’re looking like a fanboy yourself so don’t go pointing fingers.

There will obviously be those nodding their heads at one article or the other … but as ‘Guest’ said competition is good for all.  Each phone has pros and cons.  I love my iOS devices, and have a Mac and PC I use daily at home, and have an Android phone as my lifeline (Droid Pro).

My biggest concern is battery life – the Droid Pro uses the *same* battery as the original Droid, meaning half the batter life since it has a much more powerful system!

As for screen size there is an obvious trade-off.  My wife loves the size/weight of my old Palm Pixi and would *never* use one of those mondo 4+” screens but likes the feel of the iPhone.  If I could get the Galaxy Tab 7 as a phone I would use it :D

It doesn’t matter what you are a fan of or which phone/os you prefer. This article had evidence the other did not. It just spoke of what the iPhone5 has, which is great yes, but when comparing one thing to another it is common practice to actually compare. You show the one products strength, realize and make note of the others and balance the argument.

I personally think Apple and Google have really good offerings with their phones. I currently don’t have a smartphone but I am thinking about getting a Droid Bionic because I want to try something new. I already have an iPod Touch and I do love it. Apple has an impressive ecosystem for iOS. But I believe I will love the Droid Bionic and Android just as much.

you don’t need the bionic to know the iPhone 5 will be beat. iOS is so dated compared to Android, and the various hardware platforms Android comes on will always be ahead of iPhones.

The following reply comes from a formally avid andriod over apple person…ME

Well one thing is for sure…being a motorola phone, it will certainly lock up, restart for no reason and run extremly rough…not to mention everytime a new Android OS comes out it will cause the phone to be extremly buggy for a few months until an update is developed…I am going with Iphone 5 and the reason is simple, My moto droid (1) and then my moto DroidX were and still are extremly buggy, and always crap out at the worst times (when important calls come in, when wanting to show a pic to a friend, ect)…Andriod has the same problem windows has…one operating system + thousands of devices = buggy operation…Apple has one operating system + one device = very smooth  (does what it is supposed to)

Take an honest look at the iPhone arguments:

iOS 5:  Android has always been better then iOS.  More customization, open source, multi-tasking.  Apples latest OS will finally introduce some features that Android has already had for quite some time now.

Display size:  This is really user preference, and I don’t see how you can really say that one phone is better then the other, unless the main reason for your purchase is to watch movies, or a phone to fit your small hands.

Processor:  Both are supposed to have dual-core 1GHz processors.  The Bionics will be the first processor capable of streaming Netflix movies at 1080p.  How does Apple win this one?

Choose your own carrier:  Finally a solid argument for Apple.  Problem is that it only applies to a fraction of the market – Those who are on AT&T or Sprint and use over 2GB of data a month.

This really isn’t a competition as far as which phone is better.  iPhone will do well when it releases, but mostly due to name recognition then performance.

I personally don’t like iphones, maybe I didn’t give them a chance, because they were odd to use, and I hated At&t.. They are the same exact boring way they’ve been for years. I find nothing exciting about them. But yes, they are good phones, and people love them, they will keep selling, and there will always be disagreements between android and apple fans.
But with Android there are so many more options. You can choose any carrier, manufacturers. Maybe you hate Blur, but love sense or touchwiz, or a casio phone that can be smashed or be used underwater, an all touch screen phone, or one with a physical keyboard.. Thats whats great about Android, Choices, and many of them!  Your not limited by a company with the same product over, and over, and over again!  My Opinion Strictly.. I’m sure the Apple Bottom boys will differ

A few other points that have yet to be mentioned in favor of the Droid – SD Card Slot and Removable/replaceable battery. With iPhone/iPod Touch, I have to choose which size of storage I want up front. With Droid, if I start with 16GB and later find I need 32GB, I can simply buy a new SD card NOT an entirely new device!!

I have heard fanboys say “Once you go Mac you never go back.”  Well, I just spent 5 months using a mac, and programming for the iphone… all I can say is that I NEVER want to go back.  Btw, my roommate is a linux fanboy, he USED to side with Mac over PC because it was UNIX based… but after he spent 5 months with a mac even he said he would rather use a PC, he was begging our mobile development prof to let us program for Android XD

HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE NO ONE HAS MENTIONED: The iPhone is a bitch phone. It’s a great device, but it’s a chick phone…..period. Droid’s a man’s phone, bigger and better in every way. Droid is a meat and potatoes phone whereas the iPhone is a tea and crumpets phone. The iPhone is for all the douchbags that frequent coffee shops like Starbucks or Carrabou as they hang out on the patio drinking their latte’s and looking gay as they text sweet nothings to their other gay friends which are probably sitting right across from them in the other chair. Meanwhile, the Droid users are partying it up slammin’ beers and eating wings as they look up sports stats via GOOGLE while they watch football on the big screen. Eat that RUAM and the iFags………….Nuff said!!!!!!!!

HA!! best comment so far.. but so true.. If you like Google products and use gmail.. you will love Android.  Had Iphone 4 for a few weeks before losing it.. I was ok, but Android OS is so much more intuitive.. been waiting a year for this phone. IMHO, Motorola does the android system the best.

Not gonna lie, I completely agree with you good sir.  When I think of people with iPhones I think of stuck up preppy guys and ladies who wave their iPhone around because, as said before, it’s got a shiny or matte apple on the back.  More and more it appears that the people who know what they’re buying are purchasing Android.  Fortunately I am not a preppy git.

In response to the topic, up until a few weeks ago all I ever used was PCs.  Then I got a macbook pro, which I do believe is worth it thanks to Lion.  All the trackpad commands make it a great long term investment over a couple hundred dollars for a cheap PC laptop.

However, Android vs. iPhone is a very different battle.  Android offers the freedom and customization of a PC.  iPhone is very safeguarded to make life “easier” for users.  I say “easier” because it’s made that way for the retarded preps who buy them.  Although the iPhone offers Retina, the App Store, and a far better touch screen than any other device, 4G LTE is the selling point.  After seeing that the download speed on the 4G LTE Thunderbolt is faster than my macbook running wifi at my house, I am very impressed.  Probably the only network that could beat that kind of speed would be fiberoptic and that’s way more expensive than a 200-300 dollar phone only paying 30 a month.  I’ve become used to speedy internet connection on my new macbook.  I want to keep it that way with a great smartphone.

I think the Bionic is gonna be the one for me.

I own an Mac and will never even CONSIDER switching back to a PC and Windows Vista…7…7.5…8…9…1,000,278…whatever.  But I will also NEVER switch to an iOS device over Android.  Steve Jobs doesn’t tell me how to use my MAC, and he shouldn’t try to control what I do with my mobile device, either.  PERIOD.  And the hilarious thing (to me, anyway) is that the only people I’ve known personally to have a virus on their mobile device are iPhone owners.  But Flash is so DANGEROUS and SCARY!!!  GIve me a damned break.

I’m fans of both, and I’d honestly say that I would go for the iPhone 4S that just came out.  The only reason for my choice is the horrid battery life found on a Droid Bionic.  The iPhone will never have such battery life.  (From the owner of 7 Android Devices, and 3 iPhones)
